I can confirm that you can have mixed modules with no problems, at least if you choose similar rated modules with similar (or close enough) timings. I had 16gb DDR4 3200 of gskill trident z rgb memory, and wanted to get 32gb. I got a cheap pair of corsair vengeance lpx ddr4 3200 16gb modules and put them in my PC. I knew about the potential problems you could have with mixed ram so I went ahead and matched the speeds AND the timings manually. I got all of my ram modules to timings that were better than advertised! I went from 16CL to 14CL on all of my modules, and I believe I could get them to run as high as 3600mhz (possibly more) but my current motherboard (B350) only allows up to 3200mhz. Edit: forgot to add that I havent had a single BSOD since I mixed my RAM. It's been stable for almost 2 years haha.

Nowadays the memory controller sits in the CPU, that puts the MB mostly out of the question. As example: with my old i5 I can run either 4.4 GPU + 2133 RAM or 4.5 CPU + 2000 RAM, but both at the "max" is not stable. Be happy that OC is so easy nowadays.

What I have seen, generally mixing different ram brand or even different speeds will work fine if the PC uses the speed of the slowest module as long as they are of the same ddr generation. However, for optimal performance, you should use identical modules. Hey Greg, I need some advice on a RAM configuration issue with my new build! Problem: I'm building a new PC with an MSI B650M WiFi Gaming motherboard and I have 4 sticks of DDR5 RAM but there's a mix: - 2 sticks of Corsair Vengeance RGB DDR5 6200 MHz (XMP). - 2 sticks of Corsair Vengeance RGB DDR5 6000 MHz (XMP/EXPO). I know mixing RAM with different speeds and profiles (XMP and EXPO) can be problematic, so I’m trying to find the best way to get them to work together stably. My Proposed Solution: 1. I plan to install only the 6000 MHz EXPO kit first and enable the EXPO profile to let the motherboard automatically set the timings, frequency, and voltage. 2. I’ll note down the settings (timings, frequency, and voltage) applied by the EXPO profile. 3. Then, I’ll install the 6200 MHz XMP kit and disable the XMP/EXPO profiles in the BIOS. 4. I’ll manually input the settings I noted earlier to match the EXPO kit’s configuration. 5. Finally, I’ll run some stability tests to make sure everything works fine with all 4 sticks installed. What’s Your Take Do you think this method will work to achieve a stable setup, or is there a better approach you would recommend for mixed XMP and EXPO RAM on an AM5 motherboard? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Of course I will downclock the Corsair ram to match 2133, it's what the mobo/cpu combo supports anyways. Just bought them cus they were cheaper than the 2133 version for some reason. I do believe both ram sets have CL of 14-14-14, so that should work out fine.

Maybe it's because of a strong sense of perfectionism, but I've just never liked the idea of mixing RAM. When I built my current Ryzen system in August of last year, I bought a 32GB (2x16) Corsair Vengeance LPX 3000MHz CL15 kit, and in the time since added two other 16GB Corsair Vengeance LPX 3000MHz CL15 modules--purchased them when they were at their lowest prices. Just to avoid issues. The one exception was when I had 16GB HyperX Blue 1600MHz DDR3 CL10, and I wanted to max out the DIMM slots on my Gigabyte 990FXA-UD3 with 32GB. By the time I wanted to add another 16GB, I think Kingston discontinued or rebranded the Blue line as HyperX Fury--and people were asking silly prices for the original HyperX Blue modules. I had to go with 16GB HyperX Fury 1600MHz CL10 in Blue. I think the specs were the same or similar, different designs/aesthetics, and it annoyed the crap out of me. Even if my old rig didn't have a window...just knowing was enough.

I think the most common use case for mixxing modules is someone buying dual channel memory when the machine is built then 3 years down the line buying another dual channel memory kit of the same, or 1 step higher capacity. (IE Starting with 2x2GB, then buying 2x4GB meaning they have now 12GB - This is what I did with the machine I made back on 2010.)

I have a question. Can two different SKU of the same RAM brand & model work together? My rig which runs a R5 2600 on an MSI B450M Mortar originally rocks a Kingston HyperX Fury 8GB (HX426C16FB2/8). But the new RAM I bought online ended up being a newer SKU, HX426C16FB3/8. Specwise, both modules appear identical - single rank, 16-18-18 timing, 2666mhz freq.

Thanks for the video, man. I'm researching this and is good to have some answers. Also, do you recommend those Team Group RAMs? I found an 2666mhz for cheaper than an 2400mhz from Hyper X Fury. I still might get the Hyper X because my current module is from them (though 2133mhz) but part of me really wants to get the higher speed since I'm probably gonna upgrade my i5 6600 next year. Anyway, heard some bad things about Team Group and the price makes me unsure if it's a good choice.

Always informative videos. Greg, my grandchildren just got me a New iMac 27" 5K. this iMac was built last week and is the NEWEST MODEL. Question... I want to Upgrade the RAM, it has 8gb. I can get 32gb (2X16g) model fairly cheap... My question is What SLOTS would I use? I'am just going to use the 16gb modules, so when I pull them out, SHOULD I PUT the 16gb modules ion the SAME POSITION AS THE ONES I PULL OUT? Also, see that the 16gb Modules are so cheap would it be okay to use 4 X 16gb Modules for a total of 64gb? Any help is appreciated. I'm not tech savvy, at 78 I need all the expert advise I can get. Thanks

But the twice I've ran all four dimms ive got random black screens. Could this be the cause? how would I check what caused the black screen?

