i just read all the comments. If u are having problems with the format of this lesson, you are either not ready for it or u need to go back to some of his simpler lessons to get the feel of his teaching style. If you are a rather serious person, perhaps a different teacher will bring more effective results for you. Remember, he's teaching theory not how to play any particular song. I think it's great that he incorporates application with scale theory. It's nice to hear a particular scale in context. Great job Josh. Your refreshing, not sterile. Thanx.

Love your videos Josh! Some of the best tutorials on youtube. I like that you have fun, keep things upbeat and break things down in a way that makes the lesson easy to understand. It really helps.

Your a very good teacher. I've been having trouble people breaking down scales and putting them into terms. These just totally nails it on the head.

Thanks for the TABs they are really helpful if youre a bass beginner like me. It can be tricky to transpose the notes to the fingerboard if youre not used to it, so TABs do the job.

I love that Peavy bass. It looks thin but sturdy and the shape is wicked. When I was a teen in the 80's my first guitar was a Peavy Patriot. Wish I still had it.

If you view the major scale as the superset a mode is a derivative subset of that superset from which other subsets can be formed

What about learning the chordal notes first? GBDF all over the neck, then using the scale to add colour? Why is the emphasis all about the scale when really it should be about learning the intervals of the chordal notes?

Question: Why couldn't I say that the main groove, which you play in this video, is in the major scale, and he moves about to the myxolydian when the song transitions?

Your tutorials are excellent but there's something I haven't yet been able to find out. I'm a total learner on bass and I can't understand the reason for all these different types of scale - what are they for, how do you recognise when to use them, are they of real use to know, or are they just patterns that might work in certain instances, is there a certain type of music where you'd use a certain type of scale - maybe you could make your own up at the time? Please explain what they're for, no one I know seems to know properly. Thank you GRH Manchester UK

They are only "sort of" scales. They are really all part of a particular major scale (in this case C). If a song is in the key of C, each mode ( a fancy word for playing the C scale, but starting and ending on a particular note) goes with a particular chord. Every note in the key of C has a corresponding four note chord. To be honest, the easy way to learn all of this is to watch his video The Beast and do that exercise. I personally am working on one key per month and find it challenging, but really really fun! Also, write out every note in a key and construct four note chords using those notes (1st, 3rd, 5th and 7th), starting on each note in the key (C would be C E G A, D would be D F G C, etc). This will help you see how it all fits together and understand chords which is really all we play, just not at the same time like guitarists. Remember you only use the notes in the key. These two things together have FINALLY gotten me to understand some music theory. Also, listen to blues and jazz. Even if you don't like them, they are very important musically.

scales are a tool you can use for a few different things. I use scales as a base for creating my own music and also as a reference point when trying to play with other musicians in a live setting or "jamming out".

Not much. Back when I made this video I was just running out of the amp and picking up the sound with my iPhone, lol! More recent videos I'm going bass -> audio interface (Audient iD14) -> Logic with a little compression and EQ.
