Looks like we were there around the same time! The golden colored sailboat anchored off Matt's shoulder around 5:10 was there when we got there. His engine died when he was leaving Bermuda and it took him 40 days to make it to Horta!

@@mikeh720 We were actually tied up in the space just ahead of their bow. It was funny to see the place without seeing our boat! The big white tag that looks faded was actually being repainted while we were there. That guy seems to visit the Azores every few years to touch up his painting (and add another year to the artwork).

Oh my gosh, a 40 day sail?! That makes our 25 days seem pretty pathetic. 😜 I think we arrived on July 6th and left around the 16th? We're back in Angra now and will be bringing the boat to Praia next week before we sail out. Hope Dec-March won't be too harsh for you here, and we'll get together for a beer in April when we're back!

Edward, We still have almost all the tools from when we built out the boat aboard (we need to slim down). And spares are mostly leftover parts from the build too. Nothing specific to crossing. On the last boat, we had every spare you could imagine... I even welded-up an emergency rudder. But with this boat being all new parts, and us having more sailing experience, we have a bit more confidence in the boat and our ability to 'make it work". Matt

Edward Walsh ...... the best option for spares is buy a second boat the same as yours and tow it behind you were ever you go. When something breaks on your boat just take the part off the spare boat. When the spare boat is stripped....... sink it for a reef and buy another spare boat to tow ..... for more spares. An old joke..... but I couldn't resist.

Portugal. I love it already. I don't think I could leave it so fast for ports unknown but c'est la vie. Quick comment on sharing dockside. Saw another channel use large old tires wrapped, almost braided, I'm sure there's a knot sequence, in white line. Thicker than a regular sheet line but the fenders they made, wow. I believe he has a larger boat and they worked super well. Just a cheap idea if you need more cushion. Great vid and Georgie looked happy to get back on board. Have fun.

Luckily the winds did die down and we were able to stay...but without any available slips the other option would have been to anchor in a harbor with bad holding. Tires would be a good idea for long term, but with only needing something (of that size) for a few days, it wouldn't have been worth the trouble for us. 🙂

I'm from Horta, an American cousin just sent me this video! I went to the same party in town, on your first night out. This was in July, the celebration of Horta turning to a city. That bumping and crushing situation against the cement wall, yeah... We have been asking for a big upgrade on the size and boat spots, every Summer the Marina hits a new record on the number of boat entries. In the meantime, your boats suffer a little bit... sorry about that :/ So cool you enjoyed it and made it back to Faial! (Yeah, that place you ate is good for a couple of drinks, but not for eating. By that you may have seen a different restaurant, Genuino, really good for fish!) When you come back, I'd be happy to show around and recommend some good restaurants!! Good winds!! :)

Hello Ana! You are so lucky to live in Horta, we have absolutely fallen in love with that town (and Faial) so much that we actually considered buying property there the first time we came in 2014. What a coincidence you were at the same party as us! I wish we'd been there for a night or two before it was on so we could have attended well rested, lol. We did decide to winter in Terceria, and although we have to leave for 90 days to renew our visa, when we get back in April our plans are to sail back through Sao Jorge and Faial before hopefully making a stop in Flores. We'd love for the chance to meet up if we get back there, thank you for the offer!

It’s all about the grain direction, plywood is a sandwich of opposing grain which makes it a stable material. When you glue a stable material to a material that expands more you run into trouble. Maybe a bread board design that allows for wood expansion and contraction.

We've had expansion of the hardwood maple in other areas too, making some of the floorboards tight and hard to remove, but this is the only spot that it has caused warping to the plywood base. This hatch cover was an extremely tight fit and very hard to pull up, so I think the pressure caused the buckling/warping. Matt

Great post! And with such nice fresh veggies, I could never understand, from the 10+ sailing videos I watch, not one boat uses a dehydrator or some sort of freeze dry. Is it the bulk of the units and expense to use? I mean dehydrated fruit and veggies would be the way to go I think.

