Jeremy Lin got banned from the NBA but why? #NBA
Linsanity was born, the most talked about celebrity in sports. But now Lin is out of the NBA playing in Taiwan because even though he wants to play in the NBA, he has been black listed, banned. After winning the chip with Toronto in 2019, Lin said he feels the “NBA has kind of given up on me,” What really happened to Jeremy Lin?
Lin was chosen California's player of the year in 2006 when he led his Palo Alto High School team to a state championship... but he didn’t get any athletic scholarship. Lin said, "Well, the obvious thing in my mind is that I was Asian American which, you know, is a whole different issue but I think that was a barrier."
And at Harvard University, he heard more racist slurs than in the NBA, one being “Hey! Can you even see the scoreboard with those eyes?” but the NBA would be worse for different reasons.
Lin didn’t get drafted but that didn’t stop him from overcoming his first obstacle, getting into the NBA. In 2010, he got on the Mavericks summer league and gave number 1 pick John Wall the work, 11 4th quarter points. Lin was a crowd favorite.
And Lin ran with it. Ultimately signed with the Warriors, but even with this excitement, Lin wouldn’t really get much of a chance. 29 games, 9.8 minutes a game behind a young Stephen Curry and Monta Ellis. He was more playing in the NBA D-league and then got waived.
He signed with the Rockets, but got waived again before the next season started. The Knicks gave him a shot in 2011, but again, more garbage time minutes, no responsibility. That was problem #2, no one had faith in Lin.
In his own words, “That was going to be it for me. My agent had actually called me before the game and said, ‘If you don’t play well, tonight will probably be your last game in the NBA.’ …
On January 28, 2012, the Knicks would lose, fail to reach 90 points for the 5th time in 7 games. Lin played 20 minutes, scoring 9 points and 6 assists and maybe that was enough because coach Mike D’Antoni looked for a spark and on February 4th, he would go to Lin off the bench in the first quarter, and by the second, Lin was balling out. He ended the game with 25 points, 7 assists, 5 rebounds in a win. The next game, he dropped 28 points and 8 assists in another win. Dunking on the Wizards, playing on par with John Wall, and another win.
The Knicks would play the Lakers, and well Lin comes out firing, jumper after jumper, including the spin layup and Kobe was cooking Shumpert, you know the iconic. While Kobe was going off in the 4th quarter, Lin was right there with him and the crowd was going crazy. I remember watching this live and just losing my mind as my two favorite teams just going at it. Kobe ended the game with 34 points 10 boards, Lin with 38 points, 7 assists, and the win. Kobe knew who Lin was after this game and would eventually become teammates but we’ll get there. Lin still had an iconic game winner 2 games later against Toronto, the Knicks won 6 in a row.
But when Carmelo came back from injury was when the same problems resurfaced. Lin was a restricted free agent but the Knicks owner James Dolan said they would match up any offer up to a billion dollars.
In fact, Lin wanted to stay with the Knicks but they never even offered him a contract.
Two years later, the Rockets would trade Lin in a salary dump to the Lakers. Lin got his opportunity to play alongside Kobe. He then played a season for the Hornets in which he got solid minutes. ************************It was enough to sign a 3 year $36 million deal with the Nets, and it was exciting. But next season, Lin would rupture his patella tendon and be out for the season.
Now it’s been four years since Lin was seen in an NBA uniform... but why? But all this is caused by Problem #3, racism which is related to the dark secret I’m about to walk you through because to Lin, it caused his rock bottom.
You might think that with Lin’s injury history, maybe there’s some sort of justification, especially with hamstring issues and knee tears, but he played 74 games in last recent season. So, he got signed to the Warriors' G-League team for the 2020 season and proved once again that he could hoop at the next level, averaging 19.8 points, 3.2 rebounds and 6.4 assists with the Santa Cruz Warriors, ****literally one of the best players in the G-League.
We’ve heard xenophobic comments throughout the past couple years. Statements that Giannis could never be the face of the league because no one can pronounce his name, calling Jokic a tub of lard. The NBA has an obsession for home grown athletes.
So while Linsanity was perhaps one of the best basketball stories in this century, Jeremy Lin became another heartbreaking story. In 2021, Lin said his chase back to the NBA was officially over and said "When I add all of that up, I would say race has a role to play in that, I just don't know how big. But, you know, my gut is that race definitely has a role to play.”

