Preening My Parrot | Sir William Gets a Massage | SOOTHING VIDEO

You asked for it - here it is :) Sir William being preened and massaged! *He would not sit long enough for me to break open each one and since they were so close to his nose, it was making him upset when I touched the roots. I will make another preening video this coming summer when he goes through his major molt!*

See my reply to jar parz. Birds, especially parrots, love the human touch and interaction! My parrots love the hair dryer after a good soaking bath! Your brushing feels good to them as long as you don't brush the pin in any direction other than the one in which it is growing. They also recognize tone and feeling in your voice, so always be loving, they will reward you in kind!

some good advice for preening birds if their pin feathers are ready but still sensitive: giving them a little spritz with warm water helps to loosen the shells, and gently brushing them with a clean mascara brush or toothbrush seems to work well to break the pins away while being more gentle than human fingers! :)

that is actually the soft casing that has the new feathers in them. They slowly break off afterwards when the bird picks at them with their beak and talons.

A nice shower or bath, I use my tub and sprayer nozzle. It always eases a molt! He may have lost feathers there all at once? He clearly loves that! Rio my 32 y/o B&G macaw will close her eyes and purr, that characteristic macaw purr! After a bath they come unglued this time of year. Parrots molt twice a year spring into summer and fall into winter. They typically molt a few feathers here and another there but not all at once. I notice my birds start the body feather molt first, spreading to head and neck while a few tail and wing feathers come out a a time. Water helps facilitate the keratin sheath removal once the pin feathers emerge and grow to length and size they will flake off easily. It’s a good bonding ritual you can have with your bird when you build trust.

Perhaps you need to use a tweezer to squeeze each one of these pin feathers so the protective shell crumbles out, leaving a new feather. This way, it is much safer for the parrot as well.

This sort of thing is why it's a good idea to have more than one bird if you keep parrots, so they can preen each other as they would in the wild. Otherwise their pinfeathers can become a problem for them.

Marilyn Simmons it seems like all birds are different. Sir William has always had one big molt each year and nothing more. Meanwhile, my other birds molt throughout the whole year, just a few feathers at at a time so its barely noticeable. Sir William here had a vet visit a few years ago while he was molting and the vet said all his feathers were healthy so I'm not worried :)

Those pins just do not seem ready. I myself would have waited. I believe the pin coatings would have crumbled apart MUCH more readily if they were truly ready and also that he would very likely sit still for--if not demand--that you remove every single one instead of shying away from your rubbing like he did. I'm sincerely sorry if I hurt your feelings or if I sound like a total jerk BUT I just don't believe those are really ready.

These feathers were ready. They were ALL the same shade of light gray. I wait until there are no more dark gray spots. He was cooperating very well. He was only upset because he doesn't like it when I get that close to his nose. I also dont have sharp or long nails which makes it much harder to break them.

Even when pin feathers are ready, they can still be very sensitive to some birds. Even though he was shying away a little bit, he wasn't biting or showing any signs of extreme discomfort, and kept tilting his head back to ask for more scritches. Some birds just don't respond well to certain areas of their heads or faces, or to human fingers. And that's okay! all birds are different and react differently

My parrotlet had two pin feathers on the head very close to her eye.. i managed to preen the majority of them but i cant get to the base of it... the base still has this skin left... will preening most of it do? or is it absolute necessity to get it from the base?

It's better to stay away from the base of pin feathers it can really hurt the bird sometimes. The base will eventually dry and fall off

Hey I have a question that I’m hoping you can answer. I have a Quaker parrot that refuses to let me preen him, whenever I try to he goes to bite me. Do you have any advice on what I should do?

Best route would be to visit a vet but call beforehand. Some vets are more familiar with birds than others but they should be able to help you either way. Otherwise I recommend holding him securely without harming him, in a position where he can't snap at you.

Hi, I am just seeing this comment now, sorry! Some birds simply do not wish to be preened by humans. This is normal and nothing wrong with it. If he really is not letting you help, then don't. You can misuse your trust with your bird and never get it back! Toys help A LOT. Birds rub against them to scratch. The feathers will break off eventually, if they don't get preened they will just weaken over time when the feather inside grows stronger so they will crack and flake off. I would just make sure he always has toys available and don't force him to let you preen him!

you don't remove them. they are essentially new growing feathers and once the coating is dry and flaky, just help to scratch it off so that the feather can grow
