Always tack so if it's not right you can fix it , other than that looks good , at first glance I thought you were working on a model A Ford
@jimbuilds10 күн бұрын
You're right about tacking it i would have made some bigger problems if I had fully welded it. I don't know much about the model A - I'll have a look into them though!

Jim, Do yourself a favor and pin the individual intake manifolds to the head after you get them aligned to your liking. This will allow you to remove and replace them, getting them repeatable with each time you need to make adjustments. Fought this issue with my Lotus Super 7 back in the 60's. Makes for a quick on and off without have to make additional adjustments upon re-assembly.
@jimbuilds11 күн бұрын
It's funny you mentioning that Robert as i recently noticed the manifolds have been drilled in the middle of the flange already. Having tried to align them as is i can tell it'll be tricky! I'd love a super 7, i keep thinking about building a replica and keeping it 1500.

Glad to see you sort that number 1 pipe out jim,think you would have hated it if you had left it the way it was,nice to build your own exhausts,because everything's expensive nowadays, but they are a pain,but if you get it right,its worth the hassle, keep pushing forward buddy
@jimbuilds13 күн бұрын
@andymallinson9447 thanks Andy! I feel better for sorting number 1 as it didn't look right and was in the way of 2 and 3. I feel properly motivated to get on with it now I've got this far. 👍

Looks great, I was thinking of doing something similar with my Datsun when I get the chance, similar non-crossflow engine so I'll run into the same clearance issues!
@jimbuilds13 күн бұрын
Thank you! Definitely give it a go. If i had to do it again I would look at pie cuts rather than pre made bends as they haven't saved me time or money. Having enough parts to mock it all up helps but the datsuns have plenty of engine bay space like the cortina so you should be good to go!
@jakethepeasant13 күн бұрын
@jimbuilds I've found pie cuts quite time consuming in the past, but definitely the cheaper and more flexible option! I reckon I'll make use of some mandrel bends at least just because it means less of my shoddy welding 😂

Thanks Ben. I am, at the moment I'm thinking about how I could mount its and I think it'll be off the back plate for the airbox that I'll make at some point. As I'll be running an air temp meter for the ecu I'll be able to get an idea of what improvements a shield would make.

I use autodesk inventor 2024, you can use the same functions i used on fusion 360. As for converting to an STL it's really straightforward. You just exporting it, there are options for other cad file formats etc but it's easy to do.

Interesting set up. In my past life working with instruments, you will normally find gauges are calibrated to show correct reading in there midrange. When testing compressed air and a regulator would replace the hydrolic pump and oil. Had 30 years with the almighty Mk 1 GT Cortina some from the early 60's with the 3 x 4inch gauge cluster on the dash. Loved them cars, rebuilt many.
@jimbuilds22 күн бұрын
Thank you, it makes sense about operating range as 50 to 80 psi looked like they're the most accurate from 70 which barely moved. I hadn't considered the use of compressed air, it's worth knowing though. 👍 Do you still have a mk1?

Lucky man! Not only do you have an oil pressure sender unit (super rare), you have one that actually works (ultra rare)! The ones we came across back in the day were faulty, so in the end we swapped the electric gauge for a live one. Found a gauge that matched the others reasonably well. These aren't Swiss quality instrument by any stretch of the imagination,. so if you're within 10% that's as good as it ever gets (if not better)! 👍

I'm still amazed considering its age, it's not my first sender unit but that's for a story coming up soon!

You're right, I've tried vinegar but after a day or two it's like sludge and it stinks the place out!

I stumbled across this when looking for 3D printed exhaust ideas. I would want the exhaust primaries to turn down immediately and allow room for a heat shield to keep the intake manifold cooler.
@jimbuilds28 күн бұрын
Since I made this video I have made a few adjustments which give the manifolds some more clearance. I have space for either a shield or heat wrap which helps.

The steering idler still needs room to operate in so factor that in as you don't want the manififold fouling. Not much room in that area.for error. Will look forward to updates

I think I'll be ok, I based the new manifold on the original which clears. The only thing I've been wary of is the relocated starter motor but that's tucked away nicely too. I'll have an update ready in a few days all being well!

@jimbuildsАй бұрын
I haven't added those in on the manifold as the exhaust is the opposite side to the steering box but you're right to question it if they're on the same side to each other. If you need any help and advice when you work on the Thames just ask.👍 Please tell your Mrs I said thank you, I don't think anyone has complimented me on my aura so I'm honoured! 😊

The Capri engine I rebuilt as close to an Allard dragon engine, save for a duplex timing gear. I put steel rocker posts on it but makes it a bit noisier so probably going to go for roller rockers..I still have the odd bit on The Allard stuff. Legendary! Good luck, look forward to updates
@jimbuilds2 ай бұрын
@rancidschannel3206 you have allard parts?! I'd be interested in hearing more about your builds. That's the other part I need to improve- the rocker gear. I think I'll keep the rockers but go steel shaft and posts.

I was going to supercharge like the Allardette Anglia I had.. But the C142B cargers are hard to find. And the inlet manifold even more so. I found one once is so rare. I found one on ebay once for £350, nearly bought it. Should of. But what about those crummy electric chargers for a low.boost? Seems if its probably too easy it probably is! Just remember though the old rule. What you change at the top, change at the bottom..On a 1500 block I would be looking at steels mains caps at least especially if you have the rare 122E engine. Worth checking the number on top of the engine mount as the 122E has slighly less support on the mains, having a roundes edge on the journal, not fully supported.The 122E engines are sought after for heritage racing but are rare because unless remidied they failed. You may not be altering the power, but the fuel is now pressurised. Not sure if you put steel mains caps on it allready, but I would advise it.
@jimbuilds2 ай бұрын
The alardette is a cool car, I have some articles on that build somewhere. I did find a guy in derby with the right inlet manifold and a c75b but as you've said its too small! I did think of using the mini m45 but have currently decided against it. I have a set of steel mains caps waiting to go in whichever block I use, I'd love to find a 122e but I'll have more chance finding rocking horse teeth! 😆 I'd like a set of steel rods too but we'll have to see!
