in the Zulu culture, the celebrations can go up to 10 days but over different periods of time, so lets say over a span of 8 months, because there are a lot of rituals that need to be performed, first from the sending a letter to convey interest in the lady(the letter is sent to her family by his elders/uncles), then the lobola negotiations take place, then umembeso (gift giving from grooms family to brides family), ukucimela (bride going to inlaws, so her family celebrates her), umbondo (bride arrives with groceries to grooms fam, to be a trial daughter inlaw and to learn grooms family traditional customs) and then finally after a few weeks/months, umabo (bride gifting the grooms family). All of these customs are done with celebrations at every point.

Wedding celebrations took as long as one could also because couples did not go out of their villages to go on honey moon, at most if the couple was from different close villages..the party could be takes to the other village for celebrations..and as there were no written invitations..it gave time for those that were not notified in time or that were sick on the first day of the marriage to still be able to participate in the celebrations at a later date.

@@TheDemouchetsREACT That's my tribe the Pedi's, we speak Sepedi and there is no 10 days partying at all. The wedding starts on friday evening untill Sunday evening. Friday evening is just the singing and dancing untill early hours in the morning. The wedding will take place at the bride's house on Saturday. Then on Saturday evening after all the dancing the groom is prepared to go to her inlaws for good. There are certain rituals that are performed when the bride is taken to her inlaws. We prepare a sour pap, deep fried kitchen and we put lollipops all over it and that goes with the groom to her inlaws. The bride will be covered with a blanket from head to toe when she is taken to her inlaws because the inlaws must not see her that night untill the folliwing morning of the second leg of the wedding. Some family members will accompany the groom with singing and dancing and will also sleep with the bride in the same room that night. The following morning at the groom's place, the pap and the chicken will be eaten by the groom, bride and both their families to cement their relationship as inlaws. The same dancing that was done at the bride's place will continue at the groom's place the whole day on that sunday and then it's done. I am hearing 10 days for the first time. The lobola((dowry) part takes place before the wedding. The groom will inform his family of his intentions to marry and send his uncles to the lady's house to make known his intentions to marry their daughter. They will then give them the day in which they should come to pay the lobola and the price. They will also require items such as the coat for the uncle, the blanket for the grandmother, the hat for the uncle etc. Basically they must give gifts to the bride to be 's family culturally. Our culture is very beautiful.

Don't forget that in Sepedi, the celebration start with "go kokota". In Setswana it start with "Patlo". From there is the whole week of preparations, like brewing of traditional beer, and on a day before mostly is slaughtering and venue prepation. During all this days, people come, dance sing and eat. After the negotiations the groom is then sent to her new family, and there are rituals to be performed. The next week, the uncle continues with the celebration where he prepare for eating of the cow's head "oja tlhogo". This days, before the wedding, there is bridal shower and bachelor's party. After the wedding, the is eating of cake. 10 days is actually nothing.

It's not a Ten day Celebration. the wedding celebration is actually 2 days.. but there are lots of preparation leading up to it. Let me break it's down. depending on what culture you are , but we follow similar processes. step 1: the Groom sends a letter to the brides family to request a hand in marriage and a date for Lobola negotiations is set. 2. Lobola negotiations take place. brief explanation Lobola is not just about Dowry. The maximum number of cows actually is 11 cows. and each cow has a significance. 1 is for the brides father , 1 for the brides mother, 2 for the ancestors ( wife's family and husbands family signifying the union), 2 if the lady is a virgin without kids (signifies purity and how well kept she has been), the other 2 are for the King depending on the area they are from , the rest are a gift to the family which is thanking them for the woman they raised for u. 11 cows is the highest form of honary for a woman to get. this signifies how well she kept she was for her husband. Education generally doesn't play part in the negotiations because it's the parents responsibility to make sure their child goes to school. The theory about Lobola interms of African proverbs. Says a man can not appreciate, protect and provide for something / or someone he has not worked hard to get and a woman can not respect a man who can't demonstrate his ability to provide and protect by taking her hand in marriage. hence it's a steep price to pay. secondly Lobola is a secrate practice done to unify 2 families. Blood is spilt to join the two families interns of ancestors. There is a ceremony done to signify the union by slaughtering 2 cows and using the animals gull to dress both the bride and groom. this is an unbreakable bond. once that is done u are officially married actually. this ceremony takes place on a separate day. usually only attended by the family members, we don't want any bad spirits from outside. Zulu brides are the most expensive, because there are so many customs that need to be carried out in their culture prior. once all these customs are done, then there is the actual celebration and party. Day1 . wedding at the brides family house. This signifies the wife leaving her family stay and going to join the husbands family as their daughter. a cow is slaughtered. the ancestors are told that their child is going out their household and is going to grow a different family. they must be with her and make sure she births many children for that family. so it's more of a send off celebration. Day 2: wedding at the husbands house. the husbands family slaughters a cow to receive the bride into their ancestral home. the slaughtering introduces her to the husbands ancestors as a new child of the family. here she is bestowed a new name which she will go by in the new family. We celebrate we drink we eat at weddings. in South Africa Small weddings are not a thing. they are big. the whole process can take about ten days. but we generally don't do consecutively. customs and negotiations can happen in separate months in preparation for the 2 wedding days that take place

