Mixtape Masters: Making a DJ Mix in Ableton Live

It goes without saying that anyone who considers themselves a DJ should be able to do live mixes. However, using a digital audio workstation (DAW) to make them can be useful in certain situations, like when you're on the road or want to add production value. You hit both nails on the head. I did a mix with my turntables of all different instrumentals and then loaded it into ableton live. I then added acapellas, drops and scratches. I even took out the rap part of one of the R&B acapellas and added a different artist..I was able to adjust my volumes, add EQ and also effects...I've been using ableton live for over 20 years thanks to Dj Jazzy Jeff. You can also record live from whatever decks you use. I use my v7's and my protools interface box to record. You can do it track by track like I do or just hit record and record on just one track. Multitracking to me is best because you can go back after you're done and take out, change or tweak things like effects or volumes.

Ableton makes is user friendly and better with warping vocals than Logic. I agree, if you need to make a mix, Ableton is the way to go!

Many missing steps in this video and quite useless. For example - how do you do fadeouts? How to use the envelope? These uncomplete tutorials are sometimes just wasting time :( I was searching for it for two hours...

Very useful video for a basic mix. If you want fade outs you can google for how to make fade outs lol

For fadeouts and envelopes, just watch another tutorial, as they are the basics of using any daw for that matter. Without knowing basics it's always confusing. As for this tutorial it's perfect for those who already know how to do all the above basics already. Great content.

Set the tempo on the Master channel, you can automate it.
