Thank you for this test, it’s a ‘good news’. If somebody wants to upgrade to XTR shifter on old 11 speed setup then going with this one will be ‘future proof’ and that’s a good enough reason. I guess then the different cable pull is in the rear mech and 9100 shifter/rear mech combo will not be compatible with the old 11speed cassette... but I’m almost sure you will try it and let us know. :)

Just bought a M9100-IR Shifter. I wanted that for my 11 spd drive train to get rid of the overly stiff m8000 shifter. I also had the bar clamp version and thus ergonomics weren’t the best. However I was quite surprised as mode switch was missing! This is 12 speed only. Probably it is missing just on the I spec ev version. I got it to work on 11-46 xt cassette. At least partially. It either won’t hold the 46t lowest gear (tends to go back to 2nd lowest gear) or refuses to shift into 10th gear. Probably my mech hanger isn’t properly aligned. This I still have to check. Just installed the cable with the shifter being in the highest gear. Limit screw of rear mech on lowest gear prevents the XTR shifter to click into the 12th gear. My guess is that the mode switch you showed is really to reduce the number of positions down by one and nothing more. As I remember, 11 spd M9100 is the exact same spacing as 12 spd M9100. So any 12 spd Shimano shifter will do I conclude.

LoveMTB Comming back to that. I checked the mech hanger and found it to be straight. I also discovered that the chain can be held on the 46t cog by shifting into the 12th index position of the shifter. That means shifting from 2nd lowest to lowest gear is literally a double click, not a single as you‘d expect. The obvious problem is that if I miss to shift twice the chain keeps falling back to 2nd lowest gear which I suppose won‘t be long until the chain gives up. This misshift happend several time by accident and I feel I cannot arrange with that. So, Iam not going back but save the 11 spd bits for one of my kids. Now going SLX cassette, XTR shifter, XT chain and Deore rear mech. Of course all 12 spd. Curious about Hyperglide Plus.

Hey thanks for doing this test! It opens the door for the 11spd garbaruk 10-50 cassette and lower profile Shimano mech and their less clunky shifter feel! I don't like Sram cassette spacing, too many double shifts in the middle range making 12 kind of pointless.

The M9100 shifter has one very basic advantage over the M9000 shifter, apart from the added gear. It has the multi release function when you *pull* the trigger, which the M9000 didn't have.

Not sure what to make of this. My impression is that Shimano's M9100 cassettes (both 11 and 12) have different sprocket pitch to the older 11 cassettes. The M9100 derailleur has the same movement ratio as M8000 (no surprise this swap worked), but the M9100 shifter doesn't pull the same amount of cable. I would not expect an M9100 shifter/M8000 derailleur combination to work well with an M8000 cassette. Can you measure the actual width of your M9100 and M8000 cassettes?

More interested in eagle shifter with xtr 12 speed cassette. Xtr has different spacing than eagle, seems like xtr spacing on biggest 3 or 4 cogs would be better?

What's the old XT cassette used in that clip? I have an 11-speed m7000 11-42 cassette and rear M7000 rear derailleur but by mistake bought M7100 brake levers which are I-Spec EV. To make the most out of the existing gear I'd like to pair it with 11 speed I-Spec EV shifter. The M5100 will do but I was wondering if this M9100 could be an option for me also?

I have my personal answer your question: Why would you want to use a 12 Speed Shifter with an 11 Speed Derailleur? I want to use the 11 Speed "Bailout" Cassette from 3T Corporation that is a 9 - 32 Tooth Cassette that has a 9, 10, 11, 12, & 13 Tooth Option for my 9 Speed Mountain Bike that I am reconfiguring into an 11 Speed Gravel Bike. I can put a 48 or 50 Tooth Outer Chainring on my Trek Mountain Bike and have Road Bike Gear Ratios that are enormous! 3T Corporation won an innovation award for their 11 Speed 9 Tooth Cassettes, and for those of us that don't care about the inefficiency of small cassette cogs, their "Bailout" Cassette gives an enormous reach on mountain and gravel bike frames that can't fit 54 Tooth Chainrings. When I will use the Inner 34 Tooth Chainring I will have the Gear Ratios to ride any Mountain Bike Trails that I am interested in. I have no interest in racing mountain bikes, and I don't need 46 or 52 teeth on my cassette. I want 12 Speed Capability because I want the option to use 12 Speed Mountain or Road Cassettes in the future if the expensive 3T Cassettes become no longer available!!! If better 9 Tooth Cassettes with small gear jumps like this become available in the future, they probably will be 12 Speed. That means that I can probably save money on the cassette and have more gear options. If this happens I don't want to have to repurchase derailleurs and shifters! Thank you again for all of your work making these videos!!! Because they answer a lot of questions on equipment compatibility. I had two professional bike techs reconfiguring my 20 year old Road Bike for a 2 X 12 setup. They are OUTSTANDING Professional Bike Mechanics that got the job done. Before I took in a 1 X 12 Mountain Bike with Shimano Compatible 11 Speed Chainrings with a 12 Speed SRAM XD E*Thirteen Cassette to prove you can mix some 12 Speed Technology, I took notes on your video demonstrate the use of 12 Speed Chains from Shimano and SRAM with Chainrings and Cassettes of the other Corporate Standard. the only reason I am thinking of doing this for next season is based off the claims that the shifting on the new shifter is >30% easier to shift. always felt that the XTR were to stiff and after riding 2 -3 hours of technical trails they get uncomfortable. I'm assuming the setup will work with sram 11 speeds cassettes as well. not sure if your going to test to verify if it works but it should be worthwhile