I think was a beautiful video. You see Interracial couples all the time in modern Australia. One couple I once met came to my area for a working holiday, they were picking Blueberries at a local farm. They came from New Zealand where they were living the wife was an African American originally from Colorado. Her husband was a blue-eyed blonde Norwegian. They were lovely people and I thought they looked great together. I don't think Interracial marriage was ever illegal over here. But they definitely had to deal with a lot of racists a least until the mid 80's when things definitely started changing for the better. That's when Modern Aussie Culture started and it's the racists who find themselves in big trouble. Including the legal variety. It could be extra heartbreaking if an Interracial marriage involving involving an Indigenous person ended in divorce. Unfortunately that happened in my family. My Mum's Cousin married a lovely Aboriginal Lady in around the 50's, later on he caved into some bad career advice and divorced her. There wasn't a Custody Suit, the government came and forcibly took her children/my second cousins off her. My normally forgiving Mum could never forgive him for what happened. I got to know the youngest of those second cousins of mine. He told me that by the time he was able to come back to his Mum she was prematurely grey and dying. I was in an Interracial relationship in High School I'm mainly of European Decent with some Asian. My Boyfriend back then was Aboriginal. It was the 90's.

Wedding is a process. After lobola negotiations we do traditional wedding. When paying lobola either with cash or cows we have a ceremony. That's traditional wedding and as for the adults even if you don't wear a white wedding gown it's not a problem. White wedding is just a celebration and can be done in the rented venues. During apartheid it was a taboo as well. We even had a law called the Immorality Act people dating across racial lines would be charged for breaking the law. People do internarry but those who have done so say they still experience looks of disapproval from especially the Caucasians. The families would be ok but extended relatives would have a problem especially if a white girl marries an African man, but if they are strong enough not to be fazed by all that they are ok.

How old is this video? Mixed race relationships & marriages are not that out of the norm anymore... Not in KZN & Cape Town anyway. Both my daughter & my niece are in cross race relationships. Certain things the journalist said are untrue, maybe she was brief wrongly or i didn't understand her correctly but ilobola is not to tie family bonds but to compensate the brides family from losing a valuable "item" to the groom's family. I am sorry for labeling the bride as an item, i lacked of a better word. As a Zulu myself we pay 11 cows for a Virgin and 6 cows to someone without a kid but no longer a virgin 4+1 cows for someone who has a kid and so forth... but to hear someone being asked to pay 15 cows, that's too much. Lastly in the Zulu culture each cow you are going to pay as a form of ilobola should be explained to you as to why you need to pay for it, to avoid being taken advantage of.

Actually, u are the one who got it all wrong.initially, Lobola was about the exchange of gifts between families, in the Zulu tradition at least.these gifts included things like reed mats and livestock.when Sir Theophilus Shepstone was appointed in charge of Native Affairs, he formalized and standardized the practice into a specific number of cattle.lobola was actually for the man to prove his ability to provide for his family as characterized by the popular adage " ubuhle bendoda izinkomo zayo".this thing about compensating the bride's family is modern-day trash.