@@FaithlessEmoRacing I could never find what caused the the blue screens even with hours of running diagnostics. I am an electronics tech, just not on PCs. It might go a week without crashing. Then it might crash 4 times in an hour. Usually the error code was some generic stop code, and rarely the same thing. Sometimes it would indicate a driver issue. The Windows blue screen analyzer never found anything. Rant: "I thought the sticks from my old PC were compatible, Dell even confirmed it. Same speeds, same type, same timings (I thought). They were both CL11. I had mysterious and random blue screens for years. Every diagnostic test I ran was fine and showed no problems with any of the hardware. I replaced HDD, Graphic card, installed new drivers, cleaned and reseated every cable and connection, etc. Even a clean install of Windows didn't fix it. I figured it was just an unreliable PC. Finally, just before my last resort of buying a new PC, I pulled the 2 older RAM sticks. Poof, no blue screens since. I don't even notice having 4GB less RAM and I would pay a lot to avoid the hassle of random and frequent BSOD." It turned out the new RAM timing was 11-11-11-19 and the old was 11-11-11-26 (or something like that). 8GB is enough for me and I do some 1080P video editing with Davinci Resolve. It actually seems to run better without the extra 4GB. Fewer interrupts from memory error correction I imagine.

I'm planning to buy an extra pair of ram to add my system, I"m currently having 2 sticks. Could you do a testing video, running ram86+ and other stress tests, gaming and application test runs on systems with: - same ram (same model, manufacturer, speed, CAS, etc.) but different purchases. Basically, you got a pair, then after a few years, decided to buy another pair, exactly the same, later. - different ram model, but same speed and CAS - You wanted more ram, but the one that you bought before is no longer available or is substantially more expensive than another pair that you found or you prefer another pair due to its aesthetic. - different models, speed, CAS. - Like, buying a higher speed ram so that it will work fine when downclocked to the slower ram's speed and timings. I would love to see test results of those but I don't have extra ram on hand to test and couldn't find concrete information anywhere else.

I have a laptop with 8GB DDR4 RAM (2133Mhz) I want to upgrade it and a little bit confused as to how to go about it... only one stot is empty, So can I install a 16GB DDR4 ram(Making total of 8+16=24GB) in that so in future I can remove existing 8gb one and install another to make a total of 32GB(in future). and also can I install a higher frequency RAM (I know It'll run at 2133 for now till it's paired with my existing one) for future perspective. What's your input to this. Hoping for an informative response. Thanks

I have a laptop with 2 slots of memory. It has 2x2gb rams with the name MT8KTF25664HZ-1G6M1, meaning it has 4gb total. It has a max of 16gb (it's an old fujitsu life series i5 gen4) I plan to upgrade my RAM, I'm thinking of either getting 2x4gb rams totalling to 8gb or getting 1 8gb module (for now) because I plan to buy another 8gb module down the line (either option fits my current budget). Here's my question. If I opt to go for a single 8gb ram for now, can I partner that with the preinstalled 2gb ram. FYI both the 8 and 2 gb rams are both DDR3L, 1600mhz, 204pin and everything else. Only difference is the GB. Can I do that? And will that cause issues?

Not sure if I'll get an answer, but to this point, I've found nothing searching the internet. I bought two sets of Corsair Vengeance memory. One a while back, one the other day. (exact same set, supposedly) The older set has Hynix DRAM chip, M-die, dual rank. The new set, for some reason, has a Samsung DRAM chip, B-die, single rank. Will I have any issues as far as compatibility/performance goes, such as OCing the RAM to get to the 3200mhz speed that the modules are rated at? Is there anything else I should watch out for? Lastly, is it worth my time to replace two of the sticks to ensure they have the same DRAM chips?

Hey Greg quick question, I bought two sets of identical ram, Trident Z RGB 3000Mghz, when I plug them all in it reads that I have installed 32gbs of Ram but states I can only access 16GBS of it. I was wondering if you had a video or know of a creator who may have explained how to fix this issue? I assume it has something to do with the memory timings and I tried to tweak that on my own but for whatever reason the timings volts and speeds just wouldn't stay saved when I exited the bios it just defaulted back to the preset.

Both of my main systems are running mixed memory. Desktop is running a 16Gb kit (crucial ballistix sport VLP) and a 8 Gb kit (HyperX Blu) in dual channel for 24Gb of RAM. Running at their stock speed (of 1600Mhz) I've had no issues with stability. My Laptop is running whatever memory it came with and I added an extra 8Gb stick to both increase its capacity but also to get dual channel out of it. I think the important thing when mixing memory is that you ought to try to get as closely matched memory as is feasible. For example, if you have 2666Mhz memory already installed (as was the case with my laptop), then there is little point buying say 3200Mhz memory to add to it. Instead in my case I bought the recommended 2666Mhz stick for my laptop. The timings are very slightly different, but the two sticks are close enough that I've not thrown money away when one of the sticks is slowed down very slightly because of the other. And I've not significantly risked stability because, again the timings were close enough that even if, some how, one was made to run with slightly tighter timings there would not be enough of a difference that the memory would be unstable

I'm got it for the most part, but I'm still a little confused. Would I be able to run 2 different brands of ram both at @3200mhz and 8gb for quad channel? For example 2x Corsair and 2x TridentZ both @3200mhz and 8gb (32 gbs in total). And if so, is there anything I would have to do to allow the computer to run quad channel with 2 different brands or would it automatically pick up all 4 ram sticks. I'm fairly new to pc building and I want to put all my ram to use.

I have two G.Skill memory kits in my Athlon 200GE system. Same family and specs, but manufactured four months apart. I can run two sticks from the same or different kits with no problems. The older kit can run either stick in any slot. The newest kit has one stick that can ONLY run in the first slot when using four sticks. It took me two hours to figure out that combination. For whatever reason, I had to add the first stick, reboot, add second stick, reboot, and add the other two sticks before all four sticks could work together. I understand this has to do with the 1st gen memory controller in the 200GE.
