If you want too do overclocking without that you can give it a try with the 1650 v1 1650 v2 & 1650 v3 xeon all E5 16xx xeons should be unlocked starting from the 1650,1660,1680 some have pushed that V3 1650 too 5 ghz & air cooled you can push them fairly easily too 4.0 - 4.4 ghz its about 93 usd atm for the v3 xeon. There is a cheaper engineering sample but it does not have an unlocked multiplier but it has a 3.5 ghz turbo. Also this program is pretty old but try setting max multiplier via crystalcpuid on the turbo clock & see if you get anywhere with that, then you can setup a desktop shortcut too that clock speed.

The x99 platform aged very well, I'm still using my i7 5960x 4 years later and it handles every game I throw at it with ease. Despite that, It's a risky investment getting this platform now unless you're able to find a motherboard with good vrm's & overclocking features that isn't too expensive, as overclocking Haswell-E & Broadwell-E is pretty much a requirement to get the most out of them especially now that modern games are benefiting from more threads and faster cores. They also have a high tdp and run hot when pushed, so a good dual or triple rad CLC or air cooler such as the Corsair hydro series or Noctua NH-D15 are excellent options to start with.

I run a Ryzen 5 3600 as my main, but I've been looking at V3 E5's for a while as a server build in order to run some game servers and do video processing. There are a lot of decent X99 boards coming out of China. The T8 and TF for example. HOWEVER, because price/performance is so good, it's a little depressing that there isn't much variety in the dual socket category. Especially with dual X79 boards all over the place. There are like 3 or 4 that I see (well 1 or 2 as a couple of them are the same oem board with different branding.) The Jingsha for instance... Nice board but ONE 16X slot? And it's shared with the M.2? I know we're just getting into X99 territory, so I hope to see more capable dual sockets come along especially when the higher end V3's come down in price, AND we still have a whole line of V4's that may be within reach in a few years. Wouldn't a 22/44 4669v4 for under $100 be nice? ;-)

And there was no way to turn it off! It also broke digital audio, I use a modded realtek HD audio driver that enables DTS 5.1 and Dolby Live 5.1 (I soldered a wire to pin 48 of the realtek chip to use digital audio) and your BIOS unfortunately breaks digital audio for me. And last and most importantly, there was no more cool Machinist logo during POST, just the boring American Megatrends logo.... In the end I was able to remove the microcode update myself and create my own modded bios file which did work perfectly including preserving the cool Machinist Boot Logo and my spdif mod still works fine. Looking at Ali Express, it's still a tough sell against ryzen for the price considering the performance and platform. The single core performance is still pretty ordinary.
@mapesdhs5974 жыл бұрын
True for the v3s, much less so for the v2s because the RAM is so cheap, etc. that the price differential on a typical fixed budget is easily enough to afford a much better GPU, and that will be better for gaming. I've been doing my own tests with various mbs, XEONs, etc. We're talking about gaming here, single core performane really is no longer that relevant, we're aren't in the Intel quad-core annual yawn fest era anymore. :D Modern APIs, better OS thread handling and better game engines have moved the dependence away from IPC and high clocks, especially at 1440p. To summarise: if testing with the same GPU then there will be a differential (but much reduced at 1440p, and for budget gaming mostly irrelevant for the majority who aren't using high refresh displays). This though is testing without context; given the same fixed budget instead, for gaming there's a definite avantage with the XEONs in most cases. Not every game is like this of course, but the vast majority are. Frankly I've been amazed at what my sub-$10 2420 v2 is capable of compared to a 5GHz 2700K (same performance as a stock 6700K), eg. here's my FC5 data so far: www.sgidepot.co.uk/misc/farcry5.txt And note I was testing the XEONs with the Intel security mitigations active (I didn't realise until later).

