Hey Jeff, thanks for the reccomendation. Unfortunately my studio isn't big enough to invite people to watch/listen live. When I rehearse with a guitar trio in the studio there is barely any room left to move. 😅 So for that kind of performance I'd need a different location. But again it would be a cool idea for sure.

There's a lot to process during that fill, but I think what gets me is the triplet on the side of the cowbell along with the timbral similarity of the muted cymbal and hi-hat. It almost sounds like a DJ scratching or EDM glitch music - only performed live by a drummer. Awesome!

May I ask for some of your advice on crafting a solo for this song? Or basically, on crafting a fusion (or whatever style it is) solo as it’s something I have zero experience in. Also... do you count in the solo to know where you’re up to or just remember when the instruments come back in (since it’s like 16-32 bars of just cowbell in the backing track). Thank you!

Hi Joel, thanks for the question. Soloing is a BIG topic. So I can't answer that one without doing video examples. But what I already can tell you is that I always hear that 7/8 clave in my head when I play solos in this time signature. One aproach would be to begin with long notes (leaving space) and gradually build up the density of the phrases. Of course you will need the vocabulary, technique and dynamics to tell a good story (it is like a dialogue/speech). So practicing rudiments in different dynamics all over the kit is a good start. I hope that helps a bit. Cheers!

Hi Franco, yes, Audix D2 on Racktoms & D4 on Floortoms. i5 on Main Snare. On the Bassdrum I use a Shure Beta 52 and on my Side Snare I use a SM57. And for Overheads - Neumann KM184 Stereo Pair. Rode NT55 for Hihat and Ride. Cheers, Matthias

Hi JoelD77, this song is part of Daves "Contemporary Drummer + One" Play-Along package. There you can find a Lead Sheet and explanations of the different parts. But I learned that song way before I had the Play-Along bacause it is the last track on his "Master Plan" CD. I listened to that track very often, played along to it and learned the song quite quickly by ear.

Thanks for your question. No, it is one complete Take, only switched between the camera perspectives. I always play whole takes, because I think it is less work to do when playing one good take than editing/cutting all the parts. :-) So all the Videos you see on my Channel are "one takes".

Actually yes. Because I am a BIG Weckl Fan I listened to the Albums over an over. I even can sing along to most of the instrumental solos (Piano/Sax/Guitar etc.) played on the Albums ;-) But of course I learned to play all the different styles in drum lessons.

Yup it is, I learned it from Dave personally. It has to do with ergonomics behind the kit. So With the "traditional grip" it works perfectly and I can move around the drums very easy without wasting energy.
