I’m just now getting around to watching. This is my most favorite guitar topic. I realize that chord tones, triads, arpeggios, modes etc. are important, but the absolute coolest licks I have in my arsenal have come from mixing and blending the overlapped major and minor positions within keys.

Wow color coded! Cool man! Brett, I always learn from you. I am at a point in playing where I am trying to mix major and minor notes after your lesson on finding notes inside chords from a previous lesson here. Its so great to follow you and the new levels you have taken me to in playing. I just wish I could jam with you and show you what I have learned from you. Maybe a clinic in different cities would be an option to consider with others like Marty. I would be willing to pay for a ticket to attend. You have been a great inspiration to me, and am at a point where I can play in front of people and get compliments for my efforts in my progress. I owe it to you and your GREAT lessons, thank you so much, and Merry Christmas to you and your family, and to all who are here. Kevin

I really like that bend you did on the 3rd string, when rather than going minor 3rd up to major 3rd, you start a half step lower. You said you got it from Eddie, but I've seen it in Hendrix's playing too. In Wind Cries Mary when he's on the F bar chord rooted on the 1st fret, he hammers on the 3rd string from open G to A on the 2nd fret. I always thought it was strange but cool sounding.

Bret- hopefully this is gonna blow YOUR mind (or at least make you go “oh damn!” 😁) but you brought up more than once in the video that you weren’t sure what that flat 5 move equates to if we’re looking at it from the major perspective...well check this out...if we’re thinking of it as a major box, that same note would be a flat 3rd! 🤯 so it’s actually quite similar to the other minor trick where we add the major 3rd in, but in a major context the flat 3rd becomes the outside/passing tone. Pretty cool the way that works out huh? Hey thanks so much for this lesson as well as all the other stuff! Been really digging what you do for a long time. Much love ✌🏼

Yep. The blue note in the major pentatonic scale is the minor 3rd, which provides the ultimate blues sound, especially when you bend it towards the major 3rd and stop just short. Also, when you play minor pentatonics in a major 12 bar blues, the blue note invokes a slight lydian sound, since it is actually more closely associated with a sharp 4 as opposed to a flat 5 found in locrian. After all it’s in a major key.

I'm really digging into your library and those "soloing over chords"-stuff. That really is some good s*it mate. Just came to my mind, that to me the 3rd is usually the chord that changes the "story". I don't know, why it came to my mind like that.

Speaking of the action, my action seems pretty darn high. I can't figure out how to play with low action. I can't bend unless my action is high because when it's low the strings will get in the way and start to slide under my fingers.

Brett. Great lesson! I have a question. I understand all of this and I know all 5 shapes for pentatonic. My problem is when ever it comes time to solo, my mind goes blank and I never use any of these new concepts, just basic pentatonic. I’m guessing I am not practicing correctly or missing something obvious. How do I develop a catalog of licks in my brain that will come out when I improvise? Thank you sir.
