Do you notice at the funeral scene Smokey Robinson played himself while the whole movie he was played by an actor. That's how much Smokey loved Melvin

Ummm ... it would have been silly for a near-sixty-year-old Smokey to play himself in his twenties. He played himself at Blue's funeral because that had happened only three years before the movie and I'm sure the producers / director wanted him to sing the song he had written for the movie.

What the movie omitted is that Ruffin crashed Temptation concerts more than once. Eventually, the Temptations did lay off the new singer, Dennis Edwards, with the promise of a solo career and rehired David Ruffin. However, when Ruffin failed to show up for a concert, they permanently kept Edwards as lead singer.

Side note: Melvin (aka Blue) didn't really die in the kitchen like that in real life, and David Ruffin wasn't dumped on the road leading to his death. Also, David's girlfriend Tammi is THE Tammi Terrell who sung with THE Marvin Gaye in "Aint No Mountain High Enough". I truly believe these two were soulmates, but Marvin was married at the time and Tammi was with David. He was hella abusive and from time to time hit her with a hammer (mind you, he was married). Unfortunately, she died in her early 20s from brain cancer. Regarding Melvin's health (the med student is comin out of me), he developed Rheumatoid Arthritis, and covered it up with steroid shots. However, the more steriods you take, the more you weaken your immune system. His immune system was so weak to the point where it opened the flood gates for diseases and health problems to come in easier. Unfortunately, he developed Type 2 Diabetes, then got Necrotizing Fasciitis (dont mess with that heffa!) and had to carry an oxygen tank with him on tour, then apparently was bleeding from his ankle and went into a coma. He died from heart failure at Cedar Sinai, 🤧😭😥. If you can, watch the TVOne show "UnSung" on Tammi and (I think) the Temptations. My least favorite in the group was Eddie because he was tryna play captain save a hoe, but really didn't save Paul at all. One more thing: the intro song in "Friday After Next" was sung by the Temptations. That's THEIR Christmas song lol AND many of the songs in "Four Brothers" are by the Temptations. THAT'S how legendary they arel.

The movie had it wrong. David and Eddie did not join up with three other guys and call themselves the Temptations. They both made solo records through the 1970s before the not-so-successful reunion tour in 1982. After the tour, David and Eddie performed together as Ruffin and Kendrick. After Dennis Edwards left the Temptations a second time in 1988, he, David, and Eddie toured as the former leads of the Temptations.
@TaritaChambers7 күн бұрын
It did happen. The group later became The Temptations Review featuring Dennis Edward's with Otis permission.
@lecuyerdooley10846 күн бұрын
@@TaritaChambers No, it didn't. David and Eddie never performed as the Temptations with three other people who were not actual members of the group. That is made up in the movie. They performed together and later with Dennis Edwards -- that's it. Dennis Edwards was in the Temptations through 1976 and again from 1980-84 and 1987-88, so he could not possibly have performed in a different group of Temptations during the time suggested in the movie. His Temptations Review didn't come along until after the time period of the movie (after Melvin's death in 1995).

David Ruffin really was the greatest temptation during his era as the lead singer. No one had a voice like he did nor left as big of an impact individually outside of Eddie. He Sang lead on A LOT of their greatest hits and some of the greatest songs of all time. His ego was huge, but he really was that golden piece that pushed them to the next level and was viewed as such. This movie makes him look like a straight strung out villain. They all had their problems, even Otis. A lot of people still view him as the best lead singer they ever had. Plz put some respect on his name.

I remember watching this when it originally aired on NBC in 1998 and when it was going to commercial, they will play a few seconds of what the next part of the miniseries will be about. That was the real Smokey Robinson singing at Melvin's funeral, Smokey Robinson also saying a short part of the song during Aretha Franklin's funeral in Detroit back in 2018. Not everything about the Temptations miniseries was accurate, but they got most of it right and it's still a enjoyable mini-series to watch. Yup Otis sued any temptations spin off groups for being called “Temptations Revue” which was about 3 or 4 different ones that splintered off from the 2nd group you see in the series, so the court allowed them to change it to as “(first name and last name of leader of the group) & The Temptations Revue”. Otis and Franklin(Blue) owned the Temptations name since 1976.

Another great reaction! Someone else might've explained it already, but you were right about the copyright issues for two groups performing under the Temptations name! Eventually, there was a dispute about the name; Otis Williams won it and, i believe, owns the name "The Temptations". He's dead now, but there was a 2nd group that Dennis Edwards had that was like "Dennis Edwards and the Temptations Review"...and he couldn't use any other variant of the name, not without his name and not without the word 'review'.

While I do believe that Otis had control issues, he wasn't wrong in replacing group members, even if he didn't want to. Unlike today, labels did not tolerate negative imagery, especially from Black artists. Labels were quick to drop you if the media caught on to anything that could be turned into a scandal. Otis's issue with David was his need to be front & center, attention whore. The movie compresses David's behavior, but in real life it was bad. Eddie was your classic enabler. It didn't matter how bad a person's negative behavior was, he found any reason to excuse their behavior

Yeah! He was right handed and the gun was in his left hand but he used it to shoot himself on the left side of his head. Two shots were fired and the second one got him. But remember! He was drunk! Gun in one hand and bottle of alcohol in the other when they found him. It's still plausible that it could have been self inflicted. You're not exactly the best at aiming when you're drunk. Plus Otis said that Paul had expressing self deleting thoughts to him and Blue months before he died. I get why his friends and family don't want to believe he would do that to himself. No one ever wants to believe their loved one would do that but to me it seems pretty clear what happened. That's just my take on it.

The group was together for years n literally had no major success. The moment David joins the group they have instant success. In David's mind he has every right to act like a Diva and to ensure they be David Ruffin and the temptations.
@lecuyerdooley10846 күн бұрын
Well, no. David Ruffin was a phenomenal talent without question. However, he needed the Temptations just as much as they needed him. He never had a hit before he joined them either. And once he left, despite his talent, he struggled to score hit records. He believed that he was the key to the Temptations success, but he wasn't. With the right songwriters and producers, the Temptations soared.
