[MK8] Softdrifting Tutorial

"What is softdrifting?"
"How do you softdrift?"
"So it's like 45 degrees or something like that?"

All these questions are answered in this video!
When the community first discovered softdrifting, I learned it on my own with no tutorials, just with the guideline of "45 degrees." I also never bothered to search for one since I knew there wouldn't be any results. With that in mind, I decided to step up to the plate and make a tutorial myself!
I demonstrated this technique with Mario Kart Stadium as the prime example. Many people ask how to cover the first turn, which then makes them ask how to softdrift. This video should solve that problem, I hope.
Other examples are later included, and a tutorial with hands is shown as well. Apologies if that part isn't clear enough to see, but you should get the main idea.
The most basic thing to associate softdrifting with, to me, is where the control stick faces. I would have it in a range of 30-70 degrees left or right (45 to simplify), and that should produce a faster mini turbo. Get that part down and you'll easily get the hang of it.

it doesnt work for me, I'm using the classic controller and everything :) I can't really tell the angles on your conttroller because you have it pointing up towards the camera rather than a birds-eye view. I really wanna get this strat down, I've spent hours upon hours trying to get and it just isnt working

I think this is outdated, patch changes. You can’t get a soft drift that shallow while charging turbos that fast. There’s a timer upper right, if you soft drift a super turbo that quick with this loadout you’ll end up cutting too hard and landing in the grass. The info is fine, it’s just if you try to replicate what you’re seeing him do it’s not gonna happen. You can’t get a super mini turbo off turning your character only 90 degrees with Mario + pipe frame + standard wheels, you’ll end up adding an extra 45 degrees or so to the turn.

So pretty much, to soft drift, you move the analog stick towards the top left / right (depending on turn) instead of simply just left or right? Then it should work?

So if you tilt the joystick upward a bit, you'll get the turbo boost faster? Cuz' what I do is toggle the joystick left and right as quick as I can.

Sorry, are you saying the joystick should be pressed 100% into the upper and right position? Or are you saying the joystick should be only slightly pressed to the right to do it? Do you go 100% right then lessen it to halfway after?

Can you make an updated version specific to _Mario Kart 8 Deluxe?_ Many people don't know how to perform it in that game due to the altered angle (which is apparently 75 degrees).

I think I get it but some more in depth explanation of where to use it would be a touch better. Is it mostly for bendier turns as opposed to sharper turns you should do this? I'll give it a go later.

The video gave examples, but yeah, most turns that aren't very sharp are where you'd like to softdrift; it all depends on the track. Watching WRs helps a lot I'm 6'1" I can't help that no shorts fit me properly lmao

Okay so I cant get this down for the life of me. I've been trying to just get the first turn on mario kart stadium for literally hours and Ive even downloaded the world record ghost but no luck. Do you have to use the pro controller because I use the game pad so I was wondering if that was my problem.

Definently can use a game pad as the world record for mario kart stadium uses gamepad in fact he has 9 wr right now with game pad, i recommend continuing to practice and try different tilt angles, eventually it will become muscle memory

I taught myself how to softdrift. It's actually very easy with the ccp (Classic controller pro) I want a pro controller so bad tho lol
