I am mentioning this not to be a plonker but just to point you in a direction. When I renovated my Mk1 I was looking at a Type 2, Type 9, or MT 75 to replace the standard Lurpak 4 speed gearbox. But after looking at the DVLA VHI guidance, (Vehicle of Historic Interest), about "Substantial Changes" I contacted DVLA. They said that such a change would have other related changes required, such as, prop-shaft alterations, possible monocoque manipulation, clutch operation modification, which would together constitute a "substantial change" to the "drive train and running gear". Like I say, I am not trying to be a dick, I just wouldn't want to see a problem arise in the event of an accident where if your insurers, who have become very savvy about VHI substantial changes, sees a possible undeclared substantial change that they walk away and don't want to pay out. I would advise getting a paper trail in place with DVLA and the insurers to cover yourself. Oh by the way, for VHI "Guidance" read, DVLA get out of jail free word, but we will screw you if we want to.

It might mean I can't register as a VHI which I'm not currently anyway but it shouldn't stop me using the cortina as a car but I have to get annual MOT's which I do anyway.

@@jimbuilds OK, I would hate to see you have a problem after all your hard work because of an administrative error. But don't forget that if you don't register it as a VHI you will still have to pay VED/RFL at the rate when you come to use it as only VHI's are exempt. Some people think that because their car is over 40 yrs old it is VED/RFL exempt, it has to say "historic vehicle" on you V5 before it can be exempt. If the Dibble stop you and it is not registered as a VHI technically they can report you for no VED/RFL. Anyway, good luck with the rest of the project and I may see you out on the road one day and we can start a Mk1 convoy. Drive careful.

@@mdf2mdf287 I'm going off what the DVLA site says regarding substantial changes within the last 30 years. it's focussed on annual road worthiness testing (MOT) but wouldn't affect the road tax. There's similar documentation regarding heavily modified vehicles which the Cortina doesn't fall under which would be IVA/ SVA which could mean reregistration and that would lose it's tax exemption status. When I've got the mechanicals sorted she'll be off for an MOT and I'll go from there - should be soon hopefully!
