The main issue with comics are the talent these people choose to hire. They hire people with little to no knowledge of the characters they're writing on top of being completely unable to disassociate themselves from the characters instead of speaking through them. I do personally think that DC had been on a bit of a steady uphill trajectory, though I feel like they've possibly already built up years of bad faith and lost too many customers.

I was never interested in comics, but as a member of Gen Z i can speak on the pandering part. It feels like older generations and corporations view Gen Z like a different subspecies of humans that you have to appeal to in a special way to engage them. Which from my experience is completly not the case. Gen Z for the most part likes the same things as older generations and instead of 10 absurd internet culture references you simply need a good story. Whenever i see something adevrtised "for Gen Z" it feels out of touch and i feel perceived like a child that someone dangles a toy in front of to get their attention, which is quite insulting.

But taking out plot revenant scenes in comics makes no sense especially if you’re going to put the scene in trades anyway. Ether go digital or go paper. This just feels like halfsies. I also feel like comics has allot to learn from Manga in the east. As sails in that has been booming. Even webcomics have picked up popularity. They just need better storytelling and writing. And actually creat story’s and characters that can resonate with both older and younger audiences. Instead of trying to pander and try and identify with younger audiences and trends which makes them look dated. Aka, “What’s up fellow kids?”

I know this is late, but as a Gen Z comic fan I thought throwing my hat in the ring might be helpful. One of the things I really like about comics is the history of it. I think leaning into that, with stuff like the JSA or the Avengers 1/2 issues would be a good. If you didn’t know the JSA is DC’s oldest superhero team which is now focused on having the superheroes of the past train the heroes of the future and the Avengers 1/2 issues were written and drawn in the style of silver age Avengers comics. I think that these are really fun stories and truly enjoy them. Also I don’t 100% believe in this, but apparently people think my generation is really nostalgic for what that’s worth.

Comics will be fine as more and more new faces enter the industry. New heroes and stories that have no connection to the big two with real passion fueling them. The Marvel and dc era is over though. I exist in the comics creator space and one comic floppy can cost upwards of 10K+ to create prior to printing costs. This is probably why the big two are selling them for higher prices. Comics aren't pulling in hundreds of thousands of readers regularly and they need to recoup costs somehow. Industry veteran artists can charge around at minimum 300-500 per Page. This doesn't include writers, letterers, and colorist.

Going from QR codes to Snowflake and Safe Space. That's quite the rant. I don't like the idea of QR codes for one reason. If at one point Marvel decided to stop the project, you run the chance being locked out of that panel or page. Like with games that have online gameplay going offline, Marvel could take the hidden content offline at any moment. This would mean that people should either download these pages if they want to keep their collection complete or buy the Trade Paper Back instead. This could lead to a fall in sales for single issues. One thing fans should do is keep an archive of these extra panels and pages so it will always be accessible, and that is actually the thing that Marvel says they're trying to avoid with this.

Marvel has a bad habit of completely changing the characters in the comics when movies come out, so when fans of the novie come looking for the comic, the character they liktis a completely different person. Even now, they're killing Deadpool and replacing him with his daughter. Same with blade. Captain America, they replaced him with the falcon. Thor, thry replaced with Jane Foster. Hawkeye, they replaced with Kate Bishop. Wolverine, they replaced with X-23. You can find multitudes of these swaps. The even more annoying thing is, some of these replacement characters already had an identity and personality independent of this, but they shoehorned them into these roles.

Marvel might have just lost their entire comicbook collector buyer base with this QR code idea since no collector would ever bother getting a floppy that is incomplete and will forever be like that as 1) a QR code has an expiration date and 2) they decided the pages that shall be kept locked away include ones with important plot points and many characters' 1st appearance. It's a massive loss because Comicbook Collecters will buy a floppy regardless of its quality to keep their collection complete... I have never picked up a comic in my life, but I see that they currently have the same problem as other forms of media: Literally just bad writers. A lot of media nowadays is written by people who have no idea how to write a compelling story or have well thought out, rounded characters. It's a bad sign if the characters shows up and starts explaining everything about themselves (and the stuff they explain isn't anything useful or of interest). It reminds me of how children who are just getting into writing start listing likes and dislikes for their character and list things like "likes: tacos, jumping jacks, good people. Dislikes bad people, pain, spiders".

