The speed of his decision making is astonishing! What he did in 6 minutes would take me hours of trial and error. I believe it all comes down to the philosophy that he has an absolute vision of what he wants and he already know how to achieve it. I'm always curious as to the artist's take on his decisions or if they just trust his judgment, and just let him do his job.

James Cater this is still likely how he works. He’s a master. I actually studied audio engineering under Drew Mazurek (spelling) a decade ago and he was like this. He could spot and fix trouble spots in a mix in seconds. I learned a lot. Biggest most impactful thing he taught me was to compress the living shit out of the overheads for a huge snare sound. Tight drums brings the whole mix together.

@dantei.96615 жыл бұрын
In my humble opinion, the most important thing we should notice and ideally - remember - is how Chris always has an idea before starting to make his moves. He knows what he wants to hear there, and that's, of course, experience and years of mixing, but I think it's a priceless idea! It doesn't matter where in your mixing-game you are right now, try it and just simply tell yourself "Hm, let's go for a clean/bright/boomy/snappy/saturated/distorted sound with delay/reverb/etc." (Or whatever it is you call the sounds you hear). Then just go for it! It doesn't matter how it will turn out in the end. If you accomplished what you were looking for, then it's points for you, don't overthink it and go rough and trust your ears and instinct! If you kinda like some chain you made, save or remember it! Use it more often - with time you'll elaborate on this idea and refine with experience you gathered along the way. Perhaps it could become an unique tool in your arsenal.

I think he has had that room for the last seven years. It is all set up they way he wants and he can work very fast. BUT it is true that he works those controls quickly and by instinct almost. I noticed he will bring up the FX such as death flange, try it several levels, then bring it way up, then all the way down, then back up to where it suits and then leaves it. DONE. Amazing.
@pandanarkystudios51984 жыл бұрын
Its amazing how he takes the raw sound (which is great to begin with, I mean its muse, come on) and makes it into what you hear on the record. I would love to see just how the heck they take that studio sound and translate it to the live shows. All Musers know they dont use tracks, except for orchestra, yet they always sound so good even on stage. The tremelo of Matt's voice paired with his screeching guitars, the driving force that is Dominic Howard's drums, and the formidable bass lines of Chris (insert impossibly pronounced last name here). They are 4 very distinct sounds all put together, and somehow this guy makes them perfect, and somehow someone else is able to replicate that. Amazing

@BenRicoMusic6 жыл бұрын
Hearing the source sounds would be great. I'm pretty sure CLA doesn't hear raw files that often. You can bet that his team/assistants are cleaning things up, like edits, comping, grouping tracks and setting up his Pro Tools session before he hears it. I genuinely believe in mixing fast and trusting instincts along the way. The only way for that to happen is to have that session mix prepped, and ready for the person mixing it. *** Oh, btw, I believe there's a Muse Documentary for "The 2nd Law" album. It's a fun watch for any Muse fans, or aspiring engineers to learn something.

Assuming I'm not the only person who is mindblown by how much expertise and physical equipment (an entire room full!) is required to make what is essentially a digital file? It's weird that the industry has changed so dramatically and become so throwaway, yet we're still using techniques/equipment from the proper good old days. P.s: I'm glad this discipline still exists, and never once assumed that we'd gotten to the point that it was just "kid with Garage Band on his Macbook mixing shit", but I'm still puzzled as to why a room-sized, physical fader still exists. Already seems anachronistic.

Because analog hardware adds subtle harmonic distortion to sound as it passes through its tubes, transformers, and optical components. That harmonic distortion is usually pleasing to us and helps with perceived imaging in the 3-D sound field. Only within the past few years have personal computers become powerful enough to run plugins that passably emulate that distortion, and they are getting better all the time, but they still don't sound like the real thing.

Wow, thanks for the informative reply! I still don't understand half of it, but that makes much more sense to me now.

That's a good question in respect, but truth is nothing beats analog, as much as I love Pro Tools and software

When does he use the CLA plugins? = ]

I really want CLA to make a trolly video about how to make music on a laptop with a two channel soundcard and try and talk with a straight face about how all you need is more waves plug-ins for that 'studio' sound! :) Hehe

This proves that even excellent production does not make a bad album good.

I've seen enough to sign up for a monthly package myself but not to risk 329$. What if you get on the inside and it's shit? Why would someone want to pay for unlimited annual access to something with out really knowing what they're signing up for? Why don't you offer say 35$ month?

peter mcdonna you're right. Shitty marketing

I wish I could pay for access to ONE series of videos, like this one. I'd pay for it happily. I know myself - I don't have time to watch all of the videos to make $329/yr worthwhile. But once or twice a year, I'd love to watch one entire song mixed like this.

I signed up for the first year. It's worth more than $329 believe me.

Watch your step! Waves is fucking with you! You get a 50% offer and buy. 4 days later the same product costs 20% less! If you ask why Waves does this, you will be treated like a stupid person. Over the years, we've bought Waves products worth over $10,000 and recommend them to friends. We will never do that again and we advise everyone to watch out if they buy from Waves. There are now better companies like IZotope or Plugin Alliance! Don't let Waves fool you! They are not worth a cent!!

Yea, it is all about deciding on what you like and going with it. I produced music all my life and it all comes down to the sound you like at the time. Technical issues (pops, ect) are another bag.
