Mike, one way to get your hay ground would be to find someone close that has a tub grinder that will grind it for you. It grinds it in a tub that turns and the knives/hammers are underneath the bales.

Try using dry molasses. It will not get sticky in warm and freeze in winter. We switched years ago and made life way easier for us

Maybe store future COB totes on a pallet in the heated shop in the winter so the molasses doesn’t freeze before running through the ArtsWay.

For as fast you go through your feed you could use a bigger bin or even a small gravity wagon. It also depends what you want to use and how much room you have in the barn.

I mentioned in previous videos when you first purchased that mixer that you should place a tarp under the machine for spillage......has molasses in the bag of mix which is why it's probably froze solid

Hi Mike, we are up in Montana and just started out with highland cattle. We are small (less than a dozen) scale but would like to know what you feed your cows and pigs prior to finishing. We just linked up with FBN thanks to you letting us know about them by the way. They will be a great resource for our little place. It seems like most of the folks that raise highlands do a “grass finish” but I don’t think that’s the route we want to take. We also have a protein tub out for them. I feel like we are winging it but they all look great. I just want to be sure we are doing things right. Thanks for the content!

I think you did good to get done what you did! Anyone who has worked with grain that has molasses in it knows how it will clump even in dry warmer conditions. Mike... Just a suggestion you might use a tarp to lay under feed ben of the mixer that way if you have a spill again it would make it easier to gather it up without it getting wet in the snow. I'm assuming the drier the feed the better it will store without mold forming in the feed.

A back in the 90s we used a machine that looks like a modern day small bale straw chopper to grind hay for the mixer and it worked great the only draw back if you didn't have small square bails you have to use a pitch fork. Also molasses gets hard in cold weather. Let you tote get warm in the shop if you can before mixing.

Great recipe. I’m very close on what I’m doing with just a few changes I’m able to get easier. I ended up with 12% protein and good fiber. Hadn’t thought about Timothy grass pellets but am using beets and alfalfa.

It tickles me every time I see the grinder mixer. Grew up in Iowa where every farmer had one, but I dated a guy who's dad milked cows. We couldn't go out on Saturday night until he/we had ground feed for the week for the milk cows lol circa 1970

This isn’t going to help now, but perhaps in future, what about getting a plastic kid’s swimming pool to put the auger tip down into? It would catch all the splatter and miss when dispensing grain from source bags onto hopper end of auger. When all done pouring you can then dump spilled grains back into batch. Keep pool behind bin for ongoing resource guarding.

Oh, does this bring back memories of watching my dad do this, during the winter in western Montana. No where near as scientific though. A few hay bales came of the pickup and went into the grinder up front and grain or oats were shoveled out of our grain bin and into the littler hopper on the other side. Pretty much I think the formula was - keep adding stuff until the top started to lift off.

What's the protein content in your alfalfa pellets? You should add that to your calculation to make sure you don't overload them.

may I suggest you look into powdered molasses for future feed mixes, I know molasses encourage my cows to eat the feed well but i do not mix my own but it might be a help to you mixing your feed

Another great video as always. I hate to tell you this but no mixer likes high roughage mixes. I’ve seen brand new top of the line mixers clog from high hay percentage mixes. They haven’t figured that one out yet. I’m sure you’ll figure it out though

Molasses is the shits in the winter. I got tired of busting up clumps so I switched to pellets when it gets cold. Those cattle will eat grain with or without molasses.

Do you have screen for grinder . One we had we had a hay screen it would grind up so it won't clog . We put the hay in last.

Back in the 1970's I worked at a large slaughterhouse. We had a madmen as the maintenance department engineer. He purchased 3 or 4 skids of 55 gallon molasses drums. We did not have the mandated water pollution system installed yet so he was mixing molasses with the contents of the slaughtered steers bellies and feeding it back to them. Contents appeared to be halve way between chewed up hay & manure. Steers would check it out maybe because sweet smell from molasses.They did not eat it. While helping guys move the molasses found out that it was the heaviest of any thing we had in 55 gallon drums. Was heavier then drums of lubricating oils, edible mineral oil ( used to lube air saws that cut meat ), etc. Once they got water pollution system running they removed over 50 55 drums of undigested hay & manure from entering waste water every day and thousands of gallons of blood that is harmful to fish ( might effect oxygen level in water ). Only one wastes company would accept this hay/ manure mixture. They mixed it with other waste then buried it in deep holes. Maybe 25 years later after grass grow over the dirt on dump site they built a few single homes that was told had major problem with houses sinking.

i handle those bulk bags all the time, push the bag against some thing solid, building side, fence post before you open it ,this will break up the contents and it will empty easily, good luck!

It might because the hay is damp. There is another v-log I watch and the use a similar machine to mix feed. She notices when the hay/clover,etc is damp the rotor get cluggy.

My guess was that the 200 pounds of molasses was 50% water which I suspected would be mostly gone. However if it was frozen because the molasses were not dry, then I was wrong.
