In this video I share a mixdown tip about mixing in mono. This is nothing to do with the whole phase cancelation and stereo thing. The other great reason to mix in mono, is that it surprisingly makes it easier to do your volume balance, eq, compression, and overdrive. The main thing here, being your volume balance. This tip will work in any DAW including ableton, logic pro, fl studio, pro tools, cubase, reason and more! For more mixdown tips like this, subscribe! and check out my website with the link above :)

I've tried watching a few people who try to explain and teach things and they end up doing my head in but for some reason this fella is just easy to listen to and what he says sticks... There's an old adage which says "those that can't do, teach". It's a rare thing to find someone who can do both and this man can

Great tip! I'll have to give this a try. Quick question that maybe you could address in a video: How do you go about balancing sound design for mono compatibility? For example: I want to make some nice wide supersaw chords in a future bass track. They sound super powerful in stereo. But when I check in mono they sound like garbage. Any tips on how to balance a nice wide stereo sound while keeping mono compatibility in mind would be appreciated!

Thanks Ian! Great question. And good job of observing this in your song. The first step is indeed noticing it. So, if you listen to your stereo supersaw chords in mono and notice that the volume drops, then they are too wide. It is as simple as that. There is a point when you can go too wide and things will have problems. Whatever you used to make them wide is most likely just turned up too much. also, keep in mind that Serum naturally makes things too wide. You can adjust the stereo width of each oscialltor in the global section. I usually set this to about 45% rather than 100%. Let me know if that answers your question 🙂

Bass Kleph, what plugin do you recommend to put on your master while mixing in mono for the beginning? Or what one do you use?

In Ableton, I just use "Utility". Most DAW's will have a built-in plugin like this that will let you mono your stereo output.

So I should put all plugins in all tracks only mono? For eq compression and saturation and suffer

no, use stereo plugin on any track that you want to be stereo, but place a single mono plugin on your master buss, and switch it on and off through out the mix to make sure things still sound good in mono. I even recommend doing the first half of the mix with it switched on the whole time
