This is the upgrade I thought I'd never do to my Mk7 GTI because it increases maintenance needs and removes some of the low-end torque that I really enjoy... and it's expensive. Well, with 128,730 miles on the odometer, I got bored and decided to make a leap to greater power with an upgrade to an IS38 turbo! See a full write-up at wp.me/p7YnQB-2dX. I've also run a fuel economy analysis. WHO DOES THAT? See details at • IS38 Mk7 GTI Fuel Econ... .

I have IS38 EQT tune from a Stage 2 IS20 tune. I live in NY, and I honestly miss the stage 2 it felt more responsive and powerful because in NYC it's alot of stop and go, in and out of traffic where the low end power was very useful and way more fun. Once I got my IS38 it was slower at the low end for sure, I have to hit it above 3500rpm to start feeling power. And I can be in and out of traffic like I use to, not crazy like the kids. But if I'm going 60mph and I need to pass someone I can press the gas and it will pull immediately. Now with IS38 at 60mph I press the gas and it's slow, it actually more gradual. Once it gets to the 4k then it's responsive. For me to feel like the IS20 responsiveness at 3k I need to have the IS38 at 4k. If that makes sense. Now for the IS38 positive, it pulls like a freight train after 4k definitely stronger pull then IS20. I get less wheel spin maybe cause of custom EQT tune and being DSG I'm on stock VW tires also 7k miles on them so pretty new. For me to have fun on IS38 I go out at night when no one is around and i hit it to feel that power. I had to do my Logs and send them to EQT and the words "Holy Fuck!!" Came out of my mouth when I did a 3rd gear pull on the IS38. Once it pulls it doesn't let go unlike the IS20 I feel it pulling at 3k and 4500 it would start to relax but IS38 had me back of my seat the whole time. But if you look at videos online people with custom IS20 and E85 file are pulling faster and harder then IS38 so it's on the tune. I don't have E by me so I want more power with regular pump gas and I wanted a more gradual feel then torque low end. Another thing the BAD about EQT is, it's very difficult for them to get to you if you run into issues everything takes a week or more for them to respond. I've had issues and it wasn't fun waiting 9 days to finally get a response. Also you need to constantly send them logs until they are done tuning your car which means you need to find a place to drive your car in 3rd gear from 2500rpm to 7000rpm. In NY it's hard to find an area to do that. I have to do my Logs at midnight or 1am when no cars on the road on a weekend to avoid weekend cops and drunk drivers. So if you plan a custom tune have an area where you can drive and my car goes to 120mph in a Pull and we are still tuning for more. It's caring to be at that HP and you still have to keep pushing until you reach 7k to Log it. Anyway that's my long response, with what I know now, I probably would of gone IS20 with a Custome Tune, more fun on the low end so I would enjoy the power daily driving and custom tunes let's you hold power longer like IS38. I love the IS38 power but don't like that I need to really hit it to feel the power, can't feel it daily driving. What I do is downshift and drive my car on 3rd gear with the RPM around 4k on the highway to more responsive as I drive thru NY traffic.

@@ashGR3.0 no it's TPC38. When I was looking to do my upgrade EQT had a 90 week waiting list. Yes 90 WEEKS! Cause of Covid everything was shut down or delayed but they are back with 3 to 4 week wait time for Turbo which is average. And supposedly the new Turbos now have been modified to Spool Sooner or I think the new IS38 can spool sooner so maybe it won't be as slow on the low end. I say contact them and ask first.

Thanks for the honest and practical review of upgrading to the IS38 turbo. My stock 2016 MK7 with 71,000 may be showing signs of needing eventual replacement. Its early still, but starting to get the turbo wastegate rattle. Not sure if its exactly the same as the MK6 or MK5. The clips made to remedy the rattle on the arm do not fit on the MK7. VW may have listened to complaints and redesigned a sturdier point where the arm meets the pivot. Instead of a flat arm attached to another flat piece by using a "bolt", it now sandwiches the flat piece on both sides, then a bolt going through all 3 pieces of metal. This doesnt prevent the actual wastegate from vibrating, which is what I might be experiencing. When the time comes to replace, I'll probably opt of the IS20 replacement since most driving is done in Manhattan as my daily with the kids. More power means mo money, mo tickets, mo points, and mo insurance premiums. Just because it can be done, doesnt mean it should be done.

