The legendary Mk12 Mod 0 SOCOM rifle paired up with the venerable Mk262 Mod1 ammunition.
Questions that we answer with this video:
-Is the BCM or PRI variant better?
-How does issued Mk262 Mod1 ammunition compare to IMI Razor Core 77gr, MagTech 77gr Match and Hornady Black 75gr?
-Does the AEM-5 suppressor have any effect on the rifle's point of impact/ group size?
Strap in. It's the longest review we've done to date, but we hope you find it useful.

We again emphasize that we run 9-shot groups, so the size is larger than 5-shot groups. We do this so that we can have a better idea on where the rifle places shots under the stress of (reasonably) sustained fire. This matters the most when we are shooting multiple targets at long distances.

Want smaller groups and a more accurate test? Improve the quality of the target stands and use a rigid target backer. The wind will move the target more than the bullet. If the target moves between shots, the group is a waste of ammo. The stand needs to be cross braced front to back and left to right and the uprights need rigid spacers top and bottom. I like to use polypropylene sign material behind the target rather than cardboard. Use light tack spray adhesive to hold target to backer or tape all the way around edges with painter's tape.

Rem 700 Aac sd .308 , My little SPR-ish Project , and even a few surplus rifles that once hitting the 7th and 8th shot , show a POI shift but still group. Also cant wait for that mosin review. Its practical , but not the greatest design. If you ever get the chance , you would be shock how different the various models shoot. Older 91/30 hex rifle that have their fit and finish will shoot worse than some 91/30 of the war era. Ive seen M44 shoot better than 91/30s even tho the sight radius and velocity are shorter. And of course the Mosin (snipers) and Finish VKT M39s can show some great feats of accuracy .

Great review. Huge bump for Magtech. I had no idea that Magtech was a serious contender when it comes to match grade ammunition. About 8 years ago, I have built a clone of a Mk 12 mod 1 upper with Noveske ss barrel. It still does 3/4 MOA even after 1400 rounds. I am not sure that Noveske even offers barrels in that profile. Good stuff, love your reviews.

They not always from lowest bidder. I see they use quite top end stuff like Leupold scope for Mk12 and now they use Schmidt & Bender for new m110a1. If they choose lowest bidder the whole army would end up with Hipoint carbine with 30$ chinese scope.

The truth is that there is a fine line where you CAN get the best of both.... but it is a very fine line. It is no different than a race car, plane, musical instrument or even medicine. It’s a fact of life. You CAN have both, but you REALLY have to work for it!
@USN1985dos

I think that's debatable on what you consider a "good thing." I purchase AR's and other tactical-style rifles on the presumption that the only time I'll ever really need them will be when a situation is dire; whether that be due to multiple armed intruders on my property, civil unrest, or societal collapse. In that event, I don't really care if a gun is "one MOA" or if the trigger has a crisp clean break. What I care about is that it will be reliable, reasonably accurate, and rugged. Those are essentially the same criteria that the military uses when designating "mil spec," which is why most of my rifles are either inspired by, or clones, of the weapons used by the armed forces. Sure, there are areas where you can make some useful enhancements, like an ambidextrous charging handle or safety, but on the whole, I'd much rather a Colt/BCM with Daniel Defense RIS II rails over a boutique, high-performing, precise rifle that costs $2,500 but is more susceptible to damage and degradation.

I bought a Eagle Arms "Golden Eagle" DCM gun back in the day that would shoot 69/77 Sierra's MOA all day long out to 600 yds. Even with my Stoney Point gauge using Sierra 80's the bullet would fall out of the neck the throat was so shot out, the gun would still shoot. I went to Camp Perry one year and was going to have the AMU truck 'float' the barrel when they said they couldn't and it wouldn't be worth doing it. The secret was the stainless steel truck axle that Eagle Arms used. I am not impressed with those groups.

I think 5-shots are valuable for working loads. It is unfeasible to shoot such high round counts for load dev.. however to clock a rifle and know what you'd be expecting on the longer distances, the high round count groups are worth their weight in gold.

Just a thought on the group strings,bipod load.From the looks of it the vertical dispersion could be attributed to shooting off a pack without consistently being able to load the same into the stock.I know alot of the guys use and shoot off packs religiously but when youre looking for repeatedly grouping a round bipod load shows almost 100% of the time in a vertical string of holes.

I have no complaints about your reviews. My humble observation is that the combination of the excellent shooting skills, combined with "custom loads" in many applications, matched with some pretty esoteric gear makes some of the reviews a little out of the realm of usable by the "common shooter". I qualified as Expert" in US Army BCT and went onto Sniper training, so I appreciate just how good the shooting is in your reviews...but at times the technical discussions are a bit out of the capabilities of anyone but the most expert shooters. Great video, great reviews...Thanks for making this available even if it's far beyond my abilities.

