🇬🇧 Will it “bottleneck”? E5-2620 V3, E5-2678 V3, i7-8700k | GTX 1660S, GTX 1080 Ti, RTX 2080 Ti

This time I have decided to figure out which GPU should be paired with which CPU. For this test, I have picked three CPUs, three GPUs, 9 games with 1080p and 1440p screen resolution.
CPUs:
- Intel Xeon E5-2620 V3, 6 cores, 12 threads, 3.2 GHz on all cores with unlocked turbo boost.
- Intel Xeon E5-2678 V3, 12 cores, 24 threads, 3.3 GHz on all cores with unlocked turbo boost.
- Intel Core i7-8700k, 6 cores, 12 threads, turbo boost frequency up to 4.7 GHz.
GPUs:
- Huananzhi Nvidia GTX 1660 Super, 6 GB vRAM.

Do you think it's worth upgrading an i5 3570 to an E5 2678 v3 (just because it's the most powerful one that accepts my 32GB DDR3)? I'm just concerned about its performance with emulators (Dolphin, PCSX2, Cemu mostly) as the turbo core frequency is quite slower (3.3 vs 3.8Ghz). It would be really cool if you could do a video like this one about emulation with the most demanding/well-known emulators: Dolphin, PCSX2, Cemu, Citra, PPSSPP, RPCS3, Xenia, Yuzu, Parallel 64... Just an idea.

Hello. Do you think it's worth to upgrade X58 X5660@4,5ghz paired with gtx 1070 to the e5 2678 v3 somewhere in the future for 1080p? Or replace GPU once again in the future with something like rtx 2060S or maybe rtx 3060 and then after some savings buy that x99 xeon? EDIT: okay I watched full video and you talk about gpus in the end. I think if I would play 1440p it would be simple that I should upgrade graphics card once again but for 1080p maybe the best will be to stay on this setup and wait till I won't be able run games in good framerates :D.

Thanks greatly for this and all your other work. It's quite hard to find reliable English benchmarks and tests of these older Xeons, especially benchmarks with turbo boost unlocked. And if you look in (US centric) forums, you tend to get people saying things like E5-2620 V2 is no good for gaming, and instead recommend a US$150 CPU! They don't seem to understand if someone is looking into a motherboard+RAM+CPU for under US$200, a US$150 CPU stretches the budget a lot. This benchmarks seem to confirm my suspicion. For most people, you probably don't have to worry about bottlenecks. If you're looking at the E5 2520 v3 you're maybe planning to spend at most US$200 for the CPU+RAM+motherboard (if you need to buy all). In that case, you'll perhaps spend US$200 at most for the GPU (if you need to buy one). So you should be fine. If you stretch to US$300 for the GPU, you're starting to get into bottleneck territory, in that case you may want to spend the extra US$65 or so for the E5 2678 v3 (or something else). Such border cases are where this review is especially useful.

Chiming in to say I have to following X99 config and am VERY happy with it: Atermiter X99 D4 (AD12-B V1.0) flashed with your X99-F8 TU BIOS E5-2640v3 + Arctic Freezer 34 eSports Duo cooler 2x Atermiter 4GB DDR4 2400Mhz RAM (runs at 1866MHz) Gigabyte GeForce GTX 1070 Mini ITX OC 8GB 1TB Sabrent Rocket PCIe NVMe I've been playing Horizon Zero Dawn at 1440p/60fps with highest settings using the adaptive FPS feature and it looks and runs amazing. I highly recommend using the cheap board/CPU/RAM sets off Ali plus used GPUs off eBay, Craigslist, etc for cheap but still very capable gaming rigs.

The only thing I would change in this configuration is the amount of RAM. Many modern games run better with 16 GB of RAM, especially at 1440p. Other than that, you have got a perfectly balanced system.

Disable RTX :), Even the mighty RTX 2080 Ti has very little Ray Tracing capabilities, and RTX 2070 Super is a cut down version of it. For a true RTX experience you would have to wait for the RTX 3000 series.

