Half korean/norwegian here. I never really got to grow up with korean culture either, as my mom was adopted to norway only 3 months old. She never cared or felt a urge to know about korea, rather increasing my interest even more. This has made for some akward feelings of not being allowed to relate or feel discriminated against although my teen years really said that wasnt true. Nothing of the schoolwork i did , although high grades, ever felt like my own achievment because i was asian, and other stereotypical things. And yet when i got emotional during school thematics regarding racism i was met with confusion from both classmates and teachers. Mind you ive grown up in a small kinda isolated town. When me and my sister brought up racism to our mom she couldn't relate as she has always felt norwegian, partially to the fact she grew up before the whole world was accessible through the internet. This was painstakingly real at the start of the pandemic when any profile with my face on it got severly attacked by deathtreats and cyberbullying, all this being stuck at home getting notified by every single one. I have luckily had a connection with taekwondo since i was age 8 by pure luck of it starting up in such a small place as home. It was also traditional ITF style intigrating history, wording and values that really filled a missing part of me. It got my through depression at my worst 3 years of my life during highschool and helped me set goals to keep going. Sadly me being the only blacl belt instructor left last years led me to closing the clubs 7(9) year run, also leading me to drive 2 hours to the closest club every other week to keep going. I have yet to visit korea, but that too is a goal i have set. It may be a good expirience finding a culture i at least always have felt a relation to or closure if met with disapointment. I have a plan on further education into renewable energy escpesially hydrogen, which korea is currently very technologically ahead on. This would make an exchange student travel possible in the future. Blabbering a little too much now so l'll keep it at that. Your channel has also helped me cope over the last couple of years so i really want to leave a thankyou to you guys as well😄🇧🇻🇰🇷

A lot of third culture kids will feel the same sentiment even if they aren't mixed race. Ultimately, it's a conflict between nature and nurture. You can attempt to reconcile it by actively learning and adapting certain aspects of the unfamiliar culture, but it can't be forced because your environment shapes and influences your upbringing.

Even when it’s about such an important subject your videos always got that cozy vibe that is so welcoming, I feel like theres tiny lines between exploring a culture that isn’t yours and respecting it, owning your own culture and learning what is a part of your culture that you never owned. Because of the ambiguousness of nowadays culture fetichism in our daily world, people are taking steps back to explore their backgrounds or just to explore a culture scared they are taking something that aren’t theirs. I am happy it isnt a taboo in this chanel.

I think it'd be really great if there's Korean subtitles.

As usual, I enjoyed this podcast. I was, however, surprised that it concluded so quickly, just as I was settling in anticipating more. I have thought about today's subject quite a bit, & although I am reluctant to say this, I will. In general, people's feelings can be fickle. For example, more than a few who are resistant to a halfie's attempts to belong culturally, will suddenly claim those who are well known & respected or become famous. There isn't anything we can do about this but be aware of human nature. And yet, despite how other people think, it is important to continue taking in all parts of your cultural identity because they really do belong to you.

Great points to bring up. Also, the video format of the podcast is much shorter and trimmed :) you can hear the episode in entirety at the podcasts. This segment was from our listener mail :)

Be yourself without having to identify with anything at all. Race is a construct and we need to get past this without have to hinge our identities on it. Surround yourself with intelligent people and you won't have to worry about rejection.