I built an almost duplicate MK12 mod 0 kind of what I used in the ARMY I don't have the Allen engineering suppressor I have the Silencerco Hybrid. The ammo I use is the Magtech 77gr and I can get half moa out of it. The Magtech ammo with my rifle set up is an awesome set up for deer hunting.

Shows that every rifle has its own preference on ammunition. I had a small part in developing this rifle while in 5th SFGA in the 90s. Good system but always a stopgap system till we got enough 7.62mm semi auto sniper rifles.

im almost finished with my current build. SPR Mk12 Mod1 built by HIgh Caliber Sales. Lower is built by myself with a CMC 2 stage drop in trigger and Sierra AR15 grip. i will post numbers and pictures as soon i i get this running 100% and ready to rock...temporary optic is the Vortex strikefire 1-8x on an aero ultra litewight scope mount. i would say its a clone but it was built by the guys who made it for Crane and SOCOM...ver y good to seal with also, always ansered my 75 million questions

I agree that the difference between IMI brown box and color box. The Razor core is the most affordable 77gr ammo out there. Midway USA will sale it for $.48 on some holiday season. When people question 5.56 accuracy and ability for long range, I normally pull out my MK12 Mod1, let them play, and they will be surprised. Great video as always!!

Most of the guys complaining about your large group size only shoot 3 shot groups. I have a clone using the Aero SPR 1/8 twist rifle, and it shoots 1.2" 10 shot groups ALL DAY with Black Hills 77gr and 1.75" with Federal Black box XM193. I'm very happy with it. Especially since I uave $950 in the entire rifle. And its easy to shoot to 700 yards.

I've had similar results in terms of what ammo my BCM likes...I've shot everything from federal XM193 to Hornady 75gr superformance match and by far the best groups have been with magtech 77gr. I've always been able to maintain a sub MOA 5-shot group with the magtech if I do my part. Some of the other stuff (especially hornady...she didn't like hornady at all) has been in the 1.5-2moa...from a 5 shot...

Nice comparison between the two big names in the MK12 market. In regards to shooting suppressed; I see similar improvements in accuracy with my Surefire SOCOM RC 556 suppressor. It has the same effect on all the rifles I run it on. SCAR16, Tavor, MK18, and a 14.5 lightweight BCM barrel. I run the PRI Gasbuster charging handle to. But the the number 1 thing you can do to reduce ammonia gas is run the gun CLEAN, AND DRY. And get used to cleaning after every session. The dirty brass is tell-tale to running suppressed. So if I don’t intend to expend all the rounds in a magazine, I won’t load it to capacity. I hate the idea of carbon covered rounds corroding in a magazine for duty use.

Don’t know why but the combat footage from Iraq and Afghanistan in the 2000’s; especially the early 2000’s really fascinates me. I guess it’s because I remember seeing clips of footage on the news as a child and being awe struck by such a far off, strange place where US soldiers were fighting.

You should be using CEP (Circular Error Probability at 50%) or Mean Radius, not Group Size. For the example, the U.S. Military's M24/M110 standard is 0.6 MOA CEP. In my testing I also use 10-shot (pretty close to 9-shots) and I get similar group sizes with 77gr ammo (Black Hills 223, Black Hills 5.56, PMC SMK) of 1.6" to 2.7". But the CEP's are 0.54 MOA to 1.1 MOA. CEP is unaffected by number of shots. The more shots you make, the more accurate the CEP measurement.
@9HoleReviews

Is there a video or a website outlining that? I'd like to learn more.

@@9HoleReviews ballistipedia.com is a great introduction. I use Range Buddy (Android App) to measure the CEP. I found your FB page, and I'll PM you some data I've collected. Your KZbin channel is awesome, easily the most informative for me when I started getting serious about rifle shooting last year. A lot of people have opinions with NO DATA, but you collect REAL DATA before sharing your opinion. I also like your "skits", especially the one about your "cousin from HK" in your Dragunov video. I was laughing like crazy because it reminded me of the 2 years I lived in Mainland China (2015-2017).

Wow i have much different results with my mk12 PRI. I've had my PRI upper since like 2014 and it shoots any ammo under 1.5 inches at 100, shoots the black Hills 77gr mk262s like half inch if you do you're part.

One thing I would like to point out about the Magtech 77gr OTM is that it's significantly cheaper than the other options tested. I recently purchased 200rds from Outdoorlimited for only $0.56 a round, cheapest I've ever seen the other 77gr OTM loads priced at is maybe $0.70 per round. Yes, the Magtech is an economical offering that's still yet cheaper than even the PPU options out there. They must of passed onto the consumer any savings received from choosing to use a simplistic cardboard box per box of 50rds to house their product. Those other companies must spend a fortune on all plastic/synthetic containers from which they choose to place their expensive "match grade" rounds within. Anyways, great video! You're making content that's not only actually worth watching, but also very informative....that's rare on KZbin!
