Hi, I think that 2 experiments are needed for our industry: 1. testing a planted tank with and without an under gravel coil heater to see if the heating technology improves plant growth (originally suggested by Dupla in the 1980s - The Optimum Aquarium) 2. testing light options for a tall tank 60 to 100 cm

Seems like a decent enough first experiment, although one month is just about enough to cover the startup-fase, so maybe another month after that to see how things develop? Another idea: heater and no heater. One is set to 23 degrees (day and night) and the other just fluctuates during the day and night. I like the idea behind these all-in-one tanks, but I must not buy any more tanks before I have all of the current 6 up and running! 😅

Theoretically you only need to do water changes when the nitrates get past a certain level. If you have low bio load that could take a really long time or could never happen because the plants are consuming the nitrates.

If possible, I'd be interested to see if a "siesta" (i.e. a break in the photo period, e.g. 5 hours lights on, 4 hours off, 5 hours on) has an effect on no-added-CO2 tanks, because this is what Walstad recommends in her book :) I'd also love to see what the ADA additives actually do, so that could be even multiple experiments (that is, if you can use just a single additive in isolation?)

It definitely works to some degree,along with things like, very low surface agitation,not disturbing the tank (no water changes for example before lights go on etc. Then I finally started co2 injection... not only do my plants look 100% better...its ALOT less work. Non co2 injection,when done properly is a PAIN..and the end results..plants look "ok" ..I'm not satisfied with just "ok" when it comes to my scapes.

No water changes doesn't mean no water changes from day 1 until the end of time. Everyone does water changes to begin with until a balance is found and plants are rooted and the soil has done the initial nutrient leaching (no more melting plants etc.). The experiment becomes all but irrelevant with the current approach, which is a real pity given all the effort put in. You should set two tanks up and run them for 4-6 weeks and this is when the experiment should start. That would be interesting. Positive note: I really do enjoy your channel...just constructive criticism :)

I want to create a no-filter, no water change tank. I'm intrigued with the substrate method of using aquatic compost/lava rock/crushed root tabs. I've also read that ADA aquasoils/contrasoils break down over time and would require changing or supplementing with root tabs after 1 to 3 years. Wanted to ask, from your experience: which substrate will require the least amount of redosing or additional supplementation? What method do you prefer? Have you tried both?

I have this tank too! Few things you may like to know for future use: 1. You can put the co2 diffuser in the end chamber and the pump pulls it through similar to an inline system. 2. An aquael heater also fits in the end chamber. 3. You can pull the sponge up in chamber 1 to act as a shrimp guard. 4. The pump works with a usb fan speed regulator to adjust the flow, good for if you put one of your beta in the tank. 5. When you do water changes, you can just press some tubing on the outflow and then top up in the end chamber to avoid stiring up the tank. Love the videos btw. Always awesome stuff.

Arguably, low tech is more likely to require water changes. In every one of his algae videos, he states plainly that low CO2 causes algae blooms. With his knowledge, it only makes sense to use CO2 in order to reduce the potential for algae.
@schilling3003
@schilling3003 2 ай бұрын
@@stephenblack8698 the point of a no water change or low water change tank is to minimize the effort required to maintain it. This defeats that purpose. All of my low maintenance tanks go through an algae bloom, it's perfectly normal and clears up on its own. It's still a great tank, but if I'm going high tech I'm going to just do the water changes as well.
@stephenblack8698
@stephenblack8698 2 ай бұрын
@@schilling3003 I don't find this to be logical. For me, low tech is more for a natural environment for the fish. You can spend very little money or a lot of money and still be a lazy tank owner. The low or high tech doesn't change self discipline in tank management.

Turns out the problem was a piece of lava rock with some bad bacteria in it because since it was removed, everything's been stable.
