The Lab Los Angeles is Mixmag and Smirnoff Sound Collective's weekly post-work unwind where we stream only the finest American and international DJs, direct from our Downtown LA office. Coming to us this week is the legendary DJ, producer and boss of Subliminal Records, Erick Morillo.
Morillo's legendary status as a producer extends far beyond the dance music world. He's gone platinum, continues to run the highly influential imprint Subliminal Records and has remixed everyone from Whitney Houston to Basement Jaxx, has collaborated with P.Diddy, Boy George and an ongoing list of others.
His comeback is proving him to be stronger than ever with an SLS Las Vegas residency and a recent move to LA to be a part of the fast-growing music scene the city has to offer. Big things ahead from Erick Morillo.

I'm musician for 15 years and know the difference between good songs and bad songs... that's what matters... Erick Morillo is a King and will have people all over the world that prefers Steve Angello (for me a bad producer, but I liked SHM because of Axwell) than him. It's not a problem from Brasil or USA or even Europe... bad choices happen in the entire earth...

I listen to house since 1987 and I have seen a lot, but EDM just mashes up all sounds and grooves and when ears and brains get bored by hearing the same over and over again they spit EDM out and move on. Leaving burned ground. Those who paved the path may even not earn a dime on their IP. But where is the boundary between house and EDM? Some create new sounds, mixes, clicks and cuts. Other only reshuffle existing stuff, creating perfect transitions, not creating any new material. So what is what? My impression: Erick Morillo creates new material, at least .