Watching this breaks my heart so bad. Idk if Jeremy Lin will ever see this comment, but as a little black boy growing up you were my favorite player when I was in highschool. I wanted to be like you, not like Mike or Kobe. You deserved better man. Edit : (since some of you are mentally handicapped) I’m not denying the greatness of MJ or Kobe they are the best of the best and some of my favorite players. I’m simply saying I looked up to J-Lin and respected and admired his journey from the mud to the top. He literally had to fight 10x as hard as everyone else for each shitty little opportunity he got…. Was Linsanity short lived? Yes… do we know what could have been? No… But he 100% deserved the money and partial fame he got because like Kobe Bryant said about Jeremy himself, he likely always had that great talent and potential, it was just never recognized and overlooked. 💯

As an Asian and a Warriors fan, I was so freaking pissed that they didn't. He could have helped the bench that year, he played lights out in the G-league and was better than half of the roster. I didn't get it at all, it made sense from a basketball stand point and with the large Asian community in the Bay, made sense from a business stand point. It's just unfortunate, the NBA is very racist against Asians and that hurt him a lot.

Yet a junior dev who is white is given a silver spoon all the way through. This is because bosses who are white see themselves in a white junior dev. The Amount of blatant flagrant fouls that were not called during the tail end of Linsanity that lead to his season ending injury would tell you that the most of all NBA players wanted him gone. Heck, when J. Lin as a Rocket faced off against Carmelo Anthony's Knicks after he came back from the injury, C. Anthony blatantly smacked J. Lin's face multiple times while guarding him without any calls... Worst of all, he was to play with the certified Ball Hogs in C. Anthony, Hardee's and Kobe to stunt his growth of his game point of no return.

John Madden said of the NFL, it's a hard league to make and hard league to stay in. Madden knew of what he spoke, He had been a Hall of Fame coach and knew about the players who were down roster as well as the stars. The same is true of all the big four pro leagues and leagues everywhere. Lin played nine years in the NBA, long enough to prove himself. Today, he is 36 years old and has a reported net worth of $36 million. He is from Palo Alto, an epicenter of Sillcon Valley, I realize, $36 mil is just pin money around there. Chinese opinion does matter, they do consume our content, but their feelings don't override the body of work, and furthermore this is an American sport so we dictate the culture.they have their own league and set of inspiration which is exactly why Yao Ming runs the Sharks. So instead they bring him into their minor league & then not even call him up. Who places a decade-long veteran into the minor league? And not just any player, but one who hyped up the world to watch a sport that they would not have watched that much at all. A player needs not only metrics & stats, but also motivation & inspiration, 2 unmeasurable things, to be able to play well again. Do you think Lin would take a league minimum contract to come off the bench? I'd guess that it came down to younger, more stable, and less expensive talent as you describe. At this point in his career, Lin has no upside potential. He'd be a cog. Also, I don't know if his defense was good or bad, but poor or below average defense could be a reason that teams passed on him.

@@acevan98at his role and position with his skill set and level of talent age is very much the problem. Non superstars that play into their golden years are usually specialists that can still bring a mismatch against certain schemes or players. Not a knock at him or his talent but Jeremy is not that guy. Every NBA team would rather take a risk on a high ceiling younger guard that may still make a leap in development. A potential high value low cost younger player is just much more enticing for a franchise than Lin. Shitty for him but that is just the way it is.

Jeremy Lin played in a league in Taiwan last season which was a huge phenomenal. He led a team with a record of two wins and seventeen losses to an eight-game winning streak and almost made it to the playoffs, we called it Linsanity 2.0 here... people here were crazy about him, treating him like a king. every game and his jersey were sold out. and fans lined up for his autographs outside the court for hours. in July, He said that he knew he wouldn't be able to be back in NBA, and he would like to devote one more year for a meaningful season to a special team. no matter in Taiwan or China. now every Taiwanese team brings a truck with tons of money at his door. However, As a Taiwanese, I do truly wish he can be back in the NBA again, I know that place is the place that could really make him happy.

