Hi Mitch, looks like you have an English axle there so happy days! You may need to measure the rear drums as standard Escorts had 8 inch and Sport / Ghia / RS had 9 inch drums. Regarding the diff ratio, all you need to do is to count the teeth on the larger crownwheel then divide it by the teeth on the smaller pinion. It will either give you 4:41 (1100cc or van-very revvy) 3:89 (1300cc - ideal all rounder) 3:77 (mk1 mexico - ideal) or 3:54 (Ghia/Sport/RS for longer legs on motorways) I have the same setup as you with a 3:89 diff and a plated LSD, cruises nicely and still will get the back end out easily with a few revs! Would avoid welding it though as that can break halfshafts easier. May be worth getting some new single decambered leaf springs too if you can as they are uprated in strength and you won't need lowering blocks. The washers you found go on top of the lowering blocks to locate them. Great video fella, reminds me of being 17 back in the early 90s doing the same with the old rave music on 😂 Cheers, Neil.

Ah yes about time the escort came back. Only reason I watch your videos

Hi Matt, looks like a standard English Adel and diff, some have the number of teeth stamped on the crown wheel and pinion. Divide the crown wheel teeth by pinion teeth to get your ratio. If they aren't marked just count them.

Weld a drain plug onto the bottom of the axle for future maintenance wish I had done it to mine 👍🏻

Wow brave decision to stick with beige colour. Same as your Grandad 😊 car
@_Brad_DАй бұрын
A good fast road set up for that axle would be a 3.77:1 crownwheel & pinion, LSD, 9" drum brakes, single leaf springs, uprated shocks & anti-tramp bars. keep your 2" lowering blocks unless you used decambered leaf springs which incorporate a lowered stance. The axle ratio would depend on how you intend to use the car. With a standard 5-speed box, you'll have a slightly overdriven 5th gear and a low 1st gear, so 3.77:1 will give you reasonable motorway cruising and decent acceleration. 3.9:1 or 4.1:1 will give better acceleration but a bit revvy at motorway speeds.

Nice work Mitch , you have an English axle there mate which is good , if I was you I would sell your anti roll bar and fit some tramp bars they are brackets you weld on the axle and the rear chassis and a bar in between on both sides as fitted to standard rs’s , with your 2.1 pinto without these your axle will be wanting to tramp (forward and backwards) with all that power they are easy to fit always here to help any questions mate 👍🏻
@hoggmotorsportАй бұрын
Hi mate, as other comments its definitely an English axle. I would recommend fitting the RS style anti tramp bars instead of the anti roll bar, and a plated lsd. Check out the diff ratio as others have described. I would also use Cunifer brake pipe instead of copper 👌👍

Well done Mitch - glad to see you back on the Escort - I was in danger of catching you up with mine!!
@leeevans4635Ай бұрын
Count the crown wheel teeth and divide the amount of pinion teeth into it will give your diff ratio👍 For example 35 CW teeth divided by 10 pinion would give 3.5 ratio 40 divide by 9 4.44

To my best knowledge... Yes i stand to be corrected.. 4:11 is 1100/1300 auto. 3:89 1300 manual stock. 3:77 is 1600 manual. 3.54 is stock for 2.0L van or sedan. Did the diff have an ID plate on one of the nuts? If not count the crown wheel teeth and the pinion teeth, that will give you the ratio as Neil said. 39 crown wheel teeth divided by the pinion teeth.. I am in Oz.. 2 types of rear ends here were English (Extract diff thru front of housing) or BW.. Borg Warner ( Rear inspection plate) extract thru the rear after removing the tailshaft flange) Only this week I had the 3.54 rebuilt but was running a 3:77 in the meantime. The 3:77 i noticed was a little quicker in response but the spedo was out about 5 - 10 kmph. After refitting the 3:54 the spedo became back to true.

De cambered springs, loose the blocks. Deffo an English axle. I would fit anti tramp bars, especially with more power.

That's an English Axle mate so nice and easy to get parts/spares for that don't cost the world. I'd definitely go Quaife LSD mate, I put one in my kit car with an English axle earlier in the year and never looked back. Best thing I've done to the car so far.

you have a standard english axle there [or a front loader as we used to call them] one of the diff nuts should have had a grotty square tag on it, with the ratio on failing that, tippex out + count the teeth on pinion + crownwheel, quick divide, - diff ratio tidying out my late dad's garage, i have found a RS2000 [3.54] diff in a filing cabinet...

@Kevin-BMWX3Ай бұрын
I would also make sure you replace the half shaft bearings before you reassemble the axle. Totally agree with the other comments regards fitting anti tramp bars and a LSD unit. (RS spec 3.54:1 ratio diff is best with the Pinto and Tyoe 9). Without them you will find that the axle moves about under hard acceleration making a thumping sound and you will get lots of unwanted wheel spin especially on wet roads. Do it once and do it right is my advice. Love the videos and keep up the good work.

Lose the roll bar and fit the tramp bars, single leaf springs decambered and lose the lowering blocks, they cause on end of axle location issues and make alxe tramp worse. The panhard rod will stop all the side ways movement as the springs will twist when cornering as they have also no sideways control. Decide now if you're keeping the druns or fixing discs as you need to weld a mount to the floor if fiting discs. I'd stick with the drums for what you're doing. Most had 8inch drums the rs has 9s which you can get new. 100% English axle best one for a road car lots of upgrades out there for it.

Defo have a english axle. Likely to be a 3.89 diff. With you using a Pinto a 3.54 diff may suit your application which is what Ford used for the RS2000. Only difference is that you have the 5 speed box. Keep up the good work.

Hi Mitch, looks like your making a really good job of the MK2 some on has obviously been at it before you given the bushes that are in the springs and roll bar, you have got an English axle but given you have put a grunty Pinto in it, you have got 2 options look for a baby atlas or fit bigger shafts but that will also mean putting in the big sun gears, and you will need an LSD, you will snap a shaft with out thinking about it in an English axle unless you drive it like an old woman and you will not be doing that I know that, there is more to this than you think look into it mate,
@sidsxr3irestorationАй бұрын
Great video Mitch. Think the Diff you got is a 3,9 or 3.89 you tell by the lines on the crown wheel. Think you will need a 4.1 diff out of a van axle bud.

Changed so many mk2 axels over the years. Yours is a standard English axel. There’s really only 2 or 3 Axels. English, Atlas on the rally cars and import SA cars had BW (Borg Warner) Someone has already said how to work out the ratio.
