You are so industrious Andrew, such a lot of great work, thanks for the tour, shocked by the damage to your returned painting I would be furious if it were mine.

That's a total shame, how gallery damaged the paintings!😮 Absolutely disrespectful to the work of art and I sincerely hope, it doesn't happen often. Shame on them 😡 Oh, it made me so angry.... Your studio looks like Alladin's cave, so many interesting things in one place, and even equipped with stalactites of dried paint ( or stalagmites, depends how you hold that pallet) ! 😂 Thank you for the tour, most interesting! 👍

i enjoy painting on plywood. Wonderful work! Curious; what causes a painting to remain unfinished? Do you simply lose interest in the subject or is it just life intervening?
@AndrewBarrowmanArtКүн бұрын
that's a great question. I think I lose interest or it doesn't seem to work as I'd hoped. I don't mind as I have lots on the go at the same time. If I only worked on 1 at a time it would be devastating

@@AndrewBarrowmanArt Sorry….i didn’t mean your outside plein air work although I always watch those [ they help me so much!] I was asking about how you finish your plein air paintings in the studio 😊 if that makes sense!

Great to see some of the paintings in the studio that we've watched you paint en plein air and I love seeing artists sketchbooks. Can you just explain about the brush cleaner, I couldn't quite catch what you said about it - I'm looking for ways to avoid using solvents and your brushes always look so clean!

PS - Yes, of course I enjoyed it. And don't worry about making a mess, for Gawd's sake - we all do, and if we didn't we'd be playing at it.
@RobertJonesWightpaintКүн бұрын
Do you worry much about verisimilitude (God, that's a long word....)? I did, but really don't anymore .... good to see you have dozens of finished canvases lurking about, even though I know you sell (you swine....). Anyway, back to the point - is it important to you to produce a painting that bears an accurate resemblance to the scene in front of you? I know this is a vague question, and I imagine we all take a starting point and play with it and thus depart from it; but do you seek to come back to it and seek greater geographical, topographical accuracy? More and more, that bores me and I don't care, but maybe I should. By the way, if any of mine came back from a gallery damaged, I WOULD have to kill them.. One isn't unreasonable, but bugger that for a game of soldiers....

thank you for the studio tour! that makes me really upset that the gallery did not package/protect your painting correctly before shipping it back to you so it got damaged... this is one reason why galleries disgust me! one of many... youve got so many beautiful paintings there and some great starts to new ones... your skies with clouds are lovely!
@AndrewBarrowmanArtКүн бұрын
Thank you so much. Storing the work is often the problem as the galleries don't have much space. Also, it is often pot luck whether the work comes back in one piece with couriers delivering the work. It is usually easier with my local galleries as I can deliver and collect myself

I've come back to this for another look (and best wishes to Basil, hope he's better than he was 5 months ago). I conclude I couldn't do this - it's the chasing of the clouds I couldn't do, leaving aside all the physical stuff about getting out there in the open air in the first place: you can see why people use photographs - their clouds don't move! Trouble is, they then look as though they wouldn't move in their paintings, and it is indeed very difficult to make a sky look alive if you've not painted it from life. But there we are, one tries. Anyway, came back because watching you paint, and listening to your thoughtful mutterings, inspires and encourages me to get the paints out again: even though I have a lot of paintings lying about ...

Taking the Pith with your pastel sketching skills! 😉 Really lovely sketch Andrew, how do the Arrtx pastels compare to the Paul Rubens Haiya ones you tried? Also, thanks for not covering up those beautiful bird sounds with music… I think it enhances the immersive quality of watching your videos when I can hear what you’re hearing at that time. So nice to be out in nature.

My first 100 paintings were in oil pastels. I treated them like paint. First layer covered the canvas with a 1 color under painting, smoothing it out with fingers. Then would go thicker and smoothing, blending with fingers. Bright colors etc. I would seal paintings with a finish. Now upgraded to oil sticks only. Details with scratches like you thought me.
@AndrewBarrowmanArtКүн бұрын
I prefer oil sticks but these are fun to try - thank you for your comments

Lovely to see another video with you using the oil pastels and a great sketch ❤ I must admit that despite loving trying out this medium I have been quite frustrated trying to master the layering of colours so they don’t end up messy and muddy looking! I’ve also been using rough paper and seeing the result of your sketch on smooth paper I will persevere and try again. Thanks for the inspiring video 😃

Oil pastels are so nice… but actually quite difficult to use, especially for fine detail….so the pencil technique is good. Also, cheaper oil pastels don't layer very well. Personally I think they work best on ungrained paper, like Andrew's sketchbook, otherwise you find yourself fighting the grain and trying to get the colour to sit in the grain. It's sticky stuff so adhesion isn't an issue. You can also use a brush and solvent, to move the colour around, and rubber scrapers.. but drawing fine detail is v difficult and annoyung. But you can get spray to seal it to stop it smudging…because it never really dries. But of course Andrew is a pastel master so his picture is 10 outta 10 as always

Basil's back! The real star.... I've not really got on with oil pastels, but I think I see why: a) my set is very old, and has got hard, with a coating of white oxidization so I can't see what the colour is without scraping the white off, b) they weren't as soft as these look to be in the first place, c) I was probably using the wrong paper, and d) my range of colours was too limited. So I think it's time to ditch the remnants of the old Guitar brand (Japanese) and invest in a decent set: you've got a very decent colour note for an oil painting here, and a sketch I'd be happy to bung in a frame and hang on the wall.
@AndrewBarrowmanArtКүн бұрын
Thank you so much Robert. The oil pastel sets these days are a lot softer than the ones I was used to using as a kid which were usually wax crayons
@JimReid-cb8lx8 күн бұрын
Look great to sketch and scruff with. Pity they are not compatible with oil paint as they have wax and never dry completely. A bit confusing as cold wax can be mixed with oil paint and buffed to be sorta polished, but again that never dries either. Basil looks a bit exhausted and chilling out. Lucky dog.
@AndrewBarrowmanArtКүн бұрын
They are fun to use but only for sketches (I think) - oil sticks would be best if you want to mix with oil paints. All the best Jim
