The speed of his decision making is astonishing! What he did in 6 minutes would take me hours of trial and error. I believe it all comes down to the philosophy that he has an absolute vision of what he wants and he already know how to achieve it. I'm always curious as to the artist's take on his decisions or if they just trust his judgment, and just let him do his job.

James Cater this is still likely how he works. He’s a master. I actually studied audio engineering under Drew Mazurek (spelling) a decade ago and he was like this. He could spot and fix trouble spots in a mix in seconds. I learned a lot. Biggest most impactful thing he taught me was to compress the living shit out of the overheads for a huge snare sound. Tight drums brings the whole mix together.

In my humble opinion, the most important thing we should notice and ideally - remember - is how Chris always has an idea before starting to make his moves. He knows what he wants to hear there, and that's, of course, experience and years of mixing, but I think it's a priceless idea! It doesn't matter where in your mixing-game you are right now, try it and just simply tell yourself "Hm, let's go for a clean/bright/boomy/snappy/saturated/distorted sound with delay/reverb/etc." (Or whatever it is you call the sounds you hear). Then just go for it! It doesn't matter how it will turn out in the end. If you accomplished what you were looking for, then it's points for you, don't overthink it and go rough and trust your ears and instinct! If you kinda like some chain you made, save or remember it! Use it more often - with time you'll elaborate on this idea and refine with experience you gathered along the way. Perhaps it could become an unique tool in your arsenal.

@BenRicoMusic

Hearing the source sounds would be great. I'm pretty sure CLA doesn't hear raw files that often. You can bet that his team/assistants are cleaning things up, like edits, comping, grouping tracks and setting up his Pro Tools session before he hears it. I genuinely believe in mixing fast and trusting instincts along the way. The only way for that to happen is to have that session mix prepped, and ready for the person mixing it. *** Oh, btw, I believe there's a Muse Documentary for "The 2nd Law" album. It's a fun watch for any Muse fans, or aspiring engineers to learn something.

Its amazing how he takes the raw sound (which is great to begin with, I mean its muse, come on) and makes it into what you hear on the record. I would love to see just how the heck they take that studio sound and translate it to the live shows. All Musers know they dont use tracks, except for orchestra, yet they always sound so good even on stage. The tremelo of Matt's voice paired with his screeching guitars, the driving force that is Dominic Howard's drums, and the formidable bass lines of Chris (insert impossibly pronounced last name here). They are 4 very distinct sounds all put together, and somehow this guy makes them perfect, and somehow someone else is able to replicate that. Amazing

Assuming I'm not the only person who is mindblown by how much expertise and physical equipment (an entire room full!) is required to make what is essentially a digital file? It's weird that the industry has changed so dramatically and become so throwaway, yet we're still using techniques/equipment from the proper good old days. P.s: I'm glad this discipline still exists, and never once assumed that we'd gotten to the point that it was just "kid with Garage Band on his Macbook mixing shit", but I'm still puzzled as to why a room-sized, physical fader still exists. Already seems anachronistic.

Because analog hardware adds subtle harmonic distortion to sound as it passes through its tubes, transformers, and optical components. That harmonic distortion is usually pleasing to us and helps with perceived imaging in the 3-D sound field. Only within the past few years have personal computers become powerful enough to run plugins that passably emulate that distortion, and they are getting better all the time, but they still don't sound like the real thing.

@Adam Alake no. There's a million guitar tracks playing at the same time in the album versions. Live, it's just one guitar, matt n his effects. But due the atmosphere of a live gig, nobody cares about the lack of these kind of stuff. If you do, live gigs aren't for you.

Little scary. I sat down last night with my gutair and bass determined to try and match Muse's tone as closely as possible. Then this shows up in my recommendations. Google knows too much. Anyway, now I understand why I failed miserably to match their tone. Watching this is akin to watching someone play Paganini. It feels effortless and virtuosic. Awesome.

CLA is to mixing what Tommy Emmanuel is to playing guitar. The dude is so good AND makes it look easy. I think I could do 1,000 mixes and they still wouldn't touch what CLA is able to pull out of the raw audio. His confidence is impressive to watch. No bullshit. Listens for 2 seconds and makes a decision.

199k u$S vs Jimmy Hendrix and a Marshall.

There is a little more sound going on here then the typical Jimi Hendrix song. All these guitar tracks simply mic/recorded through a Marshall amp would sound like ass. All the individual sounds of each track would get drowned out by the mix as a whole. Jimi's sound was great for the 60's, but that type of recording quality doesn't work very well anymore....(Unless you play black metal or stoner rock haha)

You've picked a bad example; Hendrix was a studio pioneer. He built Electric Lady Studios in New York, and pioneered studio effects like ADT, flanging, backwards delay; even using one of the first 16 track machines in existence to develop his lush, multi-faceted sounds. Studio engineers like Eddie Kramer became legends because of the work they did with Hendrix, as did people like Roger Mayer, who built many of his outboard effects. Have a read of this article: www.soundonsound.com/techniques/classic-tracks-jimi-hendrix-experience-all-along-watchtower From the article: "...highly innovative use of flanging, chorusing, looping and backwards tapes to realise the sonic vision inside Jimi Hendrix's head. As a result, the studio itself became yet another of the artist's instruments, plied like his guitars to mould sounds in his unique, groundbreaking style."

It´s a saying. People forget how to play and start thinking technology as a way of doing it. You can´t be, as another example, Steve Gadd having a 5k Yamaha drums kit and 40 hours of editing by track. You just have to be Steve Gadd.

The guys in Muse can really play though. I saw them live last year as part of their Drones tour; absolutely insane musicianship across the board. Even Brian May, who is clearly an influence on the track being mixed in the video, said of them; “They are extraordinary musicians. Real virtuosos - much more than I am." Not a bad endorsement to have! I wish I could play like Matt Bellamy...

Watch your step! Waves is fucking with you! You get a 50% offer and buy. 4 days later the same product costs 20% less! If you ask why Waves does this, you will be treated like a stupid person. Over the years, we've bought Waves products worth over $10,000 and recommend them to friends. We will never do that again and we advise everyone to watch out if they buy from Waves. There are now better companies like IZotope or Plugin Alliance! Don't let Waves fool you! They are not worth a cent!!

I'd really like to hear the unaltered guitar sounds in the mix and then A/B the changes he made to them while the song is playing. That will really tell you how much of a difference this sweetening does. As is, I can't really tell if what he does makes that much of a difference with all the other instruments playing.
