Anyway, he came out with his guitar and sang it flawlessly. There was such a hush over that audience like a forest under a blanket of snow. He had full command of the crowd. This was the disco/punk rock era when Vincent was released. EVERY eye was locked on him. Ive never seen any performance like that before or since. This us such a beautiful song. @@donmclean8257 When I saw the the reply in my in box, i thought it was someone replying to what I had said about you. It cannot possibly be this famous singer and song writer who is writing to me. Huh? What? I guess we have been brought up to idolize entertainment figures like Johnny Mathis and Tab Hunter. Instead of thinking they are human beings whom the universe decided to give them special gifts. We are going through tough times and i worry about the future. I keep going back to the 60s when I listen to music. There are so many writers and composers of that era whose music made me stop and listen with my head and my heart. Music that was not only beautiful but spoke to the realities of the time. "To everything, turn, turn," Sam Cooke's "I know there is a change coming." You are so fortunate. You are right there with them at the top. Never stop. I would like to tell you more but I am afraid I would bore you to tears. Thank you for writing. You made it better today.

@@donmclean8257 Don McLean. Sometimes I go through the comments to your songs. I see how your songs have touched people in so many ways. Some reveal pain, healing, love and discovery of the beautiful world of a touching song. You are so privileged. I would dearly like to converse with you through these electronic means. You ask me to share my thoughts and as a fan to advice you. Advice you? What advice could I possibly give to a man whose songs have become icons? Who has traveled the world bringing joy to so many people and who is so loved and admired? Even if i tried, it would be presumptions and besides, you have probably heard it all before. When i was young in the 60s we ate dinner while hearing the body count of soldiers dead. We heard of fierce dogs being hurled at people who only wanted one thing, to be recognized as humans. Climate change and the absurd inequalities were not yet reflected in that tapestry. I worry about a future that could leave our planet unrecognizable. And just like Vincent, I often loose hope like lovers often do. You and I are the same age so what we have seen is much alike and we both have learned from the lives we have lived. Advice you? I could not even try. If i had your guitar, your voice and your inspiration, I would write a song dedicated to the third planet in the Solar System. No sermons, no speeches just a song. Maybe one more will listen now. You have heard this before. Sing. Sing! Sing!! until your chords refuse to obey you. Sing until you are one with the earth that created you. We need that now. Thank you Don McLean.

As many unspoken facts are not revealed until we don't have them, Don McLean will unfortunately be one of these facts. By all standards he is a true genius In not only story telling songs but capturing real life, love and death. And singing these verses with a God given voice. One in billion artists!

Awww he said smooching.... And I love that his wrist un-SNAPPED not unbuttoned. I love his lyrics, I always have. He was my first record purchase, too. *hugs Don* My 14-year-old daughter and I play your music so often. Thank you for sharing yourself and your time with us back then. Come to Seattle, we'll have you over for dinner. :) :) :) We play a mean game of Rummy.

This is much better than the original studio single version with overblown orchestration, especially strings. Thanks you.

TheRunner75 I completely agree. This stripped down version of just him and his guitar reveals the soul.

I am still here, listening. When you find a good musician you hang on like glue. Was it only 40 years ago I found you, nay, must be a bit more, like almost 50.

Don McLean is a musician and a poet. Every single song he wrote is a gem in notes and in words. I also love the shots of the audience. He has them completely spellbound.

How wonderful to know that Don Mclean could write the sweetest words to this romantic ballad, probably the sweetest love song of all time, to a sweet melody There were others who did also sing this in their own way, but this tribute is to the originator, Don Mclean who was inspired to write and express the way that we feel, when we experience a true love glad to find this on your channel today and i wish to compliment you too.

A beautiful song. Don is such a talented singer, songwriter and guitarist. Perry Como did a good enough job with his easy listening cover, but Don's original is something else.

I don't know Don McLean but he comes across as the every man, he grew up in New York not to far from me, making me think I understand him, perhaps a bit better than most. His songs are perfect slices of life not only for the everyman but for everyone.

@@donmclean8257 my, is that really you Sir? Thank you for your comment! Your song Vincent is still my favorite song. The melancholy, the poetry, the sheer emotion the song brings... To me it's something I could never express in words. You have brought into this world something so beautiful and pure and I can't thank you enough. It's a privilege that I live so that I can listen to your songs. God bless you, Sir!
