Wait, I just noticed: On the cover, *none* of these characters look like teens ! Snowflake and Trailblazer look like they're in their early to mid 40s while Safespace and Screentime look like they're in their 30s.

These character designs, except B-Negative who really doesn't look like he belongs in this comic stylistically, don't really tell us anything about these characters. Trailblazer doesn't look like a trailblaizer, she looks more like a Splatoon character. Silhouette-wise Snowflake and Safespace don't really look different enough, and their personalities are very poorly conveyed. They look like blank slates. I know that they are twins but these characters don't really stand out in any significant way.

@ThatGreenMach1ne4 жыл бұрын
@@skwills1629 Yeah, but unless they are identical twins they shouldn't look completely identical. Even if they are identical, their personality traits should shine through in their designs. For example, the twins in Loud house are both identical, but their personalities shine through. Even if Snowflake and Safespace are meant to represent the trope of indistinguishable twins, they should both share some kind of personality trait that makes them both stand out from the rest of the team. For example, the Amethyst Twins from Land of the Lustrous/Hoseki no Kuni while essentially indistinguishable from each other, their personality still stands out from the rest of the gems.

b-negative does have potential, but based on the "bad attitude" comment and his name, i don't have high hopes personally, i would change safespace's powers (and rename him guardian or paladin or literally anything better than safespace) so that he can create barriers by default, but can activate more aggressive powers if he's protecting someone. that way he can always protect himself if necessary, and the theme they want remains. his powers aren't a means to destroy the enemy but to protect what's important to him and because of that, he can only use his combat powers if violence is truly his only option left i would change screentime's origin to being literally connected to the internet. let's say he suffered from a severe illness that left him weak and bedridden. because of that, his grandfather decided to make a device that allowed him to connect his consciousness directly into the server so he had at least one way to interact with the world. while on the server, he discovers the dark web and all the hidden crimes that happen without anyone noticing. because of this discovery, he decides to become an "oracle"-esque superhero that helps other heroes fight crime. his hero design could be an actual digital avatar trailblazer would be better as a tech hero than a magic hero. instead of inheriting a magic bag, it's technologically advanced bag she invented that can create items and weapons out of hard light. that's also why it sometimes give her the wrong thing she needs. it's advanced, but ultimately still a prototype and has glitches that need to be resolved as they happen. it would also explain her hero name better. she's a technological trailblazer their base concepts aren't inherently bad, but they're very unrefined

Agreed. 100 percent, as you probably should've written this story for Marvel comics. But what about snowflake? What would you do to change her? Or him, or it I should say? I personally think Snowflake's name should've been something else. Yeah, I can definitely see what they were trying to do if they were serious with these characters, but it doesn't work because the name itself is too on the nose with what they're going for, and like these girls said in the video, they don't really give snowflake much of a backstory to make you feel invested in wanting to know more about him/her....no all you get is that snowflake is non binary and we're supposed to be invested to want to know more about her/him. What they should've done with snowflake imo would be a) change the name to something less on the nose with what they were going for. And b), they should've either hired someone from the trans community to help write the character so they could've presented a non binary character that the trans community would've liked rather than the abomination we got because even trans members have complained about snowflake already. Or what they could've done was brought in trans activists to act as consultants for the comic book itself so the writers for marvel comics could've bounced ideas off them to get a better understanding on how to create a non binary character that the trans community could get behind; eerily similar to what the creator of "Rocko's Modern Life" did, when he was writing the trans girl character for his Netflix movie, "Rocko's Modern Life: Static Cling."

@@thewolfofwallstreet627 I wouldn't really change snowflake (besides giving them a better codename). Their powers are actually fine. The internet can both help you quite a bunch, but also overflow you with often useless information, expose you to disturbing crap you wished you had never known about or make you addicted. A teen having his mind constantly in close connection to the internet would probably face quite a lot of struggles before being able to control his power without letting it destroy his sanity. He could be a good representation for teens addicted to browsing and if written right, could be a lot more relatable to a lot of readers than most of the cast is. His journey to control his powers could even motivate some to make efforts to control better their own screentime and their use of it. Speaking about this issue through a comic book meant for teens in a sympathetic and realistic way could actually be a very good way to get through the defensiveness of those who really need help. But yeah, the writters don't seem willing to dig this deep for their characters, they prefer to assert their wokeness because they know so little about teens this is the only way they found to appeal to them. 🙄

