I've been listening to music, for, going on...50 years now. Country, Rock, Disco, R&B, Punk...everything. This band, her singing and song craftsmanship...was always some of THEE best that I've ever heard. Her vocals style, which could be supremely powerful and gritty(This song), could then be matched with a silky, vulnerability, like in "Caroline". It truly has always made me sad, that the public never fully appreciated this group and Johnette, for the greatness and musical purity that they crafted. This, coming from someone who listens to everything from Frank Sinatra, to "Emerson, Lake and Palmer." Concrete Blonde...They stand tall, before most others.

I remember watching them perform this song live on one of the late night talk shows (Letterman, I think) and Johnette was singing and playing bass like she was possessed. Possibly Concrete Blonde's finest. Everything works /perfectly/! JN is at her most seductive and passionate since The Sky is a Poisonous Garden;'. Her bass hits all the right notes, and doesn't bother hitting any others. Paul Thompson' drums go /boom/ at all the right moments. James Mankey's guitar on this track should be an inspiration to a new generation. That solo is one of my favorite /ever/! A few, well placed notes that sells the emotion of the song. Pay attention, pop tarts! This is how it's done!
@Stormsinger99

Agreed on all counts. My only complaint about this video is that when I'm watching it, I get so distracted by Johnette's looks and moves that I don't pay enough attention to the audio. Then I have to play it again with my eyes closed. I can live with that, I think. ;)

Stormsinger99 This video always surprises me when I see it because I don't really think she looks like herself in it. She's beautiful in it, as she is in all their videos. But she just looks so different. I get the feeling that one of the music label-types took a strong hand in having hair, makeup and wardrobe craft her look in this video. That isn't a criticism. It speaks to how naturally beautiful and charismatic she is. She can pull off any look and her essence will still shine through.
@russwhiteman981
@russwhiteman981 10 жыл бұрын
JamesTheScot I agree completely, and have had the same suspicions about the involvement of music label execs and stylists. This video is completely unlike all of her other appearances that I've found. I was only half joking about it being a complaint...she's drop-dead gorgeous here, but I just can't accept it as anything but a stage persona. And no matter how she looks/looked at any point, her true beauty is in her songwriting and singing. I was lucky enough to see her a couple of years ago in Austin, and she sounded better than ever. She just seems to get better every year, like a fine wine.

Her voice is astonishing. Not merely the pitch or the power, but how she controls it. There are lots of singers out there who are technically solid, but somehow lack substance. Johnette has one of those rare voices that transcend the norm and become something greater than the sum of the parts. I could listen to this woman sing all day long and I'd STILL be finding new subtleties and nuances. Oh yeah...her lyrics are pretty damn good too...

I don't agree, in that, if they had a bit more success, then they might have not ended so soon, and ventured off to other projects. Some people, get tired of beating their pounding their hand on the sidewalk..and move on. Think of all the great bands that "might have been", but, got tired of success eluding them...and broke up. It's why Van Halen got tired of it, and were going to break up after their final show at the Starwood club. Luckily, in the audience, was Gene Simmons from KISS, and he convinced them not to break up and he helped get their first album made. The rest...is history.

My big sis loved this band and this singer soooooo much - I recall....so tonight I stumbled into this and Im on a straight video jag in memory of my sis- CARMEN🌹1967-2015 cancer did it. She was the best bar tender, Master of English and a PhD. A teacher. Writer. Poet. And a compassionate animal lover who adopted 5 dogs and a beautiful little kitten she spotted in the road one night friving home to her new house on raining shitstorm and stopped slamming on her breaks she opened the door ---and thought she killed it when she lost sight of it then it hopped into her lap purring and she drove on home and kept it!!❤🙋🎀🌹👀🐱

Joey by Concrete Blonde is one of my Top 5 all time songs. I've started listening to more of their work. Johnette's voice is one of the best ever.

Only a handful of people on this planet could handle that fucking monster of a chorus. Johnette deserved much much more from this shitty business that we call the Music Industry. She always gets the respect she so rightfully deserved in my house. Loved her since the debut in 1986.

Linda sem ser apelativa. E que voz! Talento nato. Não se fazem mais outras como ela, infelizmente. Coisas que só os bons anos 80 e 90 puderam fazer pela gente. Quem viveu, foi feliz. Saudades!

I revisit this video about ever six months just to confirm that I'm a fully functional male. She never disappoints. Great voice, great personality. I would give her a thousand dollars for that shirt she's wearing.

This song and others from the 90s make me miss a time that can no longer be so bad it brings me to tears and makes me feel bad for the generations that never knew it and never will.
