I bought Extech GX900, I returned Extech GX900, I bought Fluke 289. Long story short.

I'd love to be a fly on the wall at Flir/Extech when this review comes up in the next marketing meeting. No probe tips, so the meter is unusable out of the box: Fail. Resistance measurement broken: Fail. Four year old product with aborted calibration: Fail. I'm always amazed that companies don't QC products they send out for review. Unless there's something earthshaking in Part 2, the takeaway from this review is: buy a Fluke.

I have a meter from Snap on tools called the Verdict M2 . Its a DMM that can graph from .5sec up to 60 minutes and is also a 2 ch scope . It has a Aux mode that can interface current clamps and graphs those features as well .

Great video, thanks for that. With these high-tech multimeters, I miss a mode in which I can apply formulas to the measurement. To give a simple example: I would like to divide the measured frequency by five and have this result primarily displayed to read the speed of an engine.
@MrDeeejaaay9 жыл бұрын
At 21:55 you are comparing the Min/Max/Avg features but the average readings are substantially different. What's up with that?
@xmenken15 жыл бұрын
How about resistance? GX900 did not work on resistance.

Fluke 287/289 (and 187/189) does have "interval data logging" AND "event data logging" while extech and many other data logging multimeter (UT61 series, etc.) would do just "interval data logging". Interval data logging : is exactly what it sounds, take a reading and record data every time as the intervals your set ie. once every second, twice a second (usually can't be any faster than this), every 5 seconds, etc. Event data logging : basically the meter would record the reading every time the read value change more than pre-defined percentage, basically similar to min-max function and touch hold, but it'll read it very fast as the meter capable (250uS as their ads). Those percentage is 4% by default on most fluke DMM with min-max feature, but on 287/289 you can change it depends upon your needs. hence fluke seemed like having a more detailed granularity of data and more samples in 1 seconds and would seemed like less data should the changes in measurement is below percentage threshold, ie. you're logging a stable measurement with changes less than 4% during logging then you only have 1 logging data instead of hundreds in 5 minutes (compared if you record every 1 second interval).

I'm a Fluke 189 owner. The Fluke is great though some little details that really disappointed me. And that is some of its plastic parts just destroys itself with time like my rotary switch. Just like that with no forcing abuse, just years of usage. And it would be nice that Fluke would update its display to something similar to the Extech. One little detail I love of this Fluke 289 is the on\off button. Why they never thought of that before? It's so annoying to move the rotary switch all the time to turn it off!

Great video how can I get my hand on a pair or test leads like the ones that came with the Extech GX900 without purchasing the multimeter? Or will you forward me the maker and/or model number of those test leads. Again great video like all of your videos, I also have gotten a few of my electrician/electronic buddies to subscribe to your channel. I will be waiting for you to send me the information I’m requesting. Thank you MJL

Very nice video Martin. As you said display has very good quality i really like it. Unfortunately price is too high and for that price it is worth to buy fluke. I still think it is better brand...but Extech made nice copy ..but again as customer i don't care who made it first..if it is good quality and reliability is high...then i don't really care. I hope we will see who is better in input protection and quality of components and all that..If price was lower than fluke then i would go for Extech but because it is more than fluke...Fluke is the winner.

At 18:20 [kzbin.info/www/bejne/en2weHeEmK14i7c] you say that you measured resistance, and the leads were going to both meters. This is not a proper or workable configuration, as the electronics of the respective meters will interfere with each other. Though unlikely, it is possible that you may have caused damage to the Extech by doing this.
@mjlorton9 жыл бұрын
Shaun Onverwacht Did you hear what I said at that point in the video....? And no..it would not damage the meter...
@shaunonverwacht96269 жыл бұрын
mjlorton Yes, I know you realised the error and corrected it. And I agree that it _should_ not cause damage. But you never know... I'm keen to know the true cause of the malfunction.

I wish Fluke would update the aging 289 and bring the kind of display, and update rates, that this Extech has. Even though the Extech is clearly a real piece of crap otherwise.
@robertcalkjr.83259 жыл бұрын
Thanks Martin. I'll never trust Extech in the future. It's very apparent that they just don't care about their customers. But when it comes to that much money I would be inclined to go with Fluke anyway.

I really do not like the extech at all. I.ve tried them both but boy...Fluke is miles better. So yeah....Fluke all the way. I went and bought a Fluke 289 the very next morning. No regrets!!!!!

Keep googling you'll find it's a rebranded MM that can be bought for as little as $315 ~ the mark up is astounding ... I should add the model OEM (including insides) is decent but the unit you received is foobar... Maybe someone can send you a regular production model to re-open again and see the difference.