Snowflake and Safespace are so disappointing (I mean, someone summoning small pointy things and their male partner has limited defensive powers? That's like a really cheap knockoff of Cloak and Dagger) I accidentally got the idea for a sort of redesign I might as well share, ended up triplets since Safespace's powers aren't even relevant to the name. No strong feelings on their gender identities, so left it generic: Snowflake. Blue royalty-ish outfit with a crown-like headpiece. Has the full range of ice powers, but the abilities 'overheat' with repeated use. They can't use the same general type of 'attack' (like sharp projectiles to throw, or big barriers to hide behind, or long stretches to walk on) more than a few times before it just comes out as useless water/mist, until they do other (unique!) things for a while to recharge. Ironically hot-headed and confrontational. Does ice sports and sometimes uses their powers to seem better at them. Safe Space. Green soldier/guard-ish outfit with a fuzzy hat. Can make these sort of green electric fields around them that don't let anything in or out, though they can't maintain it if they get hurt while it's up. They could trap a bad guy in there with them but they'd just get beat up, and they could use it to protect their friends from outside threats but that's also protecting the threats from their friends, it's a tricky power for combat. A soccer goalie and a hugger, impressive upper body strength. Wants to be literally everyone's friend. White Knight. Red/pink armor-ish outfit with a big red feather. They can sort of magnetize towards sources of kinetic energy/heat, making them supernaturally good at leaping into danger; they take damage like normal but also store up that energy to release a sort of flame burst once they've gotten hit enough. Absolutely embodies their power to internalize pain while protecting others from it; they take on way too much responsibility, no fun allowed. Seems like a "cool" serious person, doesn't like sharing feelings.

The difference is these characters reek of being made to check boxes and to be cynical. Hero Academia is full of similarly bizarre looking characters with absurd powers, like a kid who makes cellophane tape come out of his elbows- but they're designed around these qualities. None of these reveals feel like any care or deliberate thought was put into them, and what effort is there was bare minimum. Compare Fatgum with Trailblazer in terms of having a superhero who is morbidly obese. With the former it's the core of his gimmick as a hero: his powers revolve around it and nearly everything about his look and concept design accent him being big, fat, and cartoonishly round. With Trailblazer, it looks like an afterthought, like she's only fat for the sake of sending an unhealthy body positive message- I don't have any faith her shape will be a legit issue like it should. Characters like the Blob are actually very physically adept despite their appearances thanks to the handwave of extranormal physiology- Trailblazer so far doesn't have that and is just a fat kid with a magic backpack. These New New Warriors would normally be parodies but are being pushed with this reveal completely unironically...that's the scary part.

The only good thing to come out of this comic is all the meme material that it from it. To make all of it worse, there a tons of much better characters who have similar powers and who can use them better. The more people break down these characters, the more lame they become. We're returning to a point similar to the 90s where companies were trying too hard to 'reach out' to a younger audience all the while alienating everyone and it comes through very loud and clear from the writer of this. For starters, no one wants to 'own' the terms Snowflake or Safespace. Even your stereotypical 'progressive' don't find these terms endearing and indeed do find them offensive. No one proudly goes about claiming they are a snowflake because even they don't want to be seen or called fragile. Even they want to be seen as brave and strong and that's how they project themselves as, not as FRAGILE. It's the same with safespace, considering people take that term SERIOUSLY. We joke about it but the real meaning of 'safe space', away from people joking about it, is a place people can retreat to when their lives are in danger, such as an abusive situation. Marvel is not adding 'power' to that but mocking it even more than anyone online could ever do. Screentime also doesn't make sense as a name seeing that can also mean a several things. In fact, wouldn't FACETIME make for a bette code name considering his powers as well as the relevance it has to what they're trying to do? When people think of Screentime, they think more of an attention seeker more so than anything technical but maybe that's part of the pun? Trailblazer is the weapon-based one of the group considering her 'powers' come from her backpack but yes it does look more tech-based than anything spirital considering the big thing with her is the backpack is supposed to be sentient yet it looks like something that came out of Ben 10. B-Negative.....now he's just fucking lame. And considering the way they describe him as another character getting hand-me-downs, why couldn't he just be a Mutant with his own unique powers that seem similar to that of a vampire? Or are they setting things up where each character fills a specific slot and he's the one who is 'connected' to an established character? Either way, yeaaaaah. This is lame. But I'm glad to hear your guys are doing well in all this madness. Considering things, taking time off is understandable.... ....... But what did you MEAN 'that was supposed to be a secret'? What...what are you guys hiding from us?

