As crazy as it sounds, that quote was what changed my mixing game. I was always taught to never be dramatic with EQ when I went to school for it. "3db boost or cut should be fine, you don't need to do more than that". Watching CLA EQ drums and vocals and making big moves like a 9db boost was the wake up call that transformed everything.

@@sebastianlindon8992 Absolutely, I agree wholeheartedly. But when you're just starting out and being told what I was told early on while working on less than ideal recordings (done by other students), it would have been beneficial to have Chris's advice. I've since gone back to those recordings with what he's said in mind and it's changed the overall product dramatically. But you're right, both are important to understand.

.@@TM42 Your teachers were either stupid and didn't really have any real world experience with only ever reading blogs o mixing or they were always recording top musicians with top equipment in the proper acoustic environment and knew how to use the equipment perfectly to not have to touch tracks basically at all. EQ first and foremost is a tool to correct the sound at the end of a chain of multi variables. From how cose you stand, the effect to the eq curve the mic has built in to the tone of the person's voice. You then fator in variables like how good the person's ear and recording techniques are which in your case was likely shit as you said the tracks were from other students. So there really is no rules except fix what sounds like shit. Sometime there's a lot of shit on a track you need way more than just 3 db cut to get it out especially in a world were a lot of people track themselves now and then send it to get mixed. The tracks usually fucking suck and need a good amount of clean up.

Couldn't believe how much impact and raw energy it had by the end of the mix (tracking mix) . One of the best ever demonstrations I've found of an analog mixing process using outboard gear and a proper mixing console. I enjoy using the software emulations of popular analog gear. Particularly Scheps 73 (Waves Neve 1073 emul), Softube CL1B, CLA 76 and the Waves SSL E-Channel. But they don't have the same effectiveness and oomph that a hardware unit could provide. But with my current budget they've still served me very well, as I don't have the thousands of dollars to afford the real thing, as i'm still a student. CLA's a legend at his craft and a great teacher too. Not to mention the talent of the badass drummer too :) Great video guys! @@FanaticDrummer Hmmm, that one I would be interested in getting some expert takes on. There would definitely be somewhat of a sonic difference, like any eq, but from my understanding; the difference (after the pre-amp and properly gain-staged) between processing through hardware and software is going to be almost imperceptible. There is enough bit depth in a 24-bit track that unless you're trying to increase frequencies/volume by A MASSIVE AMOUNT with software, it'll be very similar to doing the same in hardware (where things like noise are more of an issue than any software artifacts). Though I would love to hear from a pro out there if anyone is reading this.

I hope that this doesn't give inexperienced engineers the idea that they should just start tracking with eq that they may have to fix in the mix. We all must learn somewhere, but a basic understanding of mic placement is key to great recordings. CLA is a Master at what he does, so his experience in tracking bands, trusting his ear, and knowing the gear in this studio gives him the advantage for making eq decisions in the recording process. Nonetheless, it's inspiring!
@jas_bataille

Well, every inexperienced engineer is working solely in the box, so you can always re-do it later. However, opinions may vary : new engineers need to learn how to *commit* to mixing decisions, otherwise, they end up doing endless back-and-forth with the Control Z button. As someone who learned how to mix FOH first, with an experienced Yamaha engineer in my back, and my 23 years old ass riding the EQ during a live performance sweating my ass off until I was able to say "no I think I'll do it this way" to my boss... there is no better school. EQ is only problematic if you try to rely on it to have good sound rather than enhance the dry sound from the mics.

This is the way I learned to record drums. Same mics, same EQ points, same everything. Simple and classic. It just works. I was even taught to pan the drums backwards like he does. I've learned to fix that one issue.

It sounds amazing. Nowadays drums sound thin and too clean. Everyone is so precious about not introducing any noise to their recording, it's ridiculous - we're making music, not scientific measurements!

The thing is : the goal is to always make it better than it is. So if you start with something real good you can make something amazing. If you start with something "meh" you can only make it good. So yeah you could do nothing and have a good sounding mix but you could also put in the effort and make it an amazing sounding one

It's a good point, it would be interesting to see him go into a crappy local studio with an average kit/drummer and cheap desk/outboard/mics. I'm sure he'd kill it, but it wouldn't sound anywhere near as good as this where the room, the kit, the drummer, and the mics/channel strips are giving you every possible advantage

I used to hate it when some young ex-university type would be engineering and doing these tiny tweeks of the EQ which we could all hear made zero difference to a mix especially when everything was in but he would try and convince us that HE could hear something that we couldn't like he had these magic super sensitive ears. What a bunch of bullshit and so nice to hear this guy saying don't be shy with EQ and doing big bold changes that did make an audible difference.

this is what you call experience vs. experience period. Like Chris said when you have a great drummer it falls into place and the drummer is like when you have a great engineer same thing. It goes hand in hand.

I wonder if that was all in realtime or if there were made some cuts in the editing. If not, then CLA just dialed in an entire Drumset in 10 minutes. Thats a man who truly knows his way around the Studio! Also this video shows how important the communication between the engineer and the musician really is. I think these little comments from CLA into the talkback ("You Rock! etc...") really go a long way, so the drummer doesn't feel left out of the process.

@@creativical You should have stopped at the first question. The next 2 are a reflection of what you would do if you were in my position which do not belong to me. Since you asked I answer the only real question, the first. What I want to say is that it took him 10 or 20 years to be able to find the right formula + knowing everything about the board and the outboard gears he uses, for a quick mix, that's why I said come back in 10 years as you would understand better and maybe be equally capable of doing what he does.
