It will depend on the composition of your black. They won't all give the same color. Great to experiment. Thank you for sharing!!

The black I use is ivory black which is a cool/blue based black. But I’ve noticed not all “black” is created equal. Depends on the brand. Thanks for sharing!

I love your enthusiasm. I got my first gouache colors yesterday and got really frustrated because I could not even turn a light green into more lighter green with a yellow touch. But I after watched your video, it put a smile on my face. Now, I feel more comfortable to experiment more & get familiar with the composition of each color.

I'm a bit confused. If you mix yellow with black in watercolour you get the same muted green as you did with gouache? Just tried it out with Cad Lemon Yellon and Neutral Black (White Nights as it was I had on my desk). It comes from the black leaning "blue" when it comes to the neutral colours. That is also why you get black from mixing brown and blue. I would also suggest using Magenta (PR122, PV19) as your "red" so you can achieve a wider variety of mixes from your primaries. :) Have fun with your gouache experiments!

Thanks so much for this insight. I’ve just bought gouache to try ease myself into urban sketching, but was using it like watercolour.

great info Koosje! I just found some gouache with a matte finish, the others I tried were acrylic & too plasticky, so I’m going to play with a palette this week, perfect timing👍

I had a teacher say to use white gouache if you need a fine white line in your watercolor painting or if you have a mistake and need white space back. I may try more colors now and have some fun!

Koosje, does it not depend if you black is blue or red pigment based? Is that a thing? Thanks for the video, always inspired to get my paints out after your videos.

It probably is a thing, but I don’t know anything about pigments and am a beginner myself when it comes to painting.

yes. yellow and black is one of the mixes to come up with a shade of green. Painting with gouache is more akin to painting with oil than painting with watercolour. One works from dark to light, which is the opposite if you work with wateroclour.

i am completely novice with gouache just yet so pardon me if I'm wrong but, I've read (or heard maybe, i don't remember correctly) that almost all black gouache pigments have extremely dark blue undertones. so mixing it with lots of yellow might just give you green tones
@KoosjeKoene2 жыл бұрын
I am not an expert - you might be right, but it probably also depends on brand?

I saw the viedeo an hour ago. It was interesting to see the black and yellow mix resulting in green. I tried to find out which pigments Reeves uses for these colours, but I found nothing. My guess is that the black colour contains quite a lot of blue and that the blue mixed with yellow gives the green result. I also tried to find out which pigments other brands of gouache use for yellow and black but I did not find any information. Could you try mixing yellow and black from a different brand of colours?
@yasmineamelia61692 жыл бұрын
I use Talens black gouache and winsor & newton black gouache with yellow to create olive green. Works fine!
@hansdagborn45462 жыл бұрын
@@yasmineamelia6169 Hello Yasmine! Thank you for your comment. After reading it I did look up the Winsor&Newton black gouache colours. They produce 4 different Black colours. It seems all have only one pigment. However, in their comments the only one which seems to be “pure black” is the Jet Black. For Perylene Black they write that it has a Green Undertone, for Ivory Black there is a Brown Undertone and for Lamp Black they write that it has a Blue Tint. It would be interesting to know which black you are using.

@@hansdagborn4546 I looked it up! I use Ivory Black. It came in a set with ten different colours. I use it usually with the primary yellow paint of the same set, and it produces an olive green.

If you pick a luminous yellow in any digital painting app and then decrease the luminosity, the resulting shade will be green. Getting green by mixing yellow with black is partially due to the quirk of our vision.
