Landscape drawing and painting with mixed media in the studio. Using charcoal and casein paints I thought I would draw and paint a landscape for a fun experiment. I hadn't combined these 2 art mediums before so was very interested to see how they worked together.
I used a variety of charcoal sticks including Nitram, willow vine and compressed sticks for the drawing. I then applied white Casein paint to lighten the drawing and re-work again with charcoal.
After lots of mark making, erasing, scratching out and painting back in - I was quite happy with the results.
Please ask any questions in the comments area and I will be happy to answer.
Thank you for watching this video 'Mixed Media Landscape Drawing / Painting with Charcoal and Casein' - Andrew

I loved watching your process. I tend to tighten up so much when painting but using charcoals and graphite like this is a great loosening up technique for me. The casein paint was interesting. Do you make it yourself and would you consider doing a short video of the process in the future? Did you mix white pigment with it? Your paint looked a bit transparent so I’m wondering if you can mix to your own preference?

Thank you for your comments. I use Richeson casein ready made in tubes. I think the process of making it, is time consuming and I’m not sure how long the paint would last? Maybe if I used casein for all of my paintings it would definitely be something to look into 😃

What is casein??? Thank you only in my third year of my art journey and theres so many new things to understand....
@AndrewBarrowmanArt
@AndrewBarrowmanArt 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching. It’s a paint made with milk protein as the binder. With oil paints it’s usually linseed oil but casein uses milk. It dries fast and is permanent when dry

Hello Andrew, I love all your demos, and this one combining charcoal and casein in such an expressive way is awesome! I have two questions about your materials: I think your Fabriano paper is hot press? I have that and it always seems too smooth for charcoal and particularly for lots of layering, but that does not appear to be an issue for you. I guess you find it has the right amount of tooth? My second question is about that jumbo charcoal stick you’re using. Is that Nitram? Thanks so much, ~Dawn
@AndrewBarrowmanArt
@AndrewBarrowmanArt 5 ай бұрын
Thanks Dawn. The giant charcoal is Nitram. I don’t like too much texture in the paper so this Fabriano Academia works well for me 😃

Hello! I loved your drawing and I learned some new techniques I can try! I got so inspired by a black and white drawing by Chris van allsberg at the beginning but i had no idea how he could put so dark color and white at once in a drawing. I tried some pencils but still i loved the extreme(?)darkness charocol can give but wondered how can we control the charcoal when we need to draw such a details. Then when I saw your drawing experiment, i came to know that we could add water to charcol and use white directly on it. I love it how the rough marks from Charcoal pencil disappears and become like a background when you added water...have you tried drawing something with very much details like grass on the ground or leaves?
@AndrewBarrowmanArt
@AndrewBarrowmanArt 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you very much for your comments. Another technique is to use masking fluid (like watercolour artists use to keep the white). You carefully peel it off at the end. I haven’t drawn grass for a long time but if I did I would just suggest a few blades in amongst many tones