Great video thank you! When you glue two dissimilar panels together they will often Warp whenever the humidity changes. 1 panel will always expand slightly different than the other forcing the panels to warp as one unit. The Wider the panel's the worst the problem. If it warps again try recutting the slots in the bottom panel and then fastening a strengthening Batten (or two) to the back with only screws which will allow a slight amount of movement. If you oversize the holes in the Batten for the screws it will work even better.

Interesting to see that The Azores is considered to be "in" Portugal. I don't think you'd ever hear someone in Puerto Rico say "here in the United States." Also green peppers are members of the capsicum family and since it's a seed case, it's called a pod just like the spicier "chili" peppers. I noticed you didn't mention painting the boat name on the famous sea-wall. May you did it on the first trip?

MJ Sailing You may have figured out that you don’t really need the water maker. If you crossed the Atlantic without one, then how do you feel about crossing the Pacific ? Might need one for the Pacific. Twenty years from now your going to look back on these memories, and your going to feel great ! (Regardless of the water maker). You have a great partner. @@greggronemeier1256 - I still wouldn't cruise without a watermaker. But for a crossing, when you can fill the boat with extra water, it's not that big a deal. While in the Azores, the anchoring options are so limited that we are in marinas enough to fill our tanks. It would be really inconvenient to not have a watermaker just about anywhere we like to sit at anchor. Matt

Yes, we've had plenty of Super Bock too! While we do like that one, I think Matt and I still favor Sagres over it, haha. Just has a better flavor to us. I did get to try Melo Abreu while on Sao Miguel, and here on Terceria I was just able to try Korisca...which I fell in love with but can't find at the stores!

Try to find a beer branded "Belzebuth"! (I think it's a french brand!) One of the varieties has 13% alchool! By profession, I'm a production sound mixer. A wind muff (it is NOT a dead cat, I don't care what Rode says) works up to a point. I have a Rycote for my Rode NTG3. Two tips: use your low cut filter to filter out some wind noise, my Zoom H6 goes up to 285 Hz. Second, I have a sound blimp. It works great with the Rode or the Sennheiser 416. Way over your budget and your style of shooting. Also some software will cut out some wind noise, but again it's expensive iZotope. You might find a cheaper solution. Or you could find someone online (fiverr) to do it cheap for you! Anyway, love the videos and think it's great you are living your adventures. Life goes by pretty quickly, you go around only once. Love Georgie as well.

I think fender boards would be a prefect solution. We used them going through the lock in the Erie Canal, but since we usually try to stay out of marinas, haven't carried them since. I wanted to get motorcycle tires as fenders... mostly because I like the work boat look, but Jess was against that. Matt

Other than hatch cover any other unexpected maintenance required after crossing? Sorry about he starboard side damage as result of rafting, that sucks. I know that welding the aluminum requires special gear but overall for that particular situation are you better off with aluminum versus fiberglass hull? Merry Christmas!

I don't know if you use any type of APP to keep track of which beers you have tried and if you liked them or not but my son and i use an app called Untappd (yeah that is how it is spelled) It keeps track of each style of beer you drink and you can rank them from 1 to 5 if you liked it or not so later in the future if you don't remember if you liked it or not you can look to see how you rated it in the past. I have only had 60 different styles but my son is over 600 different beers. Thank You for sharing your travels with us i really enjoy them.

Do you get enough power from your solar panels? I can see you have two foldable ones on the bimini and one on the hard sprayhood. What do you do when you pack the bimini away?

Mike, The two 100 watt on the bimini are velcroed in place and can be easily removed to store below. But, while in the caribbean, the bimini never comes down... it is way to sunny for that. Now that we are away from the never ending sun, we just store the panels below the aft cabin cushion and bring them out as needed. We have a 100 watt on the dodger top and a 300 watt on the aft radar/windgen arch. With the 600 watts total, we are fine in the Caribbean, but the grey skies in the Azores during winter doesn't keep up. Matt

Rafting & Docking: Did it cost to tie up along the wall? Also, what woulds a slip in a Horta marina (if available) go for?

