In this tutorial, I show you how to make these beautiful large Christmas Lanterns. They will hold a battery operated candle perfectly and will look lovely by your door or beside the Christmas tree.

I watched this video months ago and loved it, but I no longer decorate for Christmas - but I still wanted to make this lantern. The opportunity just presented itself. My grandson, my sweet little fella and the last grandchild before the greatgrandchildren started, is finishing up his Marine Boot Camp with the grueling Crucible and before becoming a full fledged Marine (wiping away tears). He will then be coming home for 10 days before continuing his military journey. I have watched this video 4 or 5 times, made my notations (supplies, times, measurements, etc) so that I can create 3 lanterns (hopefully more) for his mother's house, his father's house, my house and possibly (hopefully) his sister's house and his other grandparent's house. The idea is that we "burn the candle" every day of Crucible as well as any other time we want to send him thoughts of love and encouragement As he visits his family, he will see just how united his family is in support of his decision and efforts. I can't thank you enough for your idea and this video.

so cute! i really liked this! i did make two changes... instead of having an opening on one side to put the lights in, i left the bottom loose from the top, so you can open it up that way to put the lights in from the bottom and then it can be on a table and all sides look finished, closed and the same. i also made the black 'lid' bottom part 1/16 of an inch bigger to make sure that it sat in the bottom without bowing. on one lantern, i put some silhouette pcs on the inside of deer to show through since i did not have the snowflake vellum. these are sooooo cute!

These are just amazing. My husband loves antique lanterns. His father worked for the railroad when he was a child. I might use some distress ink on the kraft card to give them the antique look. Thanks so much.

Hi Sam. Your Christmas Lantern is amazing! So beautiful. I love the size. Nice and big, perfect for home decor. Your vellum is gorgeous! You sure got lucky finding that. I remember you showing us that pack the first time and I looked everywhere online and in stores with no luck. We can stamp or emboss plain vellum or even acetate. Plain would be just as pretty. I want to make small ones for all my friends; just big enough for one light. I also think they'd be great as gift boxes at any size if the chimney part were made separate like the bottom is.

@@MixedUpCraft Yep! It turns out that I don't actually have a square punch, so I used a label punch and it's kind of adorable. I just need to re-work a little to make it a skosh wider cuz my corners aren't even a quarter inch and don't hide the flap.

Oh! I forgot to mention I only have plain vellums, so I used Christmas themed embossing folders to create a pattern for the square cutouts.

Just curious if anyone has an answer to my question: I know that the red tape is strong under normal circumstances, but does it hold up under very hot temperatures (during storage)? I live in Florida and never store my Christmas decoration in my attic, but even my garage gets very hot in the summer months. I would love to be able to use the red tape instead of glue for the ease of it. But if it doesn't hold up, I am wondering if I should use glue. This is very nice.

I worked for a major US craft chain for ten years and it's my experience that all commercially available glue will fail eventually and that heat makes it fail faster. That being said, wet glue and paper are besties because the glue gets into the fibers of the paper and makes a very strong bond. Vellum is the exception because the fibers are plasticized in order to create its translucency.
