Fun fact about this particular car: I actually owned this car before the current owner owned her and she was an absolute joy to drive. I purchased the car as a 1.6 automatic golf driver but preferred the manual gearbox so with my dads knowledge and his skill In 40 odd years in the trade, he was able to convert it from auto to manual. The Weber carb you see is another add on that my dad fitted himself we did know it wasn’t set up correctly but I was just so excited to drive her again, definitely did make a difference from the pier burg carb which was in it prior. So nice to see her being looked after and being appreciated as much as I did in the time I owned her. 👍🏻 Good job by way on getting her run smoothly and better than ever!!

Great to see you looking after a none GTI model. One of these with a base 1.8 carb motor taken out to 1.9, makes a car that can embarrass a standard GTI.

Mixture is straightforward. Get the engine nice and warm. Then wind the mixture screw in until it misses, then wind back out anti clockwise and listen to the revs rise, the optimal point is the revs just at their peak. If you keep going the revs will fall again. Once you find the peak. Turn it back in a half turn, to pull the emissions down. Or you can leave that until mot time!

Depending on its condition it could vary but in the region of 1200-1500 but its hard to say, you could offer less and get a bargin

Hi, I'm running the same set-up on my 1.8 but on slight throttle the cars seems to stutter a little. I was wondering if changing the primairy idle jet to 1 step bigger, 55 to 57 would make a difference. vacuum & timing are right.

Have you adjusted the basic mixture yet as this may help, if it doesn't then may be time to re-jet and adjust

Hey mate I have a question about the ignition timing. I have the 1.6 with a Weber too. If I understand correctly ignition timing should be at 17-19 degrees without the vacuum advance unit disconnected. I have always set my timing by aligning the gearbox housing arrow with a little notch in the flywheel, assuming that's the correct BTDC point (I don't have a timing light with an advance function). However you mentioned a sort of machined flat spot which is what you set the timing to in this video. Might it be that the notch I set my timing to is for 6 degrees BTDC which is the required timing for all other mk2s? Since the 1.6 seems to be the only one that needs a 17-19 degree BTDC and now I'm not sure whether I have my timing correctly. Car's been running a bit sluggish lately

Yes 17-19 degress with the vacuum pipe connected. The TDC dot is 36mm to the right of the diamond. The diamond is 18 degrees BTDC So if you have no advance function on your timing light then you want to be getting the diamond marker lined up with the gearbox pointer at idle, that will be 18 degrees, however if your vacuum advance on the dizzy isn't working your have issues, suck on the line that goes to the dizzy, if you can draw air through it then its failed.

@@GreyGooseRestorations thanks for taking the time to reply. In that case I have been setting my timing correctly, and the vacuum unit still works as far as I can tell, so my issue is probably caused by something else. I suspect the distributor or carb since it started right around the time it got colder too. Feels like the engine is either almost flooding itself while driving very intermittently which makes me think the carb is running too rich or the ignition is failing altogether for a split second. Just kinda goes against my instinct that the carb running rich would suddenly be an issue as it gets colder, usually cold weather could benefit from running a bit richer right?

It could be the carb mixture needs a tweek as the weather is starting to get colder

You set your timming gun to 17deg? And then you set timming trough gearbox housing? Or gun have to be set at 0 deg?

How much is consumption with this carb! And its beter this 32/34 weber our 32/32 dmtr weber?
@GreyGooseRestorations
@GreyGooseRestorations Жыл бұрын
If set up correctly you most likely won't notice to much difference in mpg but it will be slightly less than stock. Both carbs will work however the 32/34 is the common replacement

Hey I’ve recently bought a mk2 scirocco with a 1.6 carb engine like yours. I bought a 32/34 and some guy set it up for me. But I’ve some problems with my ignition time. Some guys says that it’s 0° and you seem to say that it should be 18. Is your engine same as mine ? Lastly, I tried to set it up with 0° with the flashgun and it runs like a potato, and make pops and bang. Can you help me?

The 0 or the dot marking is your TDC so once its running and the timing light is lining up with that 0, advance the timing light to 18 degrees then move the distributor body untill the timing light is lining up with the 0 This is then set at 18 degrees BTDC 16-20 degrees on 98 ron fuel 12-14 degrees with 95 ron fuel
