Thought about this and did the same this morning. Assuming you go for basic car but add dynamic chassis control with 19" wheels and nice paint 40k plus 😔 As I said in your post yesterday, most enthusiasts of the GTi mark is going to want at least one or two of the options. IMO if you're going to get hit by the luxury car tax because you want the GTi you want, you might as well go large and load the car up then hopefully squeeze your dealer for discounts. Always remember the discounted price is not the tax bracket, the car is always set at manufacturers price not dealer to customers price.

Thank you for sharing your points. I agree with the fact if you are going to go above the £40k mark you may as well go a few £1,000's over to get exactly what you want. I am a fan of a completely base car actually at £38,900 and perhaps a discount could be had particularly with the other options currently available from competitor manufacturers to consumers. It is a very tough market although Volkswagen and GTI have the heritage and longevity on its side on that front 👍

Shame seeing the mk8 ending the golf gti 3dr hot hatch. Then the iconic tornado red is gone. Such a shame.

Even buying new through a broker OTR prices across the market are getting extreme. My days of buying new rather than a 6-12 month old used are gone.

I think the used market is in a great place to pick up a fantastic car without the bigger hit from depreciation. Unless of course there are some exceptional deals on new cars such as this GTI 🤞

I think the Golf is getting too expensive, I built one there now and it came in at £45K........ for a GTI!!!!!

Sam I thought the higher tax rate was for cars £40,000.00 plus at manufacturer and the base golf gti is under 40 k so the higher tax rate comes in if you put options on it. I built one it came in at 47 k better to go for the golf R.

Yes I believe that is correct. Once you put more than one option on you are pretty much then at the limit from being the right side of 40k.

Mental the price of a golf, let alone the GTI these days! I got my Mk7.5 GTI specced in White Silver metallic, Dynaudio and the Brescia Wheels, total cost was £30,050. It has so much as standard compared to newer cars or cars of the same age, such as heated seats, side curtain airbags etc. I'm looking to get a 2018/2019 AMG C43 as my next car, but it's ridiculous how little comes as standard, like ACC is a premium added option...

Your MK7.5 GTI sounds unbelievable in that spec. I've always had a soft spot for white silver metallic. Will you be selling that car in exchange for a C43?

When you consider the costs of a high spec'd GTi some might say "why, if I'm willing to pay that much I'll go to the Golf R" 🤔

I'd never spec a pan roof. It's extra weight in the wrong place, robs interior headroom and if like the Mk7 is prone to leaks and cracking. I also found the HK audio to be disappointing compared to the Dynaudio in the Mk7.

Can you get the basic free colour with Estorills under 40k? It lists it at 40,250 but think that includes VED and OTR at £600

Good question. The Estoril's at £1350 would take it over the £40,000 list price even with a free colour.

Whilst this is still a bit poverty spec, it really is worth keeping the list price sub-£40K for your own self esteem, if nothing else. Stealth taxes have always been there but a £40K car and a £50K salary should not be taxed at super-rich rates. It will only get worse as this country struggles with social welfare funding…….

In the UK its always worth using carwow to see what dealers offer, I did that and saved £4000 on a new Golf compared to what VW showed the same car and spec on their build a car tool, sorry for sounding like an advert.

That is a great point but as I said in my above post the price you pay with a dealer because of discounts etc is not the figure road tax is set at. You configure a new GTi and it comes out at say 42k but given discounts it comes to you at 39k the tax rate is still set at its top figure. I did this on my m135i xdrive with discounts got it for 39k but its actually figure was 43k so higher rate applied

It’s a shame. If they could have kept it under £40k with colour and DCC, the rest you could live with. Having to choose between colour and DCC is far from ideal.
