If you lose the first two battles, Blue's Eevee will evolve into Vaporeon. If you win once or skip/lose the second battle, the rival will get Flareon. If you win the first two battles, the rival's Eevee will evolve into Jolteon which is what Trace will have in Pokemon Let's Go: Pikachu.

I used Red's Team from Pokemon Heartgold and Soulsilver to defeat Blue. I used Lapras instead of Eevee in the team. Fun Fact: The Final Rival Battle song in Pokemon Yellow is literally the final boss song which ended the monochrome Game Boy.

My Pokémon Team Pikachu Venusaur Charizard Blastoise Snorlax Eevee-Jolteon

In my last playthrough at the start of game, I had Pikachu, then by Curelean I added Pidgey, Mankey, Nidoran(male), Geodude, and Clefairy. Then on the SS Anne I had Mankey, Nidoking, Pikachu, Pidgeotto, Geodude and Charmander. During this time until the next rival battle Charmander gets sent to Gold/Silver for training(it learns Flamethrower much earlier over there) and after Nidoking beats Raichu at Surge's I put in the Daycare. Then at Pokemon Tower I have Primeape, Pikachu, Ivysaur, Pidgeotto, and Graveler(I still have Squirtle.) After this, by Celadon I have got my Charmander up to Lv33 on my Silver game and added moves Headbutt and Fire Punch and it is a Charmelon. I find the Eevee and evolve it to Jolteon and teach it the Thunderbolt TM which makes Pikachu expendable and I send it Gold and Silver to breed Pichus. By Silph Co. I have Jolteon, Venusaur, Charizard, Golem, Clefable, and Seadra(I caught it South of Lavendar Town) and that is the team I use for the rest of the game and for the championship fight against Gary. Pikachu, Primeape, Ninetails, Nidoking, Pidgeot, and Blastoise all get honorable mentions for being notable team members.

I like Pokémon Yellow better than Red and Blue because I was so connected to the anime as a child and battling Jesse and James was my favorite part. Also, naming my rival Gary and battling him was also pretty fun. Now, I can't wait to battle Champion Gary once I beat the Elite 4.