The price to tie up to the wall was the same as if there was a slip available. About 14 euro a day for a boat our length. Ancoring in the harbor is free (They may charge a 3 euro a day discharge fee), but we heard the holding there was bad and boats were constantly dragging.

@@dreupen We are wintering in the Azores for around $400 a month (when paid monthly). They have a 3 and 6 month rate, but we don't stay in one place long enough for that to work. UK in winter was cheaper, but much, much colder :) Matt

Matt, To keep your hatch cover flat you need to add wood to the bottom of the hatch cover similar to the wood on the top. This is called balanced construction and is the best way to keep a layered panel flat. Here is a link to an article that explains this - woodadvocate.com/2014/07/28/the-secret-to-flat-panels/ The stresses in a panel must be identicle on both sides of center or warp will occur sooner or later especially if the humidity is different on each side. This is the reason all plywood has an odd number of plies that are the same thickness in the same order on each side of a center ply. Good luck with your woodworking adventures. You could drop anchor in the little harbor just outside the marina, but we heard the holding was terrible and people kept dragging. We were a little unsure at first, but then you'd constantly look out there to find boats not in the same spot they had been in the previous day, because they were forced to re-anchor. - - We've heard about the $14 beers in Norway!! Looks like we'll be sober for our time there, lol.

It's kind of a given in that spot where if you're against the reception dock (or the inside wall of the marina), they are rafting areas and if you don't like it you can leave. There's no choosing to be alone. We would have much preferred to not have anyone raft up with us, but...it was worth it to be able to be in Horta.

It seems to be a problem in Europe and Africa. Inland water ways it's even worse. In demolition boat derby the larger mass wins. So look for group of smaller boats to tie up to. If you are not the bully boat then you are the victim boat. :( It is rotten but the way it is.

She goes below deck. When in a marina or anyplace that she could get hurt or lost, she stays on her harness and leashed to the boat. She'll sit in the cockpit and watch people come and go, but we can't let her wonder or she may not be able to get back. Matt

practical solution is for the largest boat to go on the inside , smallest on the outside,, easy.

Problem comes when the biggest boat is only there for a night and the others a week. Once we were in against the wharf, it was impossible for us to get off the dock again to trade positions. Since the wind was pushing us into the dock, and there were other boats three deep fore and aft of us, we couldn't even spring our way out. We had to have the marinas tender pull us beam out when we did leave. Matt

I have a quick question Rafting up with others? Do they ask to do this and what about people walking across you boat. Is it just a given its ok to board another boat in the middle of the night or is there a protocol?

Typically, in rafting situations, you cross others boats on the foredeck and not in the cockpit. But beyond that, you come and go across others boat as you please. Unfortunately, the marina is only full for a short time of the year and they can't build enough slips to accommodate all the boats passing through, so you raft up to save space. It's typically fine unless the wind is pushing you into the docks hard and waves keep you bouncing. Matt

Strange....the information I used was taken from the plaque right in front of São Sebastião Castle. Plus as I'm reading my IMRAY guide at the moment to gather more information on the island of Faial, it is showing that Angra was the capital of the archipelago while under Spanish rule.

There is a difference between the succession war time.. when Portugal got one dynasty of 3 kings, that they were Spanish (due to family succession issues) and us being Spanish trough a conquer...but we never became Spanish.. probably that’s the confusion. 😜

You could use a couple of anchors to hold you away but obviously is difficult when boats raft up or even one with a bridal, but again not with boats rafting up , the outside boat should perhaps try it , it's not at all fair on you to have so many boats on the outside that's unreasonable

Everyone was pretty pissed with the marina for how they assigned rafting positions. The only factor they seemed to be concerned with is when the inside boat was leaving, so the outside boats didn't have to move unreasonable... which is great, but they needed to better consider the size and weight of the boats rafting. There is a provision that if you are coming from Ireland, you can bring a pet via a private yacht. The pet only needs to enter via the PET program into Ireland.... pretty easy for the first part getting her into Ireland. We then have to make a call before entering the UK and we're good to go. Matt
