You are one of the few mixers on youtube whos actually insanely good & unique. You think about music the way it should be thought about. Your approach to mixing just makes sense.

Amazing video! Especially the 4-8db on the compressor...in the past, when I mistakenly had it compressing like that, I would quickly reduce the gain reduction and then wonder why it didn't sound as good...my biggest take away is learning to listen instead of adjusting by meter levels...thank you

Yup. I always say, meters can be just as misleading as they can be helpful. Turn the analysers off!

These are the best style tutorials. More about the mindset into the decision making. This is how we really learn. Good stuff sir. Gonna have to try that Arctic now. I'm afraid to use Acustica's stuff on a whole mix because it will freak out my Mac.
@WeissAdvice
@WeissAdvice Жыл бұрын
Yea, I recommend being sparing with Acustica products. They're not workflow friendly. I like Arctic quite a bit, and it doesn't seem to beat up my CPU as much as some of the others.
@NoQualmsTheArtist
@NoQualmsTheArtist Жыл бұрын
Acustica channel strips chew up your CPU because they are 4 intensive plugins in one. But their individual plugins, EQs, compressors etc are no more intensive than any other oversampled plugin. So don't be afraid to use them. Most of them are amazing. Nickel and Smoke sound like crap for some reason, but the rest are fantastic.

@@WeissAdvice I just tested Arctic on a mix last night. Definitely adding something nice. I noticed you had the dial set all the way fast though? I slowed it down a bit... I though it did something nicer with the low-end.

Sounds good. I often go back and forth between trying to get the mix mostly done before adding mix bus effects and mixing into them. Right now, I mix into them mostly, but also try and check how the mix is developing when I turn off the main bus stuff to make sure the mix/levels still make sense w/the effects off even if they sound better with the bus effects. I'm not sure what I'm doing with that info exactly, but I feel like when I strictly mix into bus compression and eq then I end up not spending enough time and effort on the individual tracks and getting those levels right, or maybe bringing some levels too high bc its not registering as too hot bc of the limiter. If I have already picked the bus effects when I'm working on the mix, or even when making a beat, I almost always end up changing some of the settings of the bus processing anyway at the end of the mix; just to make sure that it's working for, and not against, the mix's over-all goal. Thanks for the strategies!!

hi Weiss, i have two questions here, why cant you yourself do mastering when everything in the mix looking good, is there any magic going to happen in last plugin which is limiter? do you want some hardware processing on your mix through mastering engineer which you dont own, or you want other ears to get a feedback on the mix from a professional guy? second question is what if that mastering guy has not that particular plugins which you are keeping on the mix bus. please give your point of view. 😊😊
@WeissAdvice
@WeissAdvice Жыл бұрын
A really good mastering engineer is like a QC specialist. They hear my mix fresh and in a different space. I master a lot of my own mixes, but by necessity, not by design. I couldn't care less what gear a mastering engineer uses. I print the mix, so it doesn't matter if the mastering engineer has the same plugins. They don't get the session, they get the print.

Internet advice: 1-2db of GR on the comp. Real life advice: that shit sound good or nah?
@alphaomega6062
@alphaomega6062 Жыл бұрын
@@WeissAdvice I guess that that ole internet advice is based on the premise of not making the compressor work to hard and so not generating unwanted artifacts but it makes sense that if it sounds good it is NOT making unwanted artifacts so who cares what the needle shows?

@@alphaomega6062 It's like how every EQ tutorial tells you not to boost too much, and then you see a big name pro boosting all of the gain available on an SSL desk :D It seems like rules are really kinda just training wheels.

This was really helpful. I tend to limit (excuse the pun) my mix buss processing to 1-2dB of compression, just for some glue. But this video inspires me to try using my ears more to not be afraid to improve my mix further.
@WeissAdvice
@WeissAdvice Жыл бұрын
My experience is that 1-2db of compression is often right for some mixes, but then totally irrelevant in other situations. Sometimes I hear the compression I want and the meter isn't even moving. Sometimes I feel like I don't get the compression I want until I'm hitting 6db. Best best: turn off the meter.

Always doing great videos. Man, I really need help with my Ilok. The Cloud Session keeps closing on its own and I just can't work. 'cause Pro Tools and all my plugins won't lunch. I have even uninstalled and re-installed Ilok like more than 100 times and made sure I updated it, but no success. I'm sorry to write this here, but it really seems to be my only option now. All the manufacturers couldn't help. Thanks in advance for the help I can get here!!!

Sounds great. I like the comparisons you are making to hip-hop records. When I heard the first revision on Josh's channel I had the feeling that while it was a rock record your hip-hop influence was there as well.

To an extent there's always going to be a bit of Hip Hop influence in everything I do. I formed my tastes in 90s and early 2000s Hip Hop. Just part of how I hear things.

@@WeissAdvice I've never seen someone route audio out of PT to screenflow. Like with my setup, I have an apollo and I just tell Screenflow to capture its output (in the screenflow preferences), no DAW routing required, so I was just curious how that's set up under the hood on your system and if it's any easier/more reliable. Thanks!
