I've made envelopes like this for odd sized cards for years, just cutting a square of paper out but knowing about the diagonal measurements is much easier. I've got an envelope maker, but find this way much simpler. I've shown other card makers and they thought it was a brilliant idea too. 😁

DETERMING THE PHOTO DIMENSIONS USING 8.5” X 11.5” PAPER FOR THE ENVELOPE Req’d from KZbin videos Demo added 1” to the photo diagonal to determine the side of a square of paper used for the envelope Using a 5” x 7” photo SQRT[(5^2) + (7^2)] = 8.6” or 8.6 + 1 = 9.6” Solving the problem in reverse i.e. to find the photo’s dimensions given the 8.5” side of the construction paper: I would subtract 1” or 8.5” - 1” = 7.5”. That would be the desired diagonal of the photo To determine the photo’s sides using the 5:7 ratio: We have a/5 = b/7) and therefore b = 7/5a solving for a 7.5” diagonal: substituting for "b": 7.5” = SQRT(a^2 + b^2) = SQRT[(a^2 + (7/5)^2a^2)] solving for side "a": 7.5” = SQRT[(a^2(1+1.96)] = 1.72a a = 4.36” b = 6.1” The maximum dimensions for a photo in order to use 8.5” x 11.5” paper to construct its envelope allowing for 1” added to the diagonal.

Great tutorial! Needed to make an envelope and this simple method was the best I found, given what I had in the house. No double-sided tape was available, so I just used regular tape in the *inside* of the flaps but short enough to not be seen when the envelope was opened, if the flap was lifted to open it. I used a regular glue stick that a child uses to seal the entire thing. Looks pretty instead of a plain white envelope. Thanks for this!

Well I'm sure there are quite a few crafters singing your praises today Sam. It's good to know how to make envelopes the way we made them before we were lucky enough to get our envelope punch boards. Just goes to show, we can survive without all the new devices. (though we all would love everything, it's not always possible) Having alternatives to do the original way😂 which you always cater for, is a great bonus. Thank you very much for this tutorial video on how to make any size envelopes. You are a Star genuinly and a clever lovely lady on showing how to do this bye hand with just scissors and any coloured paper. Thank you again you are brilliant i have been looking at tutorials for a while now and most are very complicated on printers and sizing up and buying machines etc. But yours is straight forward and i hope i get my first envelope right following your tutorial lol. Us men are not as good as you lady's. Hello. Thank you so much for your lovely comments 😊 . The glue I use is called Collall it dries hard and can give strength to your projects . Cosmic shimmer is a quick grab glue and sticks quickly. Double sided tape is readily available to buy at Craftstash, Amazon, DIY shops Hobbycraft and ebay. They can be bought in various width sizes as well. Hope this helps you 😊

Hello Sam, I came across your channel just before Christmas 2021. The video I watched was “making Christmas Crackers”. It was brilliant ! So clear to understand. Your voice is so encouraging. Hi Sam fab video. Been using this method for almost 2 years now dont always cut away triangles it doesnt really matter can use ANY size/shape of card just add one inch from corner to corner to card size . I also use brown wrapping paper and ordinary wrapping paper. So much lovely wrapping around christmas time for making christmas envelopes!! Xxx

Sam does this work on shadow box cards? I have the envelobox score board but the sizes only go up to 8 inch and my card is 8 and a quarter, I added half inch to the card size and the envelope ended up being the perfect height but way to wide. I was doing your dl size shadow box and didn't want to make a box. I have since made a box lol 😆
