For me there's plenty of TV doc's that covers all the controversy, so I didn't go to this musical looking for that, as I knew it was set in 1992. I think Myles Frost is sensational as MJ, and I was almost equally impressed byt Ashley Zhangazha as MJ's dad and Rob. The way he just switches between 2 characters on the spot, was very cool to watch. The whole set design is one of the best I've seen - I still can't get over the whole NY set appearing out of nowhere. The speed which the sets change is also impressive and the fact that the band was just is moved off and on stage was done really smoothly as well. All the song performances and choreography was spot on - the rehearsal room is a nice way to bring these together. I think his childhood was covered in a way that made sense, via that interview. Is it perhaps more of a concert than an actual story? Yes, but I don't watch jukebox musicals for intricate plots. Plenty of other shows do that.

The cast is pretty good and yes - some elements of the show were spectacular. Definitely the one for fans to enjoy and hear these songs performed by some pretty incredible actors. I wasn’t suggesting they should’ve covered the controversy at length just that the story felt very controlled, keeping the viewer on the surface rather than letting them in. But good entertainment nonetheless.

Hi Kristina, I went to see MJ The Musical a few months ago and I thought the production was superb Myles Frost’s performance was truly remarkable the way he sang, danced, and captured MJ’s mannerism and his speaking voice was incredible, the nearest to actually seeing Michael Jackson in real life. The musical numbers were spectacular especially Thriller, however, I do agree that the show does gloss over the controversy surrounding his life with only flash backs to his childhood. But that aside it is a wonderful celebration of his music and that’s what the vast majority of the audience are going to see the show. I do think that Tina is the best of the jukebox musicals as that production covers more of the dark side of her life as well as the successes and celebration of her music.

Myles Frost is incredible! 100% agree! The closest we can get to experiencing MJ live again! And for so many fans this will be an amazing night out full of entertainment. Couldn’t agree more in regards to Tina - that is the ultimate jukebox musical about the artist’s life that feels so real, vulnerable and powerful at the same time. One of my favourites!

If I simply wanted fun I’d do Mamma Mia…..for music and a great story Tina…..and I was surprised/impressed with Jersey Boys (or for another jukebox musical “Just for One Day”)…..MJ never really intrigued me. The performers are no doubt brilliant but just more interested in other shows. (Off to the Young Vic this Saturday…..curious to see a show I have not much knowledge of)

We are spoiled for choice! But yes, probably not my favourite either. Hope Young Vic’s good on Saturday! ☺️

I left at intermission for this one, the audience were terribly, so badly behaved, I think you get people who don't usually go to the theatre come to something like this. The dialogue was really bad between songs, I really struggled to stay interested. It does sound the second half was maybe better for some big numbers.

Oh no! Sorry to hear that. Luckily that wasn’t the case when I went to see it but have heard someone else complain about audiences being loud. The second act was defo stronger but I totally see what you are talking about.

MJ was found and proven innocent. You wanted a court room musicals where it ends with MJ being found and proven innocent? haha that would piss u haters even more. Dont worry the MJ biopic coming out april next year will potray MJ as a beautiful innocent soul and those accusers as the criminals they are. So i look forward of more crying from you 😂

I wasn't going to see it and honestly, even after your review, I still don't think I want to see it. I've heard great things about Frost's amazing performance, but excellent mimicry doesn't necessarily make it interesting. I alway loved Fawlty Towers , couldn't wait to see the play. The actor playing Fawlty / John Cleese is uncannily perfect, and the script was based on classic episodes, but it still bored the pants off of me. And finally the image of Jackson is just so tarnished now, it would interfere with my enjoyment of the show.

I totally share your sentiment. I felt borderline guilty for going to see the show and just the absence of anything that would remotely acknowledge the elephant in the room felt like an even bigger let down. It’s interesting to see tho that the show is going on tour and getting bigger so it clearly suggests that there are people who enjoy it for what it is.
