I saw this tip on one of your videos last year and it has been one of the biggest game changers in my mixes. It's crazy cause it's so simple but it makes such a huge difference

If you all cant find that trim plug in for some odd reason (like me) the gain plug in will work as well to switch everything to mono

I have a question. When you go Stereo and start panning instruments, doesn't that lower their volume in Mono and introduce phasing?. So if I correct that in Mono, it now ruins it on stereo, so how do you balance that?. How do you avoid going back and forth?. Sounds great in stereo, oh no, now it sounds bad in mono, ok it sounds good in mono, ohh no, now I ruined it in Stereo.

How do you deal with elements in the mix that are extremely stereo like pads that almost disappear in mono when mixing in mono. do you just disregard them and focus on more upfront elements, less ambient elements

I foolishly forgot to mix my latest track in mono over the weekend, I still ended up with a good mix but it took me longer than usual!

lets say I have a preset synth fx sound that's already in stereo. Should i convert the track audio to mono and then pan them or should i just leave it the way it is? I'm looking for the best solution to make my mix clearer.

While I am mixing should I mix the reverbs and delays (stereo) in mono too?
@afaromusic4 жыл бұрын
Good question. Answers anyone?
@GetSongsDone4 жыл бұрын
totally.. get the settings you like on the reverb while in stereo, but switch back and forth in mono to balance the level of the reverb with the rest of the mix.

What about when recording rap vocals? should i put that mono mode on before and still record on the mono track? or record mono and bus to mix in stereo?

@RollyPraise4 жыл бұрын
The only way you can mix in mono is if you can not hear or use one ear. All the sound we hear are mono. What we persive as sterio sound is that sound bounsing in diferent places.

I’ve tried switching my mix to mono via the stereo output but some things are still in stereo, notably my drum samples. I’m mixing midi tracks, I haven’t bounced them to audio yet, could that be having an effect?

if your DAW doesn't have an easy way to do this and you mix in headphones, try just putting one headphone on at a time.

Thanks for the awesome video! I have a question though. I'm a producer who also does my own mixing. I like to pan pretty much everything (except kick, bass, and vocals of course). Should I also produce in mono and leave the panning and any general stereo considerations for the mixing step?
@saheruthepharaoh3 жыл бұрын
Initially mix in mono, stay in mono to find the correct volume balancing, EQ, Compression, etc., that way once you have it to where you can hear every element, you know there’s a good balance. Once you’ve gotten to that point, open it up to stereo. Then do your panning, delay’s reverb and other spacial processing. Flip back to mono periodically to reference how things are continuing to sit. :)

Why a limiter not a compressor? just curious...
@JordanTelezino2 жыл бұрын
it makes sure nothing will go past the certain audio level so it caps it off past a certain point, puts a lid on top of the sound so it cant go past it, its useful if you dont want to change the sound and it has a few bits that randomly peak

you never mention gain staging, their loads of miss information around mixing help clear it up for the people . Do you gain stage 1st or not mate ?
@anegusproductions76204 жыл бұрын
Gain stage first and make sure the faders on your Daws console are set to pre-fader, I then try to get each individual track around -12db. I use softube console to achieve this. Literally all I do is turn the input gain down or up until my levels are sitting somewhere in that ball bark. You can use a Gain tool in your to achieve the same thing.