I think they're for ships. They're about the same size as what I recall from a ship on which I had served and I'm not far from plenty of ports. I also think a locomotive may use a turbo about this size. Given the large number of ship ports here, there's plenty of train activity, too.

I just went IS38 with a GIAC stage 3, 93 octane tune. Been every single stage in this car, white 2017 MK7 non-PP 6 speed manual. Only 40K miles. This is my second MK7 GTI. I went with a stage 2 Southbend Endurance clutch rated at 465 ft-lbs torque to hold the power. Would have gone stage 3 if I could do it over but it seems to be holding the power just fine for now. I absolutely love this upgrade. I didn't think I would like the loss of the low-end, punchy torque but the power when you push the gas down a little harder is totally worth it. It's only the difference of a few hundred RPMs shifted to the right of the range before the powerband kicks in but, I would get tremendous wheel spin, punching it on the IS20 in 1st through 3rd so, no real "loss" there. Now, I do still get wheel spin, maybe more if I really slam it down but, not right on that initial take off like before. It's overall faster but your review is spot on and worded very well. I couldn't agree with you more and I appreciate you taking the time to make this vid.

TO ANSWER YOUR "TQ" QUESTION: It all depends on the Turbo and how much the torque dips after meeting with HP. If (hypothetically) the IS38 (by design) could hold torque just a tad longer (on that particular tune), then you would have >TQ / But, also higher WHP. Albeit, if you had an IS38+ version and ran E85 - you would probably see the numbers that would make more sense. Hope that explains it in laymens terms.

A very mature and intelligent look at doing the IS38 upgrade. I am a plumber and totally understand labor, material expense, and maintenance. Starting bone stock, I believe if the turbo fails, or any part for that matter, there will most likely be an aftermarket part to fix it, that is most likely better than Volkswagen OEM, have good availability, and a knowledgeable community. The position of foot on pedal is very important to me. Can the mode button just have 4 different custom maps?

Thanks for posting. While many aftermarket options can be an improvement, many also cut corners to keep costs down. As a result, I like the OEM option. Regarding custom maps, I think some companies may offer switchable maps, but I don't know if any of them work with the Mode button. Thanks for visiting.

I felt a similar "meh" feeling about my unitronic ECU flash upgrade. Yeah I feel a lot more torque when I floor it on an onramp and yeah the number gains were a good "deal" for the price vs hp/torque I gained but really at the end of the day the only time I get to use this performance boost is for on ramps. The DSG reprogramming from them was well worth it though as they have much better shift points programmed in and if I had to pick only one or the other, I would pick the TCU reflash. The ECU reflash I could have done with out but I just tell myself it was a good "deal" as it was on paper. The money spent on new speakers, helix subwoofer and noico sound deadening were better use of time/money in that I use them in 100% of my time driving vs only on rare occasions.

