Paralell compression is the heaviest and most powerful weaponry in a musician's arsenal, gotta learn this folks!!!

Is it just me or does anyone else do what he says on your track and get really upset that it sounds incredibly better...? Thank you so much, Graham! You've taken my mixing to a whole new level!

I do this all the time for drums. I also do the same with the entire mix (without the drums) and blend it with the more dinamic mix, I really like this approach. Thanks for these videos Graham! Cheers

Parallel compression is definitely one of the most important tools for a good rock/metal drum mix. I usually use 2-3 parallel busses with different characters. Also using some sort of saturation/clipper on the master drum bus to get more headroom is a good idea if loudness is your goal.

Always the best tips and tricks here! Thanks again man. My mixing skills have dramatically increased because of your videos.
@sarahtonin46496 жыл бұрын
I love it on drums, it's amazing how little of it you need to blend in for a pretty dramatic effect. Interestingly, the guy on Sonic Scoop says if you don't use a very fast attack, and boost the highs and lows, you "defeat the whole purpose" of parallel compression. That seems a bit pendantic to me. I go with whatever sounds best. :-)

Really great video Graham! I've done this for so long on my mixes without knowing the why, just that it sounds really good. You explain things really well.

oh, also should throw a saturation plugin on the track right after the compressor and go nuts! Get it really crazy sounding!

Will the last video in the series be side-chaining? (e.g. maneuvering the bass line with the kick drum) If not... maybe part 8?
@uguroktem81437 жыл бұрын
Graham has that exact video in his list though. I watched it a few days ago and he perfectly explained how to do the side-chain there. Cheers buddy :)

Outstanding video. Thank you! Your link at this time for Compression7 doesn't seem to be working. I get as far as entering my email address, then just get a spinning wheel. I'd love the list. Will keep trying or email you. Thanks again!

When you send a track, will it send before the inserts or after them?
@amado54907 жыл бұрын
Are the Kicks and Drums fully routed to the bus channels DRUMS and P Drums? In Logic there's a knob that's visible on the mixing panel telling you how much of the individual tracks are being sent to every bus. I don't see that here, so I wonder if the tracks Kicks and Drums are fully sent, or whether there's some blend going on. I just can't seem to get the right "paralleled" sound.

Grate video. But.. hmm.. What about phase problem after using PARALLEL EQ (especialy hpass filter)?
@stephenfell43384 жыл бұрын
Do you still keep on the initial added compression on the raw original tracks or not?
@arrik13378 жыл бұрын
Probably a stupid question, but wouldn't this be quite the same as fiddling with the "mix" knob in your compression plugin? Because even if you don't touch the original track, simply putting the copy on top of it will take away/add from/to the space. The last thing, the dialing in is pretty much just dialing up the mix knob, no? You might need to use a bit more make up gain to achieve the same, but it seems like parallel compression can all happen on one track, without duplicates, no?

why is it when i do parallel compression on my vocals my vocals start to phase? can someone help?
@Petar908 жыл бұрын
invert the polarity to be the same
@RunawayTV8 жыл бұрын
what does that mean?
@Petar908 жыл бұрын
type phase issues on youtube and check it. Its easy
@lamachineamixer8 жыл бұрын
If it phases, it's because your software doesn't compensate the plugin delay properly or (if you are on Pro Tools) it's because you didn't turn on the "delay compensation" option (under : Options).

Can you create a video on mixing and mastering a rap track.
@wickstorm_records8 жыл бұрын
It sounds better because it gets louder. Just turn up the volume fader
@GITMmusic8 жыл бұрын
Markiso Wickstorm in this case maybe, but what your are generally aiming to do with parallel compression is either expand and compliment the transients of the original track, or add more compression and punch to the attack without having it effect the transients. Parallel compression and turning up the volume fader are extremely different things!
@peanutbutteronmyguitar70058 жыл бұрын
the a/b wasn't that useful because what it also did was increase the volume. Louder almost always sounds better
@ChrisRodriquez8 жыл бұрын
true, it was louder but if you really listen in the drums are gaining "weight" by blending it in. Graham is pretty subtle with it but in the full mix you can really hear how it makes them cut a little better.
@peanutbutteronmyguitar70058 жыл бұрын
I know that this is what it is supposed to be doing. I only sad that the A/B could have been done better. Maybe with a total Volume of both (the normal and the compressed) against another Track with only the volume increased.
