Great video Matt & Jess. Having visited aboard many other cruiser's boats over the years, I can attest to the virtue and reward of doing a boat project right even if it has to be done over. Quality work stands the test of time and enhances beauty. Hasty work fails prematurely and degrades the aesthetic. DIY adds to your skillset and enhances the seaworthiness of a yacht and its master. Nature degrades all construction over time and use. A wise captain does not leave port on a vessel up to the task of the passage. I feel like I know your boat almost as intimately as my own through your vlogs, great work you two!!
@mattjohnson67167 жыл бұрын
Thanks Thomas. After cruising for a few years, we sure to understand the importance of having a sound vessel before shoving off. I don't know how some of the delivery captains have the guts to take many of the boats they are hired to move into the ocean. Matt

We'd been hearing that a lot of US companies will buy there sails there and re-brand them. We figured why not cut out the middle man since we did have a month for them to make and ship it (which was actually even quicker than that!) We'll make sure to do lots of testing with the new staysail and give reports, but I think she'll be getting most of her use in the North Atlantic and Arctic in heavier winds. 🙂

I'd rather buy used sails, and with the hank-on headsail that's pretty easy to do as they are cheap and plentiful. But we are going to need to bite the bullet eventually with the mainsail. Hi Jessica, Great job on the Sunbrella sun cover. An unbelievable task amount of work by hand. Marina owners do not like having to tell us sailors we should not be doing something. They have rules and regulations for the benefit of all of us sailors, so what we want to do does not interfere with the rights of the other marina users. That said ___ you should always ask first to avoid confrontations and putting the marina owner/manager in a position where he also does not want to be. PS: Trick of the trade ____ forget straight pins and spray glue. Far too time consuming Get a long reach Swingline stapler (12 inch reach) and staple the Sunbrella fabric down into place. As another fellow sailor said below ___ the new sun cover should have been an inch or two wide and sewing into newer fabric, rather than using the same old stitching line as your sew down line. Overall considering your age ___ you guys are doing a great job. As they say Live and Learn. Just to let you know ___ as a Pro with the correct work tables and machines __ it would have taken me approximately 6 hours to remove the old and add the new one on. Everything is faster easier __ when you know what you are doing. Tell Matt to get himself a long stiff 2 inch wide Stanley planner blade to use as a scraper which is the fastest way to remove old finish.

@MJSailing7 жыл бұрын
No, we were obviously never going to leave before we or the boat were ready, but we also do need a good kick in the pants to get moving. There are a few little things to be handled now (like getting the outboard running, and cutting the foam for our pilot house cushions), but then everything else should be able to come with us. Even if we just sit in a calm anchorage in the Bahamas to work, at least there will be beaches and reefs to explore in our free time. 😀

Wow the owner wouldn't let you finish in the little room. Not much you could do to that foor and I'll bet that for the most part nobody goes in there. I can really appreciate all the work that went into the new Sunbrella fabric. Sometimes projects don't go the way we like though....I too would make preperations to leave, they probably don't need any more of your money. At least for now....

Oh my gosh, this project was such a pain! But if I had to do it over again, knowing what I do now, I think it would be much easier and faster. Or I should have followed the Sailrite video, lol. kzbin.info/www/bejne/nGPIiXqId7yYh8k

Well I brought the sail home to sew and found it had a 3 foot tear at the leech seam so not repairable so looks like I need a new sail also. I am waiting to see how precision sails works out for you. I already received a quote from them and they are very reasonable compared to my local sailmaker. Actually a few hundred cheaper.

A funny thing happened this evening. We were discussing hitting up the local Harbor Freight for a hot knife. We're holding off for now. What were the drawbacks you experienced with your HF hot knife?
@mattjohnson67167 жыл бұрын
It's like a cheap soldering iron... it doesn't get hot enough to do much. We originally purchased it to cut the foam for our cushions, but it just ended up tearing the foam and not melting anything. Matt

'Preciate your reply. How did it work on your sail material?
@mattjohnson67167 жыл бұрын
We never actually tried it on Dacron sail cloth, but with Sunbrella, it doesn't do much. The Sailrite hk, while ridiculously expensive, works amazingly. Hard to justify for a few small projects, but if you have even one big project, it's worth it. Matt

Matt, thanks for the update. To date all we've done was sail repair, minor rip repairs, etc so a 30 watt soldering pencil has worked out pretty well. I just took the tip and filed it to a chisel point and we got by okay. We're thinking of upgrading so we don't have to wrastle with sacrifical cutting surfaces anymore. Using our methods, by the time we're done, it looks like someone has tried to make a woodburning project. I tried to fabricate something for a soldering gun but the wire was too large so it never got hot enough. Anyway, it depends on whether you want to scream once or twice. Twice is screaming at the pos failing and then for the price of a good one. Screaming once is coughing up the cost of a decent tool first.

Have you ever tried Solarez UV-Cured Epoxy? It's great stuff, no mixing, self-leveling and it cures in 3 mins when exposed to sunlight or UV. It's very durable and designed to work well in a marine environment.
@mattjohnson67167 жыл бұрын
I've never heard of that before. I'm always looking for a quick epoxy for stuff around the boat. Thanks, Matt

First if your going to do this again get a book called "The sailmakers apprentice"this will help you a lot . When the cover is put on the leach of the sail the sail is usually place under tension and then marked for position. I believe sailrite has a video on this process but im sure by the time you have posted this video the project is done and looking good
@mattjohnson67167 жыл бұрын
Like most things, we attempt to do it the logical way.... only to later realize that was totally wrong. Jess then watched the Sailrite video and it was completed much easier. Of course, we also have the Sailmakers apprentice and a few other books on canvas work that haven't been cracked open. This is how we learn :( Matt

Wow, lots of harsh criticism about Matt and Jessica's choice to finish projects before leaving -- probably because the ones making the comments never had the guts to follow their own dreams. Not far now Matt and Jess!

Thanks for having our back Kim & Scott! Most people don't understand how long projects like these can take...or how many things can go wrong when you start them. But at least we know that you can sympathize with what we're going through. 😉

I don't know how many times people tried to rush us on our way. But all those projects that we carried along for so many years were a huge burden -- and you know how it goes trying to fix stuff at anchor without a car. Year thirteen now, and we're finally getting rid of those alligator clips on the masthead connections! 😉 Not far now! Wish we were as far along as you guys.

Oh my gosh, I can not wait to get into my 'nice' clothes once we're done with boat projects. On of my jobs this week is going to be purging my cabinet of 90% of my worn down and paint stained clothes. But I still need to keep a few for future projects. 😉

How much money have you guys spent in that marina? Not wanting you taking up the patio is one thing. I get that. But telling you to work in a hot parking lot? Time to move.
@MJSailing7 жыл бұрын
Probably about $25,000, lol. Yes, definitely time to get moving on, we can't wait to be at anchor again.

I love your channel; you are two amazing young people. Would you reccomend FarEastSails to anyone looking to buy sails?
@mattjohnson67167 жыл бұрын
We had a good experience with Far East, but I kind of knew what I wanted (at least I think). It's not one of the places I'd suggest unless you have a plan since they aren't there to go over the measurements in person. I'm sure some lofts can do well over the phone asking you questions, but Far east uses Google Translate for their emails, so I can't imagine a phone call would accomplish much. Matt Matt