Speaking of which you're right it looks more tech than magic, something like from Jack Kirby's Fourth World. The god she's referring to is probably a Native American deity (and most likely be a lot of Christian bashing) as I doubt Marvel would be dumb enough to tie in to Jack Kirby's DC property. Trailblazer's whole costume seems to be an example of the "cosplay friendly" costumes that many are getting tired of when they're uncreative like this. "They weren't trying to make comic book characters, they were trying to create headlines." And the twins' analysis hits the nail on the head and gets the "like" before the video is even half over. I wasn't into the New Warriors back in the day, but not because I thought they were too cool, to me they seemed to be trying too hard to be cool to actually be cool. (And it was a transparent effort to take a bunch of c-or-d-list characters and have them ride Night Thrasher's coat tails back into the lime-light - I did give Marvel points for creating a new team that didn't have an "x" in the title.) But then they actually wrote some pretty good stories. This series also feels like the writers are trying desperately really hard to be cool (at least to diversity-studies students at Evergreen University - the "Zoomers" they claim to be their target audience rolls their eyes at this millennial identity politics stuff). But instead of good stories, these kids look like they only exist to serve as woke sermon illustrations.

The twins could work, with one being an attacker and the other a defender, but the names, the design, how they are presented, all of it is a mess. Trailblazer kills all stakes, since her power is basically "Deus/Diabolus ex Machina as the plot demands." The only one kind of interesting is B-negative, and even then he would need a new name and clear motivations. As a whole, these characters are unfixable, because their creation was flawed, "fixing" them implies giving them new names, new designs, better powersets and motivations, in other words, throw the characters into the trash and make new ones.

Glad to see you two are doing better! As far as these comics, you have to understand, the writers have egos that are large as an ocean and more sensative than a touch screen. They think they are living muses to their audiance and blame fans when their title tanks. When dealing with narssistists the only way is to let them fail and either wake up to their own huburis or crash and burn. Unfortunately, Marvel seems to be baffelingly erecting two middle fingers and would rather see their company fail and be liquidated by Disney than humble themselves and hire some writers with ambition outside of identity politics. Safespace is just a crappy rip off of Steven Universe. Screentime is a boomers understanding of the internet (also if he's the internet made flesh shouldn't he be 90% porn?) Trailblazer: The "mystic bag" is a half assed pull from the medicine bag that healers and sages carry whos origin comes from dozens of native american tribes, but the writers were to lazy to actually research them. The Coronavirus is possibly going to drive the remaining comic shops to extinction, the discounts rather than help the shops will probably drive the nail deeper in the coffin. However, based on how the writers afe actting you'd think they enjoy the thought of losing not just a job, but their industry entirely. Stay safe!