Thanks for putting this piece together. It's a must watch. JL's awesome 38-pt. game against the Lakers 2-10-12 occurred on my birthday so there's a fond memory there as a lifelong b-ball fan. But I was hooked the weeks before that when without Melo (who never came close to a 7-game winning streak as the centerpiece of the failing NYK) and A. Stoudemire, when the Knicks went off with Lin leading the way. The racist component in his story is nothing but tragic. Not 'looking the part' hits home for me in my field, so there's another connector. But the main thing on a deep psychological level is the fact that he had to deal as second fiddle esp. with Anthony and Harden, and maybe a bit with Kobe...and they were all at least slightly jealous of Lin for no other reason than his superior humility and intelligence + allegiance to his personal religious ethic.... which doesn't mean much to the profit-centered bling-heavy 'is he brandable?' corporate world, where pure humanity is about #47 on the list of desired traits. Lin has made bank even in his NBA exile, so he's not struggling as far as lifestyle...but I have a feeling we are not finished seeing something amazing from him...the constant personal rejection has created an internal beast that still has something to say and do, and will be released as a positive. I believe in this man and his power of overcoming all the shots to his gut with something magnificent. He deserves apologies from a lot of people.

It’s funny how you mention racism and yet you use codified racist language in this long-winded attempt to revise lin’s true historical impact on the league. “Bling-heavy”? “Superior-intelligence”? We will let that slide, because the facts will easily irradiate your distorted sentiments. Lin’s first season: 10mpg, 2.6ppg, 38%fg, 20%3pt, In more than a quarter of the seasons worth of games played. The warriors do what any sensible organization would do with a young player and send him to the D-league. That’s not racism that is an opportunity. The following season, Lin has a 25-30 game span of greatness that earns him a 3-year 25 million in Houston the following hear. The same 35 game stretch that fans like yourself cling to for dear life. The facts are this: he averaged 14ppg 6assists and almost 4 turnovers a game (3.6). Serviceable, but nothing to ride home with. Opportunity number 2. Lin plays 82 games the first season with Rockets and averages 13ppg, 6asts, and 2.9 TOS Respectively, he ranked in the 23rd percentile in both ppg and asts, but ranked in the top 70th percentile in turnovers. I am not even going to mention his lack of defense because even super fans know how abysmal of a defender Lin was. Clearly his “superior intelligence” didn’t equate to a solid assist-to-turnover ratio, but the rockets gave Lin another opportunity the following season. With injury, terrible decision making along with the rise of James Hardens playmaking ability, Lin saw another significant dip in Ppg, asts, but his turnovers remained around the same at 2.5 per game. Finishing his career in Houston in the bottom percentile for starters in points, assists, efficiency, but finishing high in turnovers, among his peers. I can continue, but the trend remains the same: his scoring output (which was what Lin was known for) just did not merit him getting the minutes that fan boys like yourself though he deserved. He was an unreliable play maker, fickle on defense, and was injury prone. These are all factors that have plagued many players regardless of race, but I understand… when you are a stan you tend to disregard the facts and pull at any straw that is within arm’s reach. Lin has “microwave- ability” so to speak; he can string together a couple of spectacular shots. It is enjoyable to watch, but the truth of the matter is this: Lin was not as good as you thought he was. Sorry buddy.

@@paulturner8550 except for the fact many current and past superstars initially had the same issues in their careers but no one gave a damn. J. Lin wasn't a scrub who just got lucky a few times with good games, he was great on many teams and had a net positive output. Many players are injury prone but they at least get multiple chances and even get to become the center of their team's offense. Klay has been having sub par performance after sub par performance this year and tbh even in the last 3 years, yet no one thinks we should get rid of Klay. While I understand he gets a lot of hate, Westbrook still gets on a team even though every team he gets on does not improve at all (miss me with the cuz he was an MVP), and he has just as bad a assist-turnover rate as Lin and similar defensive . There are countless others (and many who also never get a second chance and I am aware of that), but if you are for the NBA being a fair place where just playing well should be enough to get on the team, you are sadly mistaken. No one thinks Lin was the next Jordan or Kobe, he was a great player that was looked at as expendable. Yes for awhile people praised him more than he should have been and that is understandable; however, he was also completely forgotten when he started playing at a high level too. And now that he is playing well elsewhere and trying to get back into the league, it is fishy that no one has called him up even as a reserve to help with a team's performance - I mean the guy is an nba champion, he could help in some way (funny how he got one when both Harden and Anthony never did). To think that racism wasn't a factor when he was literally being discriminated on the court. If any white person said the n word to a black athlete on the court they would be kicked off the team immediately and a Stop Racism Campaign would start. I cannot corroborate if any player was jealous of Lin but it just seems fishy that this sort of thing where he played second/third fiddle happened on more than one team. I think just like Isaiah Thomas, Lin deserves another chance to play in the NBA again.