From what I'm seeing on the sidelines when it comes to comics, there seems to be a weird conflict between making new heroes and churning out the regular cash cow superheroes. This, I feel, leads to a staggering lack of creativity where new and potentially unique heroes must eventually don the cowl and villains of the heroes who came before, as a way to both appeal to new blood and pander to the old audience. A potential solution to this might just be to have a separation between old and new heroes, creating a sandbox of sorts for new creatives to stretch their wings and find their niche, rather than taking old heroes and putting them into ill-fitting stories. It would also be good to toy with stories for all ages, as mentioned in the video. Sometimes people want a brutal battle between good and evil, and sometimes people want a story that's lighter and leans more toward villain of the week stories. Overall, adaptability and flexibility needs to be the name of comics if its going to survive as its own medium.
@kory76983 ай бұрын
That comes from the fact that new heroes are risky whereas Superman and Batman are guaranteed to recoup costs and make a profit. I exists in the comics creative space and One single issue comic costs THOUSANDS to make and there's already a limited audience. A single comic page for just a well established artist can costs 500 dollars. Comic artists typically don't do their own colors so then hiring someone for colors can add an extra few hundred dollars. The you have to pay the writer, editor, letterer.etc etc prior to printing costs which will add thousands. It's not that DC/Marvel don't want to push new heroes but comics are expensive to make with a limited audience. It's just very risky
@michaelpeacock6403 ай бұрын
That's a fair point, which is why my proposed solution from the outside looking in (I have never worked comics in my life) is to have the old heroes as the tried and true formula while the new heroes can be a little more experimental. However, this also assumes older hero comics are selling well which, from what I've seen from isolated examples, can be a bit hit or miss. The Zeb Wells Spider-Man run, for example, made the rounds on Twitter for a long time due to what it did to Spidey, and it seemed to be widely disliked due to what it did to the character, despite the goodwill the name of Spider-Man has. At least from where I'm standing, old heroes can be just as unpredictable when it comes to selling potential, though I would wager that's more down to the writers handling the characters rather than the characters themselves. Due to that, I feel new heroes should still be a risk worth taking, if only to revive and cultivate the creative spark of these companies.

When I was growing up comics were one of my favorite things to have an escapism from reality. Now it’s seems like everything has to be in your face and political. In superhero comics it feels like there aren’t really fighting crime or super villains to thwart. It also seems everyone is becoming an Anti-Hero. It’s one of the main reasons when it comes to comics I mostly read Golden Age, Silver Age, Some Bronze Age and very rarely Modern Age.

That Screentime character only wanted to join the New Warriors because he thought they were the team most likely to 'go viral'. So he's just after clout then? Great morals for a superhero to have....

Not the New Warriors in the thumbnail, a comic that didn't even come out. And to be fair the QR codes are Marvel only.

Americans really only have action superhero comics, do they? I'm glad I live here in Europe where we cover other genres, like comedy, western, adventure, fantasy, slice of life, mystery, magical girl, and many more.
@toganium41753 ай бұрын
I mainly just read DC Comics, but they have all those genres, too.
@kory76983 ай бұрын
We have them but they don't get as much attention. There's only one real comic distributor here and they only push hero comics. Anything that isn't from a well known publisher has to get their approval and if they don't the creators of their book will have to fight to get it to stores. The industry is difficult to get into if you don't have a Marvel, DC, or Image backing you. So you don't see new faces often in shops or comic stores.

Americans can enjoy other genres when they read manga and manhwa (Korean comics), because American comic book WRITERS keep EPIC FAILing at genres other than superhero comics. Those who were successful in other genres, retired DECADES ago.

Was hoping to hear more on the rdj thing, curious what you think about it overall. K agree it seems like nostalgia bait and desperate, but he does seem like a good actor for doom. Could be cool if done right but I'm hesitant for sure...

So I just saw a leak of the new snow white movie. (On youtube) Just a bit of a clip and I thought I have to tell you. Spoilers in case you need to find out for yourself. So the one thing I liked about snow white is that. When she ran from her evil stepmother she went into what she thought was an abandoned cottage. Where she meets the dwarves, in which as compensation for her staying with the dwarves. She offers to clean the house while they are at the mine. Now you'll hear it later I'm sure because it might buzz around a bit. Because it was on youtube. Yet now in the live action she's making the dwarves clean their own house. So she broke into their home, instead of offering compensation she's having them clean up the place for her. Before they go off to work in the mines.

Besides getting 2000AD comics and graphic novels, I stopped buying comics in general back in late 2018, so as far as I'm concerned, comics are dead to me.... modern comics anyway! I'll still buy retro's!

I would love comics to be cheaper because right now I can only really afford one comic per month which makes me really sad when I’m in the comic store and I see a really cool looking comic but I can’t buy it because I’m reading the flash run I live in the uk and almost everywhere I look the comics are £4-5 which is ridiculous when I could buy some actual books for that price. It’s not to bad it’s my choice to keep buying them but this was just a little rant about how much it pains my wallet when I’m checking out my newest flash issue.

Comics have been trash for over a decade now- I remember watching hours of content from various people who were either in the industry or massive fans of it just ripping apart nearly every comic that came out from DC/Marvel for years before losing interest in even that

I have to respectfully disagree. Sure the majority of modern comics are rotten but there are a few gems if you look. I've really been enjoying Spider-Boy for example.

Well lately I been buying new comic books from this year. I had a good time with them but seeing this is sad. QR codes to see an other comic panel is messed up. Also the price is a bit too much because during 2016 I used to buy 4 comic books for a price of $5 dollars. I love seeing Peacemaker in other comic runs, it makes me happy that he is getting included. But yeah I remember those “woke” character that marvel made and I heard the sales for it. I thought comic books can be recover after Covid but seeing this broke my heart as a comic reader/collector.