I've just purchased a new M9100R shifter. The packaging has now changed to just show 12speed and they have removed (covered up) the screw that you twist to change to 11/12sp. You can still change the speed but now your have to do this before setting up the cable. I assume they took it off the packaging as it was confusing customers, to suggest they can use it with a real 11speed (2017 style) My question is - do you think the pull ratio has be changed since you released this vid, so that the shifter does the ratio change rather than the rear mech? seems unlikely. But i dont want to set this up in case of not working. Has anyone tried this setup - new m9100 shifter with old m8000/m9000 drivetrain recently?

@@zerocool675 Same question/problem here. M9100 11sp 10-45 cassete with M9100 shifter without adjuster do convert from 12sp to 11sp. Did you have sucess with the limit screw adjuster?

@@downhiller010 no success, unfortunately sent it back. it only works well with a specific 11 speed shimano cassette that had the same spacing between cogs as the 12s, but that was never mass produced, which is why they eventually just removed the 11 speed switch under the shifter. It does not perfectly shifter w a normal 11s cassette. If I adjusted it to work well from the smallest cog, by about 6 cogs up it was just slightly off. I didn’t wanna deal w that. The limit screws did stop it from going into 12s tho if you have them set right. But yea, I can’t stand it if my shifting is even remotely off. Went back to the 11s XT shifter.

I like separate clamps, cus I can adjust the angle, but still it's not enough adjustment for me, and can swap out shifter or brake at any time, if I damage it or it fails.

I consider doing this because in the future I want full xtr 9100 on my bike. But I do not want the 12 speed cassette and mech. 11 speed xt mech with E13 9-46 cassette is enough for me and I like that's is more compact and takes up less space than 12 speed. Therefore I have the oppertunity to go full xtr with ispec ev and still running the same old 11 speed cassette and mech.

I bought the 12 speed xtr shifter with switch for 11 speed and use a 12 speed slx derailleur as you used in this video however I am wanting to use an 11 speed sram cassette, not xt cassette like in your video, will this work or do sram and shimano 11 speed cassettes have different spacing? I don't understand how this can even work as I thought a 12 speed cassette takes up the same width on the freehub as an 11 speed which would suggest it has to have narrower spacing. Niw given that the 12 speed shifter simply eliminates 1 gear when shifting to 11 speed and doesn't change the pull ratio, I don't understand how this even works, unless it's because the tolerances are sloppy enough that the chain will catch onto the closest sprocket even if it's a few mm out of tolerance, in which case that would mean it may work but isn't ideal and will cause unneccesary friction and drivetrain wear.....

I just got this shifter myself (no 11 speed screw anymore), however, I believe if you have your limit screws on the derailleur correct, it won't be able to click into the 12th speed anyways. In a way, the screw may not be necessary.

I would like a shifter of a higher class than the M5100 that I have now. But an XT level M8000 shifter costs the same as two M8100 shifters. I love my current M8000 transmission as well as the freehub wheels. The 8100 rear derailleur is very bulky. The gear range is redundant. And also, to switch to the M8100 transmission, you need to change the wheel hub and cassette. But I realized that this is not a working idea. @@LoveMTB 12 speed is inferior to 11 speed in any way. First, the precision is worse even with non covid shimano parts and it lies in the nature of 12 speed in general. If you adjust the click wheel by 1 click it can already operate with non precisison. I mean temperature changes then can already elongate or shorten the shifting cable by a margin bigger than one click. So if you ride down a mountain you would have to adjust 1 click up or down. How stupid is that? Also the chain is narrower and therefore more brittle and the life span also is shorter. Then the teeth of the cassette are narrower also making the life span of it shorter than 11 speed or lower speed cassettes. Also you can't use 11 and 10 speed interchangably, only 12 speed possible, no adjustments possible. So everything is worse except for the 1 extra gear that you don't need.