I didn't do a detailed review for this particular board, but I have had it once. It's about as good as JingSha X99 D8, but supports DDR3 memory only. Unfortunately, max RAM speed is DDR3-1866, DDR3-2133 does not work.

For me the most informative channel around x79/99 device compare pro/contra, however, could you please do a power consumption comparison, especially with the 2678v3 this would be interesting compared to AMD Ryzen or even the 8700k due to the many threads. I am thinking of replacing my Intel Xeon processor E5-2650L v2 (10c/20t) +huananzhi x79-zd3 because WoL and sleepmode with unRAID does not work properly.... Does DDR4 RAM have a lot of performance advantages over DDR3 ECC/REG ?

Thank for the support. Power consumption figures I plan to add in the future. DDR4 doesn't have any performance advantage over DDR3 if running at the same speed. Sleep mode doesn't work on X99 boards with Turbo Boost Unlock either.

@@Miyconst Thanks for the important hint and for the future plans, at least the sleep-mode seems to work on my PlexHD with Xeon E5 2650V2. For my unRAID server I will continue to use the existing DDR3 REG/ECC, and then (unfortunately) shut down manually. NIC will be an Intel anyway, the RLT8111 has problems with WoL. Good that there are now ITX boards with x79/99, for a small "NAS" with FreeNAS in combination with the cheap server ECC RAM is a good thing : Does the sleep-mode work if the turbo is not activated?

@@Reflexiony Sleep mode work on many, but not all Chinese X99 boards, but only with full BIOS. Removing the 06F2 microcode from the BIOS disables sleep mode. In such configuration, some motherboards hang after waking up, others keep working fine, but without turbo unlock.

Hi. Which ES is that? Some of these Engineering Sample CPUs don't work on the Chinese X99 boards at all. Whether it's faster than i7-7700k is very hard to tell before I know the clock frequency of your ES CPU.

@@m1lanski379 okay.. 3.3 GHz is a good result. Looking at MSI AB, do you have some spikes when GPU load drops and CPU load rises? In general, if GPU stays loaded 95-99% - you need to upgrade the GPU, if GPU load drops below 90% from time to time - you need to upgrade CPU.

E5-2620 V2 is a useless CPU, so it's either V3 or upgrade. Take a look at the Xeon E3 options for LGA 1150 socket, many of them are significantly cheaper than the i7 with almost the same performance.

I did not disable anything in Windows. So, the answer is: software patches were in place, BIOS patches were missing, since Chinese X99 boards don't include those.

i have a x99 artemiter board a good one no problems with it so far its a newer version and the fixed a lot a bad things its a has a brown pcp with orange parts. with a intel xeon E5 2620 v3 , 2x4 gb ddr 4 working in dual channel . and a gtx 1660 super . i get in Fortnite epic setting 80 to 110, 70 fps low fps . witcher 3 ultra settings 110 fps 90, 80 fps low fps. GTA 5 all high settings 110 fps 100 and lowest 80 fps all games V.sync off . also recentley played The last renmant, on medium settings 120 fps average 130 high and 100 fps low its very stable and in medium that game looks great. i could perfectly played in high and would get 80 fps no problem.

@@Miyconst i do have a recorded video made as i am making a video testing my system on my Spanish speaking tech channel . afterwards i deleted fortnite, truley did not like this game at all . i used afterburner monitoring, it shows core speed and usage and temp. also used ram , gpu temp and of course FPS . i am not an experienced msi afterburner user so did the best i can to show all info i can. it does not show the type of cpu i used or the type of ram as you video do.

@@sajeelsafdar4532 Xeon E5-2678 V3 is an unofficial version of E5-2680 V3. It was made for Amazon as they had lots of DDR3 RAM available and demanded Intel to provide a good CPU with DDR3 memory support. If E5-2680 V3 supported, then E5-2678 V3 is also supported. Some software is not even able to recognize E5-2678 V3 and reports it as E5-2680 V3.

Yes but if you have good non-chinese X99 board you might want to buy 16XX v3 xeons to OC them. Theay are beasts in gaming.
