Lower secondary students are ‘tweenagers’ - no longer children, but not yet young adults. Serious and interested in real-world issues on the one hand, and playful and childlike on the other. The latest findings from educational research and cognitive psychology show how important the content of our teaching is if we want to reassure 'tweenagers' that we take them seriously for who they are. If we can do this, we will be able to build rapport with them and develop a classroom culture that they want to belong to. This will increase their motivation to learn, get them to take us and their studies seriously, leading to better language learning, and more fun - for our learners and for us as teachers.
