Sir William has been molting about a week now. I thought I would give you all a glimpse into what he looks like during this time. He molts just once a year, but its not supposed to happen until June! It's only March! PLEASE join our parrot family on Instagram! @Parrot_Sir_William

holy crap...! I can't take my eyes off those pins! Ive NEVER seen such an intense growth pattern--I mean his feathers are like those of a baby bird who is feathering out for the very first time! So, are you saying that this guys lost ALL his head feathers at once...? In other words, he was bald for a period??? This seems so atypical. Isn't it the worst possible time for him to have to endure a beak trim at the vet, btw? Since he's presently so stressed from this massive moult...?

@MizzysParrots
@MizzysParrots 6 жыл бұрын
Hi thanks for your comment! Yes that is ok - this is how I have to preen my Queenie. She only lets me break the tips and then if I get closer to the roots she gets upset. They WILL break off eventually on their own or with help from toys/cages as the bird scratches itself. If you can get deeper than the tips, do so. If not, it's fine! It will just take a little longer thats all but yes they will eventually flake off!!!

The more time you spend with him the more he will trust you being "just part of the flock". Not just time but quality time, little steps, the sooner the better! My baby "Bob" will even nap with me afternoons, we play eye games all the time to see who falls asleep first???? Lol. Birds are curious and inquisitive, a great training tool. Hi I have a question so my budgie is going thru a moult right now and we had an accident an accidentally pulled out his tail feathers, almost everything is gone I checked no blood no swelling he’s good just like before however does this mean that his tail will begin to grow next moult since he’s already half way thru this one? Thanks and please don’t violate me about his tail it was a complete accident and I feel so bad but on the brighter side it could’ve been so much worse!

You explained your parrot usually molts in June, but seeing as you filmed him in March and he's molting, you believe his body got confused bc of an injury to his tail feather, hence the early molting. Does that mean he'll molt again in June, yes or no? Or, is he going to molt in June, 2024? Please explain if you can. Thank you.

Quick question for you. What happens if you pick at the molting feathers? I did that with my bird, and she just bit me.
@MizzysParrots
@MizzysParrots 6 жыл бұрын
Ciara Obrien if the feathers aren't ready, you can cause damage to the roots and extreme discomfort for the bird. If your bird wont allow you to preen them, then they must not be ready OR the bird simply does not like that attention. It happens! If ever your really concerned about your birds feathers, see a vet asap!! Another way for birds to preen without help from humans is toys. They can rub their new feathers on toys and break them open and a lot of birds prefer that because they are in control

@MizzysParrots 6 жыл бұрын
Marilyn Simmons Thanks for your comment! I don't take him to the vet for molting. He is seen by a vet regularly because of his overgrown beak. He has an infection causing it to grow like crazy. I always preen him myself, I did not show that in this video because I had no clue people would enjoy watching that!!! This was mainly a video to show up close what it looks like. And then i started receiving comments asking me to show me preening him so from now on I will add those videos! I did one recently.

everyday craft 30 They normally can get them off themselves, however certain ones are hard to reach and you should help them. Its always a good idea to help them anyway regardless. In the wild, birds rely on other birds to help them preen. Domesticated birds dont always have that and they need some help from you!!!

Only if they aren't ready to break :) dark grey means they arent ready and will be painful to touch. Light grey means they need to break open. In the wild, parrots preen each other to get rid of their pins. Domesticated parrots need the help of their owner, or another bird in the home. Sometimes even toys help them to break open! My sir william here LOVES his pin head being scratched and massaged.
