Funny watching this from 7 years ago. The Waves stuff looks vintage now 😂 Still a great tutorial. Thanks, Mike. I’m a much better mixer because of your talent & graciousness.

Thanks Mike! This is a reeeeally good tutorial. I’m a geezer with 15 years in the all-analog world, and this has been a really good lesson on the digital approach to it. 😎👍👍 It’s interesting how the Waves Renaissance plugins are still a standard.

De-ess the signal going into the reverb..that's a good one! I normally just roll off to deal with highs, or EQ the verb.

Yes, it is a great way to preserve the presence of the verb without the sibilance.

I love the C1 idea I never thought of using it as more of a high end compressor usually i use it as a custom de essor but now. now the ideas are all stolen and my own thank you Mike.

Jerry Mateo Hahaha, stolen indeed! The C1 is is a very powerful dynamics processor if you take a little time to look under the hood. An old one (in plugin years) but still a great one! Cheers! Mike

Michael White - Dave Pensado said he cannot work without c1 compressor, the side chain. now I understand why.

i´m a little in dire straits but considering taking your power compression course, just subscribed to your web site and see that all the courses are again in the menus, maybe you was in renovation since the date i´ve looked for or don´t know i was not able to saw them, resuming good oportunity seems all is there and at 50% off, probably see you soon in your web site, by the way i´m the user TrES-2b :-) seriouslly thanks, best teacher i´ve ever meet

Wouldn't that parallel compression and then filter introduce major phase problems? Or does that not matter on frequencies that high?
@ryanedwardmusic
@ryanedwardmusic 4 жыл бұрын
With parallel EQ/filtering, should you be using a linear phase EQ to avoid phase cancelling issues?
@mixingwithmike
@mixingwithmike 4 жыл бұрын
Ideally, yes. That said, most Exciters get their sound from NOT being phase coherent

I read somewhere that you should not put a de-esser on a whole track. Instead you should automate it to de-ess when needed.
@mixingwithmike
@mixingwithmike 8 жыл бұрын
+PoppyMusic If you set up the DeEsser right, it should only happen in a significant way when the esses occur. In more extreme cases, or where the esses are isolated to particular sections of a song, a little automation can be a tremendous help. I started out mixing songs in a single day, since that's all the budget with studio time would allow for. Today, with a DAW, you have to decide whether you want to spend hours automating esses out of your vocal tracks and if the money you are receiving for the gig justifies the time spent. Work smarter, rather than harder. Place the deEsser after compression and before EQ in the chain and it should work consistently enough to avoid the need for automation. I love the purist mentality though! Cheers! Mike

it's really easy to pull all of this off when your vox are already studio quality...
@mixingwithmike
@mixingwithmike 9 жыл бұрын
+GODSON Official Music Hey GODSON, Yes, it certainly makes it easier, but does not mean you can't achieve similar results with a less than studio quality recording. Just means you have to do other work to bring it to a place where this technique can be used. Cheers! Mike
