Looks so good. We had a few Mk1 and Mk2s when I was a kid so I have a soft spot for UK Fords. Don't worry about lock washers in the sump. It's been proven that lock washers do not in fact provide any real locking ability once they are torqued down anyway. You are much safer with thread locker which is what pretty much all manufacturers use now.
@performanceclassics1986

Thanks James. I always try to lock bolts in anyway possible. I often wonder just how effective thread lock is at hot engine temperatures, but as you say all top car manufacturers use it so it must be ok.

Very informative.I also run ST170. Make sure you run it on Lucas oil. And you won't have any problems.

Is the oil pump you’ve used from Burton listed as a zetec E? I’m struggling to find parts for an st170 engine on Burton.
@performanceclassics1986
@performanceclassics1986 4 жыл бұрын
chris muirhead It is Chris. I know that struggle very well. Ive had a nightmare with certain parts in particular a cambelt kit. If you ring Burton and tell them you want the oil pump for the ST170 then they will send you the right one as they are the same as a silver top zetec. The crank oil seal it comes with is a very poor fit though as both myself and Marcus Hayes have found out. Im going to order another seal tomorrow as its a very loose fit and cause leaks.

There is an adapter that positions the oil filter pointing straight down. No mess when you change the filter. Also, if you are interested, there is an oil to water heat exchanger that fits between the adapter/filter/block. Warms the oil quickly and keeps it at a constant temperature.
@performanceclassics1986
@performanceclassics1986 4 жыл бұрын
Robert Walker Thanks for the msg Robert. I do like the sound of the oil filter facing downwards. Where would i get these adapters?? Im also now thinking that i will fit a water to oil cooler as ive heard some ppl saying that an air cooled oil cooler can often cool down the oil too much 👍
@robertwalker9638
@robertwalker9638 4 жыл бұрын
@@performanceclassics1986 The adapter is from a Ford Mustang 5.0L and available from Summit Racing in the US. The water to oil cooler is a Ford factory unit that I found on RockAuto.com in the US. Running both units on my 2L Zetec in my Lotus Elan Plus2. My friend has a Mk1 with a BDA, and it appears there is enough room for both. One more thing. What I don not like about the RetroFord water rail is: it mounts the rail directly above the exhaust and eliminates the dual path thermostat, which routs the water through the block and head until the thermostat opens and closes of that path and opens up the water path through the radiator. Almost instant warm up, with out causing hot spots in the cylinder head. Just more stuff for your mind to rap around.

Robert Walker Thanks Robert, ive took a screenshot of this message as there is some useful info in there. 👍 To be honnest the retro ford water rail is probably the only one retro ford part i have that i think could be better. Its big and bulky and ive seen other water rails that are a much nicer design but some of these are hard to come by. Thanks for the above info. Much appreciated.

Not to put a downer on what you done, spot on, but you'll probably have to remove the water rail to fit the exhaust, it's a tight fit, however I cannot recommend the retroford sump, put my on 5years ago and still as good the day it went on, interesting how you put the dipstick on exhaust side, I know they fit either side, I went inlet..keep up the great work, 👍

taffy mk1 Thanks for the message. The Sump looks a great piece of kit and if fit really well to be honest. Nice and tight at all the mating faces. Yes i think i will need to move the dipstick to the other side as im pretty sure the starter motor will be in the way as it is so il probably end up moving it to the inlet side. Im happy to remove the water rail pipe if i need to. Thanks for the msg. It was good to hear that your sump has been good 👍

@performanceclassics1986
@performanceclassics1986 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks very much. No, I don’t think fitting the ST head to a pinto block would be very easy at all. I think The Cosworth heads fit the pinto block but the ST 170 engines are basically a zetec and are very different to the pinto blocks. It might be able to be done, but with a lot of engineering I would imagine.

It’s going to be a lovely car when is finished . Do you have to cut the pipe of the back of the rocker cover to miss the fire wall ? Did you have to change the gearbox tunnel and the fixing of the gearbox to the car . Good job 👍🏻
@performanceclassics1986
@performanceclassics1986 4 жыл бұрын
Oz Brick Oz Brick Thanks for your message. Yes the rocker cover pipe is a job i still need to do. I will blank it off and move the pipe into the side of the cover. The type 9 gearbox does fit the standard tunnel pretty well without too many mods. I did have to move the selector hole back around 80-100mm and i also moved the gearbox mounts back to align with the gearbox mount on the type 9. Other than that there were no more mods required.

Have you done a video of how you’ve done the oil breathing on the car pal ? Can’t see to find what’s the best way to do it in an mk1.
@performanceclassics1986
@performanceclassics1986 Жыл бұрын
Hello Chris, yes I did cover it in 1 video but can’t remember which one. I’ve basically just fitted the original zetec breather box with a small cone filter fitted and fitted another small filter onto the cam cover on the left hand side, where the baffle plate is fitted to the underside of the cam cover. This seams to work really well with no issues to report. Some people run both to a catch tank but so far I haven’t had to fit a catch tank.