5:05 That's a clear nope from side. This really isn't about me trying to take the piss on you, it's about me exactly being there in the past and knowing how you feel like. On my MK5 GTI my stock Turbo went so decided to upgrade to an K04. The K04 sure as hell is a whole different story when being on full chat but man, to this day (more than 1 year in) i didn't get used to the loss of low end torque. You have to bare in mind though that on the platform i'm speaking about the low end torque loss is way more dramatic than on yours. With the K04 more or less nothing happens till 2500ish RPM whereas with the K03 the thing spools right from 2000rpm. It's just so satisfying when you are cruising behind a car or two in 6th gear with 2000 rpm and when the road opens up you can just pass them effortlessly (that being an example for a daily type scenario). Or when being on some twisty roads you can just use the low end torque, without always feeling the need to rev the hell out of the car, and you're already fast. Of course not as fast as with the bigger turbo being on full chat but i found myself more often than not not wanting to go full send so i probably prefer the low end torque for going already fairly fast without what it feels like any effort compared to the big turbo where you always feel like needing to switch down a gear. I'm currently on the fence of keeping the car but if i do so, i heavily consider upgrading (or rather downgrading!?) to an K03 hybrid which gives me ever so slightly less power than the k04 but way earlier spool and that low end torque usable low effort type of fun back i'm missing to this day. Point is : considering what you've said in the video, i think you made the wrong purchase and keep telling yourself the opposite and try to justify it with scenarios that are pretty untypical when it comes to your driving style. Considering your usual usecase of the car you'd have way more fun with the low end torque instead of all the power that's higher up in the rev range since you're using that way less anyway. I think you would've been much better off with an IS20 hybrid (LM440 IS20) for example. Again, this really wasn't me taking the piss on you but just sharing my thoughts. The loss of low end torque that comes with swapping to an bigger turbo is an really interesting topic and you did a good job of elaborating/informing on that because this is heavily overlooked by a lot of people i think. Most are just chasing the high numbers but when they got them they might realize that the low numbers might be just as important, if not more.
@StealthGTI
@StealthGTI 3 жыл бұрын
I appreciate your perspective. I will say, though, that there's a much greater loss of torque between the K03 and K04 than with the IS20 and IS38. I do miss being able to just stab the accelerator without a downshift. I've said in more than one video that I'm a "lazy driver" who'd get more out of the car by simply downshifting. HAHA! Of course, driving a DSG would resolve the disadvantages of my lazy driving habits. Regardless, I do enjoy what the car can do now. I just have to drive it differently to exploit that. @@StealthGTI Yeah no doubt that the difference between K03/K04 is way worse than IS20/IS38 when it comes to low down torque loss. Still though, kind of the same to an decent extend. I know where you're coming from and i'd still say you probably put on a turbo that isn't quite suited to your driving profile. I'll try the 235s next summer. As for the stronger internals on the R, VW tends to over-engineer their drivetrains for improved reliability. It is said that the GTI is good for 400 hp before internal work or additional fueling is needed. I've read similar reports that the R is good for 500. Of course, that may all be wrong. It just seems to be the popular opinions. Regardless, my driving style is mostly sedate, with only occasional romps into the power. If you need a new turbo ANYWAY (my '15 GTI Autobahn which I purchased not 7 months ago as a one-owner 53K mile car apparently does, at 54K) and are looking at similar expense anyway it's very hard to resist. The car is currently running a Unitronic Stage 2 tune w catted DP (previous owner installed at approx 40K) which I have to assume contributed to this absurdly early turbo failure, or not, as it seems getting a lousy factory turbo can just happen to unlucky Mk7 owners now and then. Unitronic has an IS38 upgrade Stage 2+ tune and as the car came with their accessport connector and switching it to my name is a one-time $150 cost for all their tunes, so that'd be the cost-effective way to deal with tuning. Don't wrench myself but know a local VW/Audi tech who will do the install for me, whatever turbo I go with, as a side gig, so will be much less than the $4500 my local rip-off German Specialty shop quoted me (to replace and install another OEM IS20.) The car's used as a light daily (work at home) which means grinding, horrific Atlanta traffic and streets and freeways, but weekends to be let loose in the mountains and eventually, track. It's a manual 6 as well, making the city grind that much more not fun, and the loss of low end does concern me. Maybe a hybrid creation? Bit more $ upfront but seems like a lot of the upsides of both. Oh, and emissions were a real drag initially w the Stage 2 and DP (even catted) took a lot of $$ noodling by said Specialty shop to get it to pass, wonder if bigger turbo adds to that headache as well. TY for your info-packed and candid vid, it's very helpful, and I've got a big decision to make! Cheers!

I have read a few stories of people having "crank walk" issues with the manuals transmissions when they upgrade power. I know its not super common, but common enough that it should be taken into consideration as well. It doesn't affect cars with the DSG option, just the manual. Very strange. For myself? I came from a 400 AWHP Lancer Evo 9 to a GTI. I like to AutoX, and drive mainly in town, and occasionally on trips on the highway. Where I live (California) the state is VERY strict on modifications on cars. Each time you get your smog test for your reg (every 2 yrs here) they are now scanning your OBDII to check for "tunes". If you car has a non CARB approved tune? You get a fine plus you have to come back to prove your car had the tune removed. They also have banned oil catch cans, and your exhaust can't be too loud. Importunely this is the trend happening across the USA. Stricter emissions, and what not leading to modifying your car to be very difficult. So with that all being said? I am keeping my GTI stock. Just not worth the headache with the officials.
@StealthGTI
@StealthGTI 2 жыл бұрын
It seems to me that overly stiff clutches contribute to crank walk more than the added power. And, while DSGs are far less prone to crank walk, they do get it, too. However, I think the clamping forces are applied to the thrust bearing differently with DSG cars. Regardless, when looking at shear numbers, crank walk appears to be a rare thing. Yes, we may see hundreds of threads about it online, but there are hundreds of thousands of GTIs out there that haven't had crank walk. That's reassuring. Regarding strict emissions states, yes, California is among the worst of them. There are five other CARB-compliant states that I'm aware of, mostly in the northeast. I'm glad I don't have to deal with it. I was stationed in CA twice, left my cars registered elsewhere, and wouldn't choose to settle there. My money goes much further in the places I would choose. :-) Thanks for visiting.