Shimano engineer their products to very high standards, from Deore through XTR it all seems to work flawlessly for long periods of time. Same with tires, Vittoria seem to simply perform well in all areas of their design.

Actually M8000 rear mech works very well with Sunrace 11sp 11-50t cassette and even better with medium cage (GS) than with long cage (SGS). So for me that sounds like M7000GS rear mech + 12sp. Sram NX 11-50t (Shimano freehub) + M7100 shifter could be possibly the cheapest and most reliable budget 12 speed setup.

@@LoveMTB Rear mech range is not a problem, stock M7000GS, 8000GS or 9000GS can handle 50t cassette with no problem and will work with any Sram / Shimano shifter (11/11 or 12/12). My actual setup is NX rear mech, XTR 9100 shifter, 12sp chainring. If you want more reliabilty, switch shifter setting to 11sp and go 11 chain and cassette, if you want smaller gap between sprockets set shifter to 12 and install 12sp chain and cassette.

@@josepablomartinez6821 after much trial and error I ended up going with the 11 speed Shimano Deore cassette (51T) and rear derailleur . Since then I have replaced one RD. The jockey wheel cage is stamped steel and seems to bend easily. Running those got me to the 95% success level and the parts are very affordable.

@@blindmanhomer I'm afraid that the reason that what's showed in the clip is possible (using 12sp shifter with 11sp derailleur and cassette) is that the actual cable-pull-per-click is the same with 12sp and 11sp shifters, and the difference is in the cage-to-cable movement ratio in the derailleur itself: i.e. you need to buy a 12sp derailleur as well, unfortunately. Please correct me if I'm wrong, would be great to know as I also already have a not worn out M8000 derailleur.

Will not work, 11sp chainring (XT) is to thick, 12sp (XTR) chain doesn´t sit properly - tried by myself ... 12sp chainring with 11sp chain will work.

I can confirm this shifter does NOT work with a Sram 11 speed cassette. I don't know what sorcery of barrel adjust, cassette spacing or if he actually had the shifter set to 12 speed in this video, but using this shifter set to 11 speed with the slx derailleur as used in this video combines with a sram 1175 11 speed cassette does not work. When the shifter is set to 11 speed the max gear the derailleur will go in on the 11 speed cassette is gear 10. Additionally it doesn't shift properly, some gaps take two lever pushes for one shift and there is binding all the way through the cassette. Tbh I knew this would be the case before I even fitted the chain as you can see when shifting the derailleur the jockey wheels move a smaller amount than the spacing of an 11 speed cassette, but for some reason I bought into this video hoping for the best. Save yourself time and money and don't try to do this, luckily I bought the shifter on ebay half price snd can always use it if I change to a 12 speed cassette, the shifter itself is fantastic, very positive clicks with little slop and fantastic rubber grips on the levers but it will not work with a true 11 speed drivetrain, the little 11/12 speed switch as shown in this video simply stops the shifter switching into 12th gear to be used specifically with Shimanos 9100 series 11 speed cassette that uses 12 speed sprocket spacing. So thete you have it guys, you can watch this vid, spend money and most likely end up disappointed, or learn from my mistake and trust that Shimsno was tellimg the truth all along when they said it isn't compatible. As far as tge derailleurs are concerned, yes a 12 speed derailleur will work on an 11 speed drivetrain as the indexing is all done by the shifter, however an 11 speed derailleur is unlikely to work on a 12 speed system simply as thr granny ring on a 12 speed cassette is usually much larger and 11 speed derailleurs do not have a long enough cage or throw to work. I can also confirm otherwise that a sram 1175 cassette shifts no worse than an xx1 gold eagle cassette, so if you want to save, money, weight and have no need for a 50t cog stick with 11 speed it shifts every bit as well if not better.

And i remembered you tried a 11speed rear mech in a 10speed drivetrain 2015 in one of your videos. So im guessing you still have the 10speed drivetrain to test a 12speed rear mech.

I have the exact same xtr 12/ 11 speed. I used to run a xtr 2x11 system, but now i am upgrading it to 12 speed. When i turn the little screw from 11s to 12 s i still can only do 11 clicks with the shifter.. and when i switch it back to 11s i can only do 10 clicks... any idea What to do?

That is correct! In 12 speed mode, you will have 11 clicks because you start on gear #1 and go to gear #12, which is 11 gears moved. Same with 11 speed mode, gear #1 to gear #11 is 10 clicks, not 11.

How this even works? 12s has thinner shift distance on the cassette and the switch on the shifter just removes one click.
