So sorry for your loss. However it was VERY informative and if you got 500m distance that's GREAT! I've got really short range on my Bugs 3 so I'm tempted to crack the tx case and try your mod. There are some really inexpensive FPV systems out there. I've got a TX832 transmitter coming that I'm going to pair on my Xiaomi Yi 1080p action cam on my XK X380. Regardless, GREAT video and it'll be a big help to the rest of us.

I thought about that too - an all in one storage/launch pad case - you could use your case as a launch pad as well - keeping essentials accessible from the side possibly and maybe add a tiny level gauge to level the case - consider making it just a bit smaller and a way to accommodate roughly other same size drones and flight assessories - B

Safe way to determine the limit of range. Enlist a friend. Get the drone above ground level on anything that's non metallic. Get it ,started, props idling. Then either run or walk away with the RC - give the quad a quick squirt of revs to keep it connected - every 5 or 10 metres at a guess. Keep doing that until you find it no longer responds. Then approach again doing the same thing. You'll need level ground with zero obstructions. It won't give quite as far as if the quad's in the air but there is zero risk of losing it or crashing it. But with a bugs 3 you do need to keep it connected or it'll stop the props again. Worth a try?

a good 5.8ghz fpv set up is the txo3 or dvr03 they are both great fpv cameras and you can record on the dvr03. i use a 500mah 1s Lipo that directly powers my camera on the quad

UuRai in my non-expert opinion the extra weight can actually be a good thing for the bugs stability. it's always windy where I am and so I find myself flying with my action cam even if I'm not recording.

If the quad had props spinning fast enough to keep it aloft at "zero Idle", how would you land? You can't have both, That's why they are only idling at zero throttle, any more and you'd have to wait until the battery died before landing, rather messy.

Sorry to hear you broken your Bugs, I just burned out and ESC or possibly motor in my Bugs 3, though I have been fortunate to have racket up probably around 100 hours flight time. Just a suggestion for your next range test, put the quad in a secure place or with a friend and walk the distance with your controller. Record the distance when the low signal warning starts and then the distance that the signal is lost. You will then have an accurate range for low signal warning and for total loss of signal! You also keep your quad safe :-) Cheers!

good video. Does the original weak signal alarm work with the new long range antenna?? you can test it by powering up the drone and tx as per normal and then disconnect the drone battery and see if the tx alarm goes off beeping continously..

Oh - yes, it does work. Once the drone goes beyond 150-200 meters you may hear beeps every now and then.

What I would really like to know is how much furthur can it travel once the low signal alarm sounds before it loses signal completely and falls from the sky. EG- alarm sounds at 200 M , can it fly to 300M before total signal loss and it falls.

That's an age old problem, beefing up the TX and RX and then discovering you can't see the damn thing due to being too far away. You say it'll be better when you fit FPV gear, but what makes you think your FPV is going to work at that range. Your FPV will always drop out before your flight range because whilst you may have more output fro the Video TX it's sending a lot more data and because you need that extra power to receive a watchable picture it's usually the first to drop out. At some point you end up chasing your own tail, because it's only a small quad, you have to keep all the FPV components equally small. Once you start adding more output power for video you're also going to need a bigger battery and to carry a bigger battery you need bigger motors and to fit bigger motors you need a better frame. Before you know it, you may as well buy a bigger quad. RC can be a cruel world at times, but we keep trying.

you definitely need an FPV system my friend, at great distances you cant tell the orientation of the quad, so crashing is inevitable, sorry to see you snapped an arm, I also have a bugs 3 and made an fpv system with tft monitor and 200mw receiver on the bugs

Very diplomatic reply friend. My sincerest apologies for the condescending crack at your box construction. Still...your box would make a convenient launch and landing pad. Maybe add some landing markers and some improvised telescopic windsock to add to your design. That way you remove the drone from the case, close the lid and you would simply set the drone on top of the box to launch and not need to walk away several feet to find a level launch pad. Your good2go quite literally "out of the box" as it were. Thanks for the video and the tech lesson. Ive subscibed.

James, thanks a lot! In fact this "box project" was on of my first here. It certainly is far away from being good, but at least helped me carry the bugs which is relatively big. Thanks a lot for the ideas - that was indeed the idea of the box too but ... well - the drone is still broken. Among the many revisions of parts I was unable to find an esc rev. 01 and now if I want to fix it I need a new flight board + 4 new escs and just decided to use it as spare parts for the bugs 2. I certainly hope that following the channel will bring value to you. As usual I am open to ideas and critics :-) Have a wonderful day, man!

Ifeel for you.I just broke the arm off my JYU HORNET S because a drunk friend of mine grabbed it while it was hovering and when he let go of it,it caused it to blast off ,turn and hit the ground at about 30 mph.I guess it messed with the GPS or something else in the electronics.

Thanks Brian! Yeah, I wanted to mount such, but the structure of the box was not good enough :( I ended buying a DJI Phantom bag that was a kind of fine for the bugs :-) Bit more expensive but better looking and more compact.

Michal, I am terribly sorry to hear about that. I have tried using glue - Bison Epoxid. It glued the parts and it was good for one drop. On the next drop - you can see on the video :-) I don't really think to do it again as it apparently is not strong enough. A friend here told that using a soldering station you may try to melt down the plastic and then cover it in epoxid glue. It is, it is :-) But having such a mod makes you feel like you can go very far away and when that happens you can easily lose control due to the reduced visibility. If you have no gps or FPV - better stay with the stock and don't break your drone like me :-) I am still waiting for the rest of the spare parts.

None of these phones supports 5ghz band. And as far as I remember the b2w is strictly working on 5ghz band. So you should either get a 5ghz compatible phone or not use the wifi. You can still use the camera via recording to a microsd card.

The drone is high enough, so there was no need for that. Because the camera frame stays pretty low you have the feeling there's too much grass. But overall it wasn't that bad. Thanks for the suggestion anyways.

Красимир Гергененов За съжаление имам опит .Моя го счупих малко по тежко на 3 ти или четвърти полет.Една от батериите в трансмитера не издържа на ниската температура.Дрона падна и се счупи малко по лошо от твоя. След по горе описаната процедура имам поне 40 полета и едно падане от 50мт .за мое щастие на склон и оцеля.Иначе съм си поръчал и пристигна карбонов фрейм за всеки случай. Ще се радвам ако съм бил полезен.По принцип не е добре да се правят експерименти за макс рейндж на дрон без GPS. Поздрави

It has no restrictions on the firmware level and it all depends on the transmitter and area you are flying at. Some people have managed to reach 500+ meters.

Honestly, I wouldn't risk breaking my GoPro on a drone without GPS and Altitude hold. But - yes, it can do that. Just be VERY careful :-)

Hey David, thanks for the ideas given. Well - the box was not that good at that point, and the mechanism for keeping it closed was not keeping it at a steady level, so I was not able to use it as surface to take off from. I abandoned this project and modified a box for Phantom to do that. As for the music - yeah... :D Well - people learn.