My year GTI VW only sold like 6800 in one year. So the numbers are much lower than quoted. I have seen the crank walk happen at autox events, most people that bump up power are almost required in a manual car to upgrade they're clutch. Sadly I've seen it happen not than I would like. You are correct is still a small number but still significant to consider if considering adding power to your manual car. Thank You for your time.

Do you have a limited slip diff?
@StealthGTI
@StealthGTI 3 жыл бұрын
It has the "Performance Package" VAQ e-diff, which is basically a Haldex differential turned sideways. I also disabled the "cross-differential system" (XDS... ABS-based), which allows the VAQ to act on its own. When I have wheelspin, it's BOTH of them. :-)

@StealthGTI
@StealthGTI 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, I do! This car came with what was then-known as the "Performance Package," which includes the VAQ e-differential. In my opinion, it interferes with the existing XDS, which is essentially ABS-controlled traction control. So, I disabled the XDS and let the VAQ do all the work. It seems to work well. I'm not sure of the context of your comment. If it's regarding my "foolish" purchase, the "foolishness" came from me blowing money on a turbo that I didn't need. ;-) If a turbo needs replacing, then the IS38 is a good option. I'd also consider APR's new DTR6054, which claims to make 436 hp and 401 lb-ft on 91 AKI and with a factory exhaust. It's more laggy than an IS38; so, I think it's better suited for a DSG than my lazy-driven manual. ;-) Thanks for visiting!

Just question if i install aftermarket down pipe do we lose or void vw warranty?
@StealthGTI
@StealthGTI 2 жыл бұрын
Legally, they have to prove that a given mod caused a given problem before denying a warranty claim. Realistically, if you take your car to a dealership for a powerplant problem and they know that you're tuned, they may flag your car for warranty denial and then risk the court battle later. So, even if you're right, who do you think has deeper pockets for fighting a claim in court? In my opinion, it's all about managing risk. They have to look for a tune; but a downpipe is staring right at them and is a dead giveaway. I'll skip the downpipe on future cars. Good Luck!

Did you consider a IS20 hybrid?
@StealthGTI
@StealthGTI 3 жыл бұрын
Only very briefly. I've reached a point to where I don't like to tinker. In my opinion, any tuner that requires logs to write a tune is "tinkering" and the outcome is subject to glitches, even if only sporadically. Too much tinkering often leads to check engine lights and/or driveability problems. I've been there and done that. I'm no longer part for the Check Engine Light Brigade. ;-) I like the car to run flawlessly at all times with no faults. If I need a conservative tune to do that, then I'm content to have just a little less. APR fit that bill very nicely. Plus, I have an APR dealer nearby. Thanks for visiting.

I don’t understand why people do this over buying a golf r
@StealthGTI
@StealthGTI 2 жыл бұрын
That's easy: At the time of my purchase, brand new GTIs were selling for $6000+ under MSRP and Golf Rs were being marked-up to over MSRP. I paid around $24,500 for my GTI and Golf Rs were going for $42k and higher. Even with my selection of power mods, I'm still $10,000+ ahead of the Golf R, plus ongoing fuel savings. With that said, I'd LOVE to have a Golf R! However, I cannot justify the expense to replace what satisfies my wants/needs 95% of the time. Thanks for visiting!

@@deanmarr785 - Thanks for the note. I'm pretty sure the FWD version of APR's tune limits torque in first gear. Perhaps it affects 2nd a bit, too. I also know that I can request the AWD version (for GTI), which removes the torque restriction in first gear. I'll look into it.