I completely agree with you guys on the way the twins are posed. That is _super_ suggestive. I wonder if nobody at Marvel noticed, someone noticed but didn't say anything, or someone noticed and did speak out about it but was ignored. Regardless, it's out there for all the world to see, now, and it's making Marvel look _really_ bad. Starting with Safespace, first of all, while a guy wearing pink isn't necessarily a bad thing (since pink was historically regarded as a more masculine color until the 1950's and can look good on a guy if used properly,) the shade of pink they chose is _really_ bad. Secondly, his powers are, as you pointed out, too easily overcome by his opponents. Thirdly, he's basically a lame version of Sue Storm without the invisibility. That's not very exciting, nor is it original. I know there are a lot of other superheroes out there with similar powers, but just because two characters have similar powers doesn't mean they can't be interesting in their own ways. But Safespace isn't interesting as he's been described. He sounds pathetic because he can't protect himself with his force fields. Keeping yourself alive is actually really important to keeping other people alive. You can protect them if you're dead. Snowflake is dumb. They say she's non-binary, yet she's clearly intended to be another female on the team (which is why I'll use the pronouns she/her while discussing her.) After all, if Snowflake were a non-binary guy, you'd only have one biological female on the team, and we couldn't have that, could we? Ice shuriken don't sound very intimidating to me, either. Ice can cut and damage things, but _it's ice._ Snowflake's shuriken are going to be melted if she uses them against anyone with powers that involve fire and heat, plus they're likely to shatter against hard enough materials. Her being "non-binary" was done to check a diversity box on a list, and there's no denying that. Even non-binary people are calling them out on this, and with good reason. It's painfully obvious pandering and it's stupid. Finally, the shade of blue they used is kind of hard on the eyes, at least as a primary color for the outfit. Actually, now that I think about it, that's the problem with both characters' outfits: The primary color choice is bad. If they'd been wearing mostly white with pink and blue trim, I think they would have looked more appealing, or at least been easier to look at without your retinas starting to ache. White hair with pink and blue streaks or something like that might have been a better choice for their heads, too. As to the design of the costumes, they look like bad gym wear. Maybe it's just me, but I think people going into combat need protective armor, like shoulder, elbow, and knee pads, at least, to protect the joints, at the very least. There's a lot you can do with tactical armor to make it look interesting while keeping it functional, is all I'm saying. Turning our attention to Screentime, _WHAT IN THE WORLD IS EXPERIMENTAL INTERNET GAS AND HOW DOES IT GIVE YOU SUPER POWERS!?!_ Him being connected to the internet at all times isn't an issue for me so much as the way he has a permanent connection to the internet. It's obvious he's going to be used mostly for hacking and delivering exposition, as well as making tons and tons of (probably dated) internet references. He's not going to age well, is he? His design is dull and his costume doesn't really suggest anything about him being a hacker-type character. Have the writers never heard of Cybergoths? Why does Screentime (ugh, that name!) look more like Ben 10 knockoff? B-Negative. Wow, do we really need _another_ vampire-type character? And he's a goth, too? Shocking! Who could have possibly come up with such a novel idea as making a vampire character be a goth _EVERYONE! EVERYONE WOULD HAVE MADE THAT CONNECTION!!!_ How about you take the vampire-type character in a new direction and make him _ANYTHING ELSE?!_ For example, a skateboarder or a jock? Something associated with summer and sunlight and cheerful things? B-Negative is probably the most cliched and derivative character of the whole group and it's obvious they really weren't trying too hard when they came up with him. Frankly, he strikes me as a character they threw in just because they wanted to do a five-man-band group. And, finally, Trailblazer. Look, I don't think fat shaming is okay, but I had a friend who basically ate himself to death (he was over 400 lbs. and died of a massive heart attack in his thirties,) so I have a lot of problems with the whole "body positivity" thing. I also work at a hospital, so I see what obesity does to people on a daily basis. There are so many negative effects being overweight has on your body. Oh, but, that aside, if Trailblazer is going to be a physically active person, then she probably can't maintain a pudgy figure because she'd be burning a lot of calories. She'd have to be consuming _a lot_ of food to be that overweight while working as a superhero. But let's talk about her backpack for a moment. The way it is described means it's pretty much a deus ex machina waiting to happen. All they had to do was specify some kind of limitation on how it works (and her not being fully in control isn't a limitation, it's a setup for comedy,) and we'd have some sense of how she would use it. A limited number of uses each day, a limit to items that could fit in the backpack normally, a limit on how many things she can take out at a time or how often she can take things out in a certain time frame, _anything_ would have given us some idea of how it works beyond what was described. But as it is described, the backpack is too powerful. There is nothing stopping her from pulling out five bazookas for everyone to use or an endless supply of money. Again, as it has been presented, it's overpowered in the extreme. If it functions differently in the comics, fine, but I only have the information we've all been given, and the backpack sounds like a giant deus ex machina. And, look, the protagonist of the book series I'm planning has a backpack that's connected to a pocket dimension, so I know what I'm talking about, here. I put _a lot_ of thought into how her backpack worked because I knew it had to be consistent in how it functioned and how it could be used. I didn't want it to become "the bag of winning" where my protagonist could just pull out anything she needed in any place at any time. Limitations are what make things interesting, after all, and showing how a character works around limitations makes them look clever. It also keeps you from using the item as a crutch. I'm presently revising the backpack my character has from my original concept of it in order to make sure that it works logically, isn't too overpowered, and that the things she pulls out of it aren't too specific to the situation that she's facing. That is, she won't have something like the antidote to an exceedingly rare and practically unheard of kind of snake venom stashed away in the pocket dimension "just in case." She will, however, have planks of wood, nails, tools, rope, glue, lanterns, and other things which she can use in a wide variety of situations _and that any sensible person_ would think to keep in a pocket dimension if they had one. I mean, really, if you had something like that, wouldn't you put stuff like a tool box inside it in case you needed one? Wouldn't you put stuff like a first aid kit, some flashlights and batteries, food rations, and other things in there for emergencies? That's the approach I'm taking with my character's backpack. I _HOPE_ that the writers of this comic are clever enough to look at Trailblazer's backpack in a similar manner, but given the lack of creativity they're showing with these characters, I'm more inclined to think the backpack will just be used for lame comedy bits and as a deus ex machina.