@mattsmechanicalssi58334 жыл бұрын
@Bob Mule Well, I personally wouldn't run one of those boards anyways. A lot of features of the C6XX/X79/X99 chipsets on those boards have been removed. Some even remove memory channels and PCI-e lane access to the CPU. Add to that the terrible VRM's and no native UEFI BIOS, makes them a waste of money. Boards from Asus, EVGA, Gigabyte, etc, are a far better value in the end, despite their initial cost. If budget is a concern, then there are better options than the HEDT platforms, and something newer may just be a better value. I use HEDT because I require the PCI-e lanes. I'm still on X79, the EVGA X79 DARK, to be precise. The upgrades I have made over 7 years has been the CPU and GPU. My investment over that amount of time makes the initial costs worthwhile to me. Instead of having to buy an entirely new platform, I have had an upgrade path. The latest being a XEON E5-1680-V2, for $200CAD. It clocks to 4.7GHz all core 24/7, and is capable of keeping up with Ryzen 8 cores.
@mattsmechanicalssi58334 жыл бұрын
@Bob Mule Ebay is where I find mine. It just requires a lot of time looking, and even more waiting! LOL! And when you do find one, you sort of have to wait till the auction is almost over so as not to drive the price up. For X79, the best EVGA boards are the DARK and the Classified. There are 2 versions of the Classified (Can't remember the numbers off hand), and the one you want has two 8-pin EPS connectors. And of course there's the EVGA SR-X dual socket board for the E5-26XX-V1/V2 series. Run a pair of 2697-V2's and you have a24c/48t system. Pointless for the E5-16XX-V1/V2 series in the SR-X as they are single socket CPU's. But for single socket X79 boards, the E5-1680-V2 is the best chip for it. Just make sure you're running a custom loop, cause they can get hot! Mine pulls 250-290 watts under load at 4.7GHZ all core. For Asus X79's, one of the best is the ASUS P9X79-E WS. Make sure it is that one, as there is one with a similar name, but it doesn't have the PLX chips on board for PCI-e bifurcation. It is distinguishable by it's massive flat square chipset heatsink, and multiple heatpipe/fin assemblies. ( www.ebay.ca/itm/ASUS-P9X79-E-WS-LGA-2011-Intel-X79-SATA-6Gb-s-USB-3-0-SSI-CEB-Intel-Motherboard/123966314673 ) The Rampage IV is also a good board. For X99, the EVGA X99 Classified, and the Asus Rampage V are the ones to go for.

@@us7876 You can check Miyconst videos. He have some really nice videos on x99 CPUs. That said if you can afford an 1600 AF build it's better to do that in my opinion. The 1600 AF is a great CPU and all games will run without any issues for years to come and in the future when you need an upgrade you have a ton of options CPU-wise as long as you take a decent motherboard :) The x99 will come out somewhat cheaper, but it is an older platform which in my opinion isn't really that much of an issue since you are going to use it for few years and by the time you want to replace it we will have ddr5 and who knows what else. The major issue that most people worry is actually the motherboard or to be more precise how long it will last. At the end of the day these boards aren't made with the same quality that popular brands are and you don't have that local warranty.

I figure Xeons and second hand components are for 1080p gaming - not because it is limited to '1080p' but because of the price of a 'decent' monitor - If you can afford to spend $US500 on a monitor 'cheaping out' on low end hardware is less likely... Is that the thought of many people?

Just a quick suggestion, check out the workstation class of machines. These Xeon cpu's and 'server' memory also were used in workstations. And since it was HP, Lenovo or Dell who engineered them they are built like brick outhouses. I've just bought a HP Z420 workstation off e-Bay for $194. For my money I got a fully working machine with an E5-1650V2 3.5Ghz, 16GB of 1866 memory and a 500GB USB3 7200 Barracuda HDU all with a modern motherboard with SATA3, USB3, PCIX3. A 600W PSU. Alll I needed to do was add my Radeon RX580 and instant gaming machine for about $300. I also upgraded with a 500GB Barracuda SSD and a 2TB 7200 Barracuda HDU. The latest are rocking 256MB cache so they are pretty quick for a disk. Eventually I'd like to buy the E5-2687W V2 but they are in the $250 range right now but there's my upgrade path.

I'll give you "Thanks" again. It was Tech YES City that inspired me to research and build my Xeon Upgrade way back in early 2016. To this day... I am still using a Xeon E5-2658 v3 ES (12C/24T) with 32GB of DDR4. All of this with a new ASRock motherboard, EVO 212 CPU cooler and a newer SSD only set me back $520 US. That's pretty good for 2016. The Xeon alone only cost $170 US.

Got an easy upgrade path now :p
@jonspoonamore37214 жыл бұрын
@@techyescity That was my plan in 2016. Easy and cheap CPU upgrade next time around. I will never pay more than $200 US for a new or used CPU period. I've been keeping tabs on 20/22 core used Xeons for the past 18 months. But with the way the CPU War is progressing with AMD and Intel, it's looking like a used Ryzen and new motherboard will be a better upgrade than just a used Xeon alone. I suspect a used 3900X and new MB in 12+ months time will be between $300 and $400 US. I'll pay that price to get more than double my current computing performance. A used E5-2698 v4 ES is still about $300 US and will only give me about 30% more performance. I don't expect the pricing to drop much further on these extra high-end used Xeons. This is why I am currently watching for used Ryzens.

@@jdt3556 Hey John. The E5-2658 V3 only goes to DDR4-2133. The ASRock MB I bought went all the way to DDR4-3000. I ended up just using DDR4-2400. I'm not a modern-gamer. So RAM bandwidth is not too important to me. Do your homework/research before buying a used Xeon! I spent 3 months researching/deal-waiting on my 2016 build to get it down to the $500 US range. If I hadn't, the cost could have easily been over $800 US.

I grabbed a HP Z440 back in 2019 with a Quad Core Xeon (E5-16something v3 I think, cost me $180 for the entire PC), a GTX 1650 Super (Didn't come with the initial purchase, got it for $218 in 2020), 16GB RAM and a 1TB Seagate HDD. Then, in 2021 I upgraded to the 12 Core Intel Xeon E5-2690 v3 2.6ghz, a GTX 1070ti, a Samsung 500GB SSD, plus two external 500gb SSDs, and upgraded from the 1TB HDD to a 2TB HDD. And I spent a total of around $110 USD. The CPU was $77 from Ebay, the GPU was given to me, and the HDD/SSDs were lucky finds. I also just recently (This week, actually.) found an additional 4TB of HDD goodness and an 8TB Seagate Plus Hub, (which doesn't want to work so I'm still troubleshooting) for a total of around $30 USD. So all of that inlcuding my $60 USD Corsair Mouse and $60 USD HyperX RGB Keyboard and the Klipsch RB-61 II speakers with a Subwoofer from a Klipsch ProMedia 2.1 THX set (not using the smaller speakers that came with the ProMedia, which I got for $75 USD. The RB-61 II's I got for $40 USD) and the Acer Predator XB273 monitor (which I got for $55 USD) puts me right at $800 USD for an entire set up which would cost anywhere from $250-$500 USD more for the same or an equivalent setup (if you know how to shop) and, even though I managed to get an MSI Sword 15 with a RTX 3050ti, 8GB RAM and 500GB SSD(Normally a $1,200 USD laptop that I got for $500 USD), I still am happier with my desktop. I'm not trying to brag, but keep an eye out for the path less trave... er, the CPU less overclocked when you're searching for upgrades or a new rig all together. Now if only I could find a cheap RTX 2090 or 2080ti....

Sadly the E7 xeons require a c602j chipset Mobo to run (to the best of my knowledge). This greatly reduces the options and all are pretty high dollar. A shame too because you can get some serious muscle in that lineup in the used market. Just thought I would throw that out there for folks considering. Also LGA2011 socket specs are about as clear as mud. The whole LGA2011-1 through -3 is a pain in the ass to find documentation on and get confirmation of compatibility.