Patrick Leigh Presents I can pretty much agree with you in almost everything. The twins need some extra time to be recreated. For twins, their powers are unbalanced, considering that Snowflake can create her weapons whenever she wants, and Safe Space can only use his in a more specific way. They also should explain WHY Safe Space’s powers work like that. Adrenaline, emotion, something! And if they’re doubling down on his abilities than he needs to evolve from just having to protect others for his shields to work. Plus, the writer neglected any kind of origin story for them. Along with having a better name, Screentime, in my opinion, should be more like a spy. A lot of technology needs internet for communication, and I think he would better as a cyborg. Unoriginal I know, but that’s a better connection than gas. B-Negative, as typical as he is, might just be the only character that can live on from this, of course he’s going to need an obvious name change. And as it was pointed out in the video they should’ve just gave him pure red as a color instead of a shade of it. If he’s goth, a lighter shade makes no sense. And for “Trailblazer”, her body figure could actually be an interesting plot for her. She can take a look at herself and realize that she is no shape to be a hero, so she asks Safe Space to be a trainer. And it would be even more interesting since she looks to be the leader of the team. And yeah, that backpack needs limitations, that part should be pretty simple. And just like with Safe Space, if they want to double down on their choice then they should have it be an evolving thing. Maybe they can even make a story where she gets lost in her backpack and the team has to save her. And out of curiosity, you brought your story before, where can I read it?

It's kind of sad when a Bird who lost to a dog has better Ice powers than the one named Snowflake. Also Safespace reminds of this one joke from Marshal law vs Hellraiser, it was a scene with a buff superhero in WWI and he was so big that he became an easy target. So when a neon pink guy who can't seem to defend himself with his own powers would be impossible NOT to shoot at. "Why is the pink one not in his own force field?" "I don't know....but he's wide open." Like these characters would make the henchmen pity them or question their dumb names and powers. These guys are below Venture Bros and The Tick when it comes to dumb names and powers.

@@Groomsman You can find the ebook on Amazon. It's called Perdita Nightshade: An Errand in Kraken Cove. Keep in mind that I cranked it out in under six months to submit it to a contest Amazon was hosting, so it's by no means flawless. I just needed to prove to myself that I could finally get a book published, so I was successful in that regard. The story is basically the version 1.0 of Perdita Nightshade and the setting in which she lives so there's a lot that's going to change, though the core premise of the character will remain the same. The first chapter of the book is easily the worst, since I didn't have time to go back and change it, so if you can get through that, things will become a lot more interesting. I like all the points you made about the New Warrior characters. The twins are definitely not very well balanced in terms of their powers. Usually, twin superheroes have abilities that are more complimentary, but not these two. I also agree that it would be interesting for Trailblazer to have to get herself into shape for the sake of the team. That would make for a great character arc for her. I doubt it's going to happen, but the potential is still there. Although, just because Marvel misses the opportunity doesn't mean I have to, does it? Perhaps I should have an overweight character in one of my stories who has to get himself or herself into shape for the sake of other people. Food for thought.

@@fandude666 Yeah, but with The Tick, the dumb character names were meant to be dumb. These characters are meant to be taken seriously, but that's impossible, both because of their names and because of how ridiculous their powers are. Safespace is easily the worst because, as you've pointed out, he's an easy target. And once the bad guys realize he can only use his shields to protect other people, they'll take him out to make sure he _can't_ protect them. It's like targeting the White Mage of the party first, since you don't want the White Mage using healing and resurrection spells to bring back other opponents. Actually, being the team medic strikes me as the only useful role that Trailblazer could have, since she could keep medical supplies in her backpack. Of course, she's an even bigger target than Safespace because of her proportions, and those will also make finding adequate cover in a fire fight more difficult, so she might be the first person targeted rather than Safespace. Ugh, the more I think about these characters, the worse they become! I seriously wonder what kind of editors are working at Marvel if characters this imbalanced are getting the green light.

@@patrickleighpresents749 I say the backpack should either be an empty pocket dimension like Link or it's the end of a wormhole, which is why random stuff keeps popping out because she doesn't know where it should end and therefore it chooses a random location in time-space. But once she figures out how to use the location function, then it would make for a good combo between her and B-negative, his vampire strength and her control of the backpack's portal end would give them a huge advantage in long rang fights. No to mention avoiding attacks by making a portal around them and come out of the back pack. Make wormholes awesome again.

There's more diversity in the X-Men than this entire line-up of Deviantart rejects...because real diversity is in differentiating character traits, personalities, motivations and relationships. They felt like individual people, so much so that even years later, characters like Scott Summers, Logan and Jean Grey can be described on an individual basis without once going into their powers, or "what they represent". This line-up of dated teen stereotypes don't feel diverse or varied at all. They all feel like they have the same quirky nature behind their personalities, and are almost solely defined by their power gimmicks or arbitrary birth conditions like race, gender, or sexuality. They are not diverse in character or personality, and therefore aren't diverse at all.
